Mass Effect 2: More waxing goddamn nostalgic.

You can literally play all of the core ME1 content in only a handful of hours.

I reckon 6-8 is how long it will take, even less if the difficulty is stuck on easy. It really is a rather vital precursor to Mass Effect 2.

Blimey, didn't realise it was that short. I'm coming up to 6 hours in and I only feel like I'm getting started.

I've hated RPGs for years. KOTOR, Fallout, Oblivion, all just tedious slogs. Loved FF7 back in the day but stats, XP, dialogue trees and turn-based combat just leave me in cold when there is so much fun to be had with shooting things in the face.

But after Elmo (and others) waxing lyrical about ME 1&2, I've given the RPG just one more chance. So fucking glad I did.

Haven't had that 'can't stop thinking about it all day at work' feeling with a game for as long as I can remember. ME is really striking the balance right for an action fan like me looking for something a bit meatier. I can see the flaws that people mention like a shit inventory and all that but I’ve got no point of reference so I’m coping just fine, it’s laborious but not a gamebreaker. Even the shitty autosave is not an issue and I’m playing on Easy. My biggest disappointment is probably not realising that Vanguard can’t use a sniper rifle :(

I’m ripping through for the backstory but feel like I’m short-changing it a little. I only get an hour or so a night to play and the anticipation for ME2 is killing me. Can’t wait to get to it if the improvements are as big as people say.

It's about that length if you just stick to the main plot thread and keep on pushing forward. The first time I played it, it took me 30 odd hours but I was taking my time and exploring the universe.

It's more the case that, if the player wants to they can experience the core game quite quickly. The main plot thread / main missions are fairly linear and quick to get through.

I don't think this is a spoiler but...the original ME side missions are of a considerable lower quality to the main game. There are lots of little side missions and planets to explore but its all kinda...shit.

This is what I hear. I guess this is where spoilers help as I would usually do all that side mission stuff like in RDR as an example but really, if the general consensus is 'don't bother' and with ME2 sitting there waiting to be played, I'm cool with skipping all the rubbish bits. I just want to fuck up Saren's shit and save the Galaxy and that.

Just got my first 2 hours in on this and it's pretty plain to see the care and attention that Bioware put into making this a much improved experience to ME. The game engine itself is the most important upgrade for me. ME was a fucking abortion of stuttering nonsense most of the time and I've no idea if this a refined version of that of a new one completely but it really feels good. Liked ME1 a lot more than I thought I would but this really feels like the real deal. Loving the assignable biotics buttons and the combat has been uber refined.

Not reading the thread for fear of spoilers but one thing I must know to make sure the next 35 hours is going to be worth it...

do I get to fuck kelly?

If you're a tardy Commander, yes.

The Arrival DLC was priced at 280MSP this morning on Live, but apparently someone jumped the gun as it's back to full price now. Regardless, ME2 content should be going on sale for Gold users sometime soon, perhaps next week; might be a good time to grab the interactive comic.

Teen girl band appeal. Is this what's happening to ME3 then - an X-Factorisation of the series? Making it all ungrimy, characterless and uninteresting, and going backwards in time to make a grizzled veteran regenerate and leap out of the FMV of a Final Fantasy game?

Not a troll; I've no idea, as I've stayed away from the ME3 thread since I saw what I'd consider a spoiler there a few months back. That's no Shepard, though. She's barely even a lamb.

New default face for FemShep. Thoughts? I quite like it , but I don't know how well it'll go down with you hardcore FemSheppers...

Nothing a bit of inept PhotoShopping won't fix. Other than her looking about 10 years too young.

Anyway, it's a shame the appearance packs aren't on sale. I may as well pick up Arrival on the 360, though.

That's what you get when you let your heart win ...

I Googled "Paramore lyrics". I don't actually know any off by heart.

Seriously, who in the world could imagine her coming out of a Biotic Charge, slugging a Vorcha in the face with her elbow, and then blowing a Krogan's head off with a blast from the Claymore? Not me. Horrific pandering to some demographic that I can't quite manage to describe in words.

#1 is Natalie Portman

#2 is just ... I don't know what

#3 is vamp porn

#4 is minority lip-service, although hot, and also what humankind will probably start to look like

#5 is girl band fantasy

#6 is crazed bisexual trope

People who think ME1 is better than ME2 need to book a few appointments with a professional asap.

Been busting through my second play through all day, with all the DLC added etc. Love this game so much

Well I finally just finished this, after going through a bit of a 'can't be arsed' phase for a while.

So..

Sent Legion to do a the hacking, while Garrus headed up the second team.

Sent Grunt to escort survivors back to the ship.

Chose Samara to create a kinetic field. Set Garrus to head the second team again.

Brought Garrus and Jack to the final fight.

Chose to let the elusive man get his dirty hands on the collector base.

Did I miss anything out? I was quite surprised that only Mordin died.. was kinda hoping Miranda would buy it tbh! :D

And that ending was a bit weird, looked like a million baddie ships have come to party and then it's like 'lol keep on with the side missions' - what.

Though I enjoyed it, it wasn't quite as epic as I'd hoped. I found the ending just as confusing in the first game, heh. The combat is super woolly and something I hope they improve for the next game.

Oh and something I wanted to ask, if you head to the last bit without getting

all the ship upgrades

, is it an instant game over/bad ending?

One crew-member gets glooped for each ship upgrade you neglect to install. On my last "Dirty Dozen" playthrough I was trying to get as many people killed as possible without triggering the bad ending, so went in cheerfully with a totally non-upgraded Normandy. Splat!

It's all in the name of badass dramatic effect. I mean, how rubbish would Aliens have been if Ripley had been all "Nobody dies today!!!" and got everyone out of there alive?

In other news I am right now listening to the ME1 musical score, and it's still divine.
