dear catastrophe rufus

awesome!

i started thinking about it because there's an occasional belle and seb club night here in manchester called kissing just for practice, and their latest poster was based on the artwork for if you're feeling sinister. thought the red and black would match the stick without having to worry about changing/removing the red trim. i cold totally work "dear catastrophe rufus" into that somewhere though. however i've also been having a bunch of other ideas (without yet actually trying to put any of them together on a template) so we'll see.

Finally got a cheap MadCatz 360 controller this weekend, so I could mod my second DC stick and be ready for Street Fighter this time. Pretty simple to do, took a while though due to the soldering iron playing up and not always seeming to get hot enough. Only problem was the glue gun, which is an evil thing to use and I found out the glue does get stupidly hot. I was quite content with it for the moment, had to bodge together a back button after I thought I was done, but I was going to use it as is, then look to making my own stick with Sanwa buttons and stick in the future.

Then yesterday evening I thought get and cut a bit of plexi glass and I can add my own picture, it's not much work really. Well if I'm cutting that, I may as well get the buttons, the mod doesn't look as hard to do as I first read. So I found myself late last night working on the third version of the picture I want, with my Sanwa stick and buttons ordered and trying to remember where the tins of spray paint are. ;)

I'm really quite excited about this now, hopefully I can at least get the buttons and stick in before SSFIV arrives.

Nice to see. Silly ShopTo pictures!

Anyway, it's all irrelevant now. I just spunked up for a Round 1 TE at £99, free delivery. :D Not quite in the same league as those £55-70 pricepoints that have been flashing in and out of existence, but oh well.

Link.

^Posted that less than 48 hours ago. And..

My £99 TE just landed (thumped) onto my desk at work!

And fuck me, she's gorgeous.

Gonna wait 'til next month now and then work on modding in some custom art under clear plexi. :( Currently looking at a few Escher prints that might compliment the black/white thing.

But yeah, for future reference, that Game Gears website. Free delivery, nice and fast, really easy payment with minimum of fuss. They done good.

i just arranged for collection of one of my replacement sticks. i'm trying to work up the will to fill out the form for the second one, but after that ten win SF4 streak we shared the other night and some ridiculous blazblue yesterday i'm not sure i can do it. so i guess i might be looking at a £100 bill for not returning one of them, plus however much it costs to get fancy artwork to put on it.

I had one of the new Tournament Edition 'S' sticks on pre-order at ShopTo, but today's Eurogamer review of SSF4 was the second article I've seen mention that the new sharper corners irritate the wrists after a while, so I cancelled my pre-order in favour of the 'Round 2' stick. I'm not going to regret that am I?

I only went for the 'S' model because I liked the PS3 model's button colours and art better, and I can always change that! I played vanilla SF4 on a MadCatz SE stick, so I intend to practice my modding on that first.

Nah you won't. The original sticks are a lot nicer imo- the round 2 being the prettiest of them.

Here are the results of the Dreamcast stick mod I've been working on.

All Sanwa parts, Cthulhu board for USB out to PC/PS3.

Cut the holes for the new Start and Select buttons on the side, modified the internals and button holes to take the Sanwa parts. Sanded the case, filled the start and VMU holes, filled, primed, and sprayed with gloss black.

Sanded the metal plate smooth, printed and laminated the graphics, glued graphics to the plate and carefully trimmed out the holes. Graphic is Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes.

New internal wiring loom for buttons and stick to connect to Cthulhu. USB socket on the front to connect via 5m B to A USB cable from sofa to PS3.

I'm bringing this one back from the dead because I should be getting a dual modded (360/PS3) Agetec quite soon. I'm interested in doing something similar to what you've done, but will likely theme the art work on one of Tager from Blazblue or whoever I end up using in Super (probably Guy). Any tips you can provide for fitting the art work (any niggles you had, etc) or spraying the case would be appreciated. And nice job!

I'm just finishing the mod for mine, all I need now is to pick up the crimps and solder those tomorrow and should be ready in time for SSFIV. No problems painting the case, but if you where to have just a painted top plate make sure you sand the Dreamcast logo and letters right off, Dremmel would be perfect. Even after quite a few coats of paint (a flat white) I could still faintly see the outline of them. Can't say anything about the artwork as I've cut out a plexi glass top panel and just have a printed picture to put underneath it.

I spent a little bit of time on my new Round 2 and it's made me realise how loose the JLF on my 14 month old TE has gotten- do they tend to need replacing every year or so if you want to keep the "spring" in them or is it worth doing that JLF ultimate mod?

How did that plexi turn out? And if it's good, do you fancy making another and selling it to me? I'm after the same set up and the only guy I can find that does it is in the US and charges $30 to ship over here.

Actually I might be crazy but I swear it feel a bit looser after I modded the stick- I unscrewed the bottom of the stick to take the ball top out a little and then screwed it back to secure my blue bubble ball top but not sure if I tightened it enough. That wouldn't make the travel of the stick itself feel more loose even if I did right?

I think it must just be spending time on the new stick and its in my head that I fucked up the mod and make it more loose by just changing the balltop

It's OK, a little rough around the edges though can tell it's a first attempt at this. I probably couldn't make something that would fit another stick sorry, as the button holes are cut around my attempt to widen the holes on the metal plate, they're not nice uniform circles. I did see someone in the UK on Shoryuken that makes them, does one for the Agtec about £11 I think, I'll have a look for the link.

That would be brilliant.

Found it, no pictures of it but he mentions a few times that he's measuring it up, he prints the art as well. Be interested to see it if you do go for it, I was thinking about one until I found this bit of plexi, the ones in the pictures do look good.
