Rllmuk Arcade Stick Thread

Recommended Posts

A lot of exciting stick discussion has happened in the SFIV thread but both the game and the sticks are nearly out and mixing them together might annoy some people and make the thread slightly messy. There was also a thread or two in retro with people discussing making their own sticks which I thought was pretty interesting. Neo Gaf has its own dedicated thread and I think it works very well

So yeah I guess I'll post a few handy links

First is a easy to understand guide I wrote about the arcade stick/pad options around, with SFIV in mind but it can apply to other things- HERE

Also we have the very long but full of good information thread on Neo Gaf HERE

We of course have the SRK forums HERE

We have Markman/Mark Julio's own site and stick database HERE

And for those who want detailed info on how to make a stick and detail about what makes them tick, go HERE

I kind of asked this in the other thread but it's more applicable here.

For the average - fancies SF4 but doesn't want to spend loads on a stick - person, is the game perfectly ok with a pad? Do you use the thumbstick to play or the d-pad? Are them special d-pad controllers (below) a big improvement or a cash-in?

I've heard good things about the pad. First of all you have all the buttons laid out correctly and SFIV make you use some button combinations which are otherwise awkward on the normal controllers.

Also the d pad is meant to have good travel and be nice and large. The stick on the 360 is too imprecise to make exact motions from what I've played. It seems like a good option for those not wanting a stick but wanting an upgrade over the 360 pad.

I play the PS3 version of SF4 and the d-pad's definitely good enough. Although, stupid/funny as it might seem, I sometimes switch to the left analogue stick for charge moves.

I'd actually like to know this as well. I have this at home, and it's pretty shit. Are those Madcatz ones better?

The pad you linked too, those were awful.

These have been reviewed pretty well, you can google around to see.

Also since you have a PS3 and the game on there, you do know you can get USB saturn pads that work natively I think if you would prefer that?

Avoid the standard 360 joypad at all costs, but if you absolutely must play with a pad, then those Fightpads are the perfect solution.

See, this is it. Just how serious are you here?

Because it's the difference between a £30 game and a £65-£180 one.

Really serious. If you're playing on a PS3 then it's up to you, but if you're playing on the 360 then I would seriously advice you to either invest in one of the cheaper arcade sticks or at least a fightpad.

He is serious. When I bought VF5 I didn't really intend to buy a stick at all. The rubbishness of the controller swayed me eventually and it's a completely different game. The 360's d-pad is notoriously bad, and the analogue stick is too slow and inprecise to pull off the good moves. And the buttonlayout isn't optimal either. Now a skilled player can still fight a good match and a novice player can still have fun with a pad, but a stick really is much, much, much better.

It's rubbish that they couldn't make it work acceptably with the 360 controller. I realise Microsoft are more to blame here, but still.

I imagine most reviews don't even mention it. For me, £65 is just too much. *Cue comment about SNES version costing £70*

Apparently quite a few people in the US have been issues with the SE mad catz stick, with the stick getting stuck in certain positions and damaging the stick PCB. Dunno how widespread the problem is but if you were intending to mod it anyway it seems to not be a problem then. AND it can look like this

Even in pink thats pretty cool

There's not much Capcom can do about it. Also, I frankly think that 95% of the players won't care and play it using the analogue stick, while the 5% who do care probably already own an alternative controller.

Obviously you could just buy the game, see if you get on with it and always invest in a controller later.

I also noticed that the D-pad of the 360 Elite is a great improvement over the launch controllers so it seems MS have done a revision on the D-pad at least once since launch.

It's not Capcom's fault, the dpad on the 360 is simply rubbish and no amount of smart programming is going to fix that. Blame Microsoft, although the joypad is perfect for shooters and racers. The only solution is buying a different joypad with a decent dpad or a cheap arcade stick.

You won't be able to play at the best possible level at it without some frustration, but I think it will be perfectly playable with a normal pad- your execution for certain combos and attacks will be limited in comparison to another option though. Loads of people play HD Remix and stuff with the normal pad and seem to enjoy it fine though

I enjoyed my time with the Hori EX2- wish I kept it as a spare second stick for multiplayer now. Right now I'm refreshing shopto every 10 mins to see if my damn TE stick has been posted

Any idea what time shopto stop processing orders? I'm not expecting it to despatch today, but just 'authorising' or something would put my mind at rest. The game has been despatched, just waiting on the TE stick now!!

Bastards.

I preordered SFIV earlier today on a whim.

I've just bought the arcade stick from Play on a similar whim; despite knowing that I'll be shit at SFIV and get bored after a couple of hours.

(I'm not quite mad enough to blow £160 on the tournament stick).

Yeah, I know, I'm just torn between a Saturn one and that Madcatz one. Wish I could try before I buy.

There are going to be a few tournaments around the UK in the coming weeks, maybe there may be one where you are?(The Netherlands?) I'm sure they'd be a few of the new pads there to have a quick play with?

No idea. I'm guessing even if they pack stuff up now, they're not going to update the site until morning or something

I only just got the emails saying they were processing my TE stick and SE game.

There's a post in the forum saying they missed the post for SF stuff they processed today so none of it is actually shipping til tomorrow.

I cancelled my TE stick pre-order today.

I've got nothing against people paying premium prices for premium items. I'm just going cold on SF IV as I don't think I'll get as much fun from it as I'd like to. I'll still buy the game on Friday and see how I get on with it. If that goes well I'll just buy the standard stick and mod the arse out of it.

The pads were on Amazon for £25 originally, and although they aren't available at the moment it may be worth signing up to be notified when the come back in stock. Especially as it looks like Play had a bigger allocation than they thought they would.

If you can get the game for £28 and the pad for £25, then that's £53 which is a bit more bearable.
