Stick modding update:

So I posted about my new stick last month. I mentioned later that I swapped out the exotic Fanta for a nice (normal) short-throw Seimitsu LS-56, but I didn't go into details. Here it is:

I was a bit concerned about the LS-56 mounting properly in this stick because Seimitsu sticks are apparently supposed to be mounted higher than their Sanwa counterparts. To compensate for this, you can normally get raised mounting plates for their sticks so that they screw in place at the same depth as the Sanwas, but the stick is raised up higher. Anyway you can't get one of those plates for the LS-56 for some reason; it has it's own special (flat) plate which is much shorter than the norm.

As it turned out, despite the Omni having a whole load of mounting holes for different sticks, there was nothing that I could use to screw in the LS-56 plate, which made the question of it being too low a bit irrelevant

BUT the plate actually fit perfectly in the middle of all the mounting points. All I had to do was pad them out a bit to stop it rattling around and then I could just screw something on top of it to hold it in place. Here's how it looks:

I used industrial strength Velcro (just the soft side) to pad the screw points and just used inverted L-brackets with some standard nuts and bolts to hold it right against the top surface. It's rock solid too, so I'm happy with how that turned out.

This was weeks ago! But I wanted to update with my latest mod without skipping ahead.

So! I decided to swap out the buttons after all. The Crowns were just too damn inconsistent. I prefer Seimitsus over Sanwas, so I'm using those. The issue here is that the Japanese buttons are a little wider than the Korean ones I had and the plexi on the stick was cut for the smaller size. So it had to go. Now I thought a lot about this and I decided that I actually don't like the plexi on this stick anyway. It sits proud of the surface, so dust and grit gets under it really easily; the edges were actually quite rough as well and they (and the holding bolts) sit right where my hands rest, so in the name of comfort getting rid of the plexi is probably a step forwards.

This of course presents an opportunity too. If I take off the plexi, I'm probably going to want to change the art underneath. I'll need some kind of covering to hide the holes where the bolts went. My top tip for stick modding on the cheap is to just get a nice, understated laptop skin off eBay and cut it to size. They can be had really cheaply and are usually pretty durable. Obviously the chances of you finding one depicting Sagat flexing his buns are pretty slim, so if you absolutely must have a stick featuring Street Fighter characters looking buff, you're probably out of luck. Anyway I got a few that stuck with the black and white colour scheme that I seemed to have defaulted to and ended up going for a carbon fiber effect. This is the finished article:

(Sorry if the pictures aren't coming through, I'm getting started on Flickr today).

Has anyone had any success getting a 360 TE working under OSX Lion? All I can find are old threads on SRK and I can't get any of their ideas to work. I've tried this which generates an error message and installed this driver which has put an entry in System Preferences but it still doesn't recognise the stick.

It's a real pain but I finally managed it. Here's how in case anyone else ever looks because there's not much help out there:

1) Download and unzip this from my Dropbox - http://dl.dropbox.co...096/TEonMac.zip

2) Run Install360Controller-8as11.pkg first. It will put a new icon in your System Preferences but not much else.

3) Drag and drop ControllerListv8-16.plist over the Automator script. This is a big list of unique controller IDs that this kind fella at SRK has put together, it helps the driver see your stick. It should include all MadCatz variants and most other major stick types.

4) Restart your Mac, plug in your stick.

He gave those files for use with Snow Leopard and I'm using them with Lion so should work with any recent version of OSX.

Using a stick gets easier, right? I've just got one, and so far I'm significantly worse at SF4 with the stick than I ever was with a fightpad, and it feels really unnatural to use. Hoping it's a case of having traded a kazoo for a violin, but right now, I'm missing the kazoo.

Hi,

Guys i've been looking back through the thread to see if i can find a link to a template for the Hori Ex 2 stick artwork? We've just got a vinyl cutter at work and i'm itching to put some custom graphics on mine but i cant seem to find a template anywhere.

If anyone can help it's appreciated :)

Can someone do me a favour and link to the stick I need from gremlin to do a straight swap in my first-generation madcatz TE? I clearly suck at searching today, sorry :-(

My stick is really, really on its way out. It rattles a lot and it pretty stiff; when I move it beyond a certain point I feel like I have to grind it over a small bump, which makes a dull "clunk" sound. It's the standard stick that comes in the Mad Catz SE, and it's been used for about 2000 hours worth of Street Fightin' now, so I'd expect it to be on the way out really.

I'm scared to buy and install the new stick though, because it seems much more complex than the buttons. I was going to wait until a potential heggfest and ask some other nice man to do it for me.

It looks really easy on the TE, though maybe I'm being overly optimistic. I might have a little practice before I buy one.

Thank you for the confirmation, guys - I get nervous around serial numbers.

It is really easy, I've done it a couple of times now and I have zero skills with tools. The only slightly scary thing is having to remove the red glue that holds it in place but don't worry, it comes off pretty easy. The other problem is that after you replace it, you'll probably be fine, but without more glue, it'll slowly work itself lose over time, so you'll have to touch it up every now and then or get some of that weird glue yourself.

That red stuff is a cheap variant of this:

loctite_243threadlock.jpg

Costs about £3.50 and will ensure your screws stay tight for as long as you want.

Remember that with stuff like this, it's really quite difficult to get the screws back out once it's set.

I know nothing about modding arcade sticks but I know lots about sealing threads and other engineering guff. Are the screws in question bearing much load? Are the threads fine? Believe it or not, Coca-Cola is a pretty good thread lock in light applications.

The threads aren't under any real load, or at least shouldn't be. Not massively fine thread either. I'd always tend to be a little over the top with security but that's mainly because I really can't be arsed to ever open the stick again.

For "fire and forget" then you can't go wrong with Loctite. I've seen screw heads being sheared off when trying to take them back out later though!

I downloaded Mortal Kombat Arcade Triology on the 360 the other day, and cannot for the life of me get special moves to happen more than one in three attempts using a 360 pad. I've never been big on fighting games, but to be honest I feel like I've wasted money on this game as it's unplayable so I'm thinking about getting an arcade stick.

To save me reading 79 pages, can anyone tell me the cheapest way to do this? Ideally I'd like something that worked on both 360 and PS3 (I buy most boxed games on the PS3) but don't need it to be competition standard - I just want to be able to pull of special moves reliably in Mortal Kombat and maybe some other old arcade fighters. The Datel Arcade Stick Pro looks like it would do the job at the cost of about £30, but pretty much everyone says "don't buy that shit, spend £100 on this other stick instead". Are they really that bad? I'd rather not spend more than £40 on this. Any advice would be appreciated!
