Games you love that people hate

Sonic Adventure didn't get poor reviews did it?

Not at all.

The original got rave reviews and I remember the second one only being criticised because it was essentially more of the same. They were ace fun.

I was talking about this the other weekend but I preferred Extreme G to Wipeout. I think that's heresy.

Extreme G was a fucking awful, jerky thing.

Yes, yes, like me.

The Megarace games, specifically Megarace 2 was played A LOT by my friends and I and it really isn't that great to be honest but it looked quite nice at the time, ran well, had power ups and stuff... dunno, somehow it was just quite good fun.

I'm really glad this thread hasn't descended into flame wars, as was said by Steve Poole in that issue of EDGE, games are getting to be more like other hobbies whereby there are games that some people like and some people don't and I'm glad we're not all shitting on each other for liking something a bit weird (and quite often, a bit shit).

Oh wait: SF Rush 2049. I maintain that the battle multiplayer is one of the best games ever, and the single player was pretty good, too. It also had that amazing arcade feel when it started up with the bass rumbling engines and the "RUSH!" vocal. I'd love to see a new version of that.

I remember loving the Trash It demo, the full game of which was given something like 18% in PC Gamer.

I fucking loved Rush, me and my housemates spent literally years playing that most nights,it actually cost me two girlfriends! Also, 'Trash it' was the first Playstation game I ever played and it put me off the PSone (and 2) for life!

I very much enjoyed State of Emergency on the original Xbox. It had that pick up for ten minutes arcade feel that some of the best Dreamcast games had but just got trashed in reviews and often gets a mention on here as being something throw away and pointless.

This is ace. Although everyone seems to have forgot how to act. Especially Boreanaz, voice work not exactly his area of expertise. Not sure if it is hated though, but I can't remember many people talking about it at the time. Anyway, here's another one:

Forgettable nonsense, but enjoyable nonetheless. The main character was even voiced by a very bored David Duchovny.

I got this around the same time that Crazy Taxi came out on Dreamcast, and I ended up preferring Super Runabout. Mind you, as much as I love it, never has a game made me so furious as when you get right to the end of a long-ass mission on this game and only just fail.

"get the hotdogs!!!"

I wish it were on the 360 BC list... I enjoyed the opening.

The original Buffy game is excellent, bar the last level, which was a fucking crime. The Collective never went on to make anything near as good ever again.

Then EA got some chumps to bash out that fucking awful Chaos Bleeds.

I don't know if it's hated exactly but I do wish I could have a conversation about it without people harping on about the original being better. Frankly I like the fact there's no time limits, the fact I'm not being chased and beaten by cops the whole time and the fact I don't have to do analogue movements to spray graffiti.

I also wish it was backwards compatible with the 360. [sad-face]

I'm another that really enjoyed Crash Team Racing. I really loved Trasher : Skate & Destroy on PS1 but no one else seemed at all interested in it, it was like the Skate of its day for me and introduced me to a lot of good old hip hop

Was that the one with Dr Octagon's Blue Flowers and J5's Jayou on the soundtrack? I was trying to think of the name of that recently, it was a bit rough, but enjoyable.

Got a lot of things right, it just didn't have the polish of the Tony Hawk series. Then a year later and Neversoft make a bmx game; Matt Hoffman's Pro bmx and I expected to like it but didn't. You'd ride around automatically too quickly and the levels weren't large enough to make up for it. There was no satisfying feeling in pulling off a tailwhip because it was all a bit too rigid and functional and a bit like like the tony hawk games became when you're darting through the environment at stupid speed and the actual tricks becomes meaningless. It was basically tony hawks with bikes and it didn't work. I couldn't help but view Mirra as a bit average but I preferred the slower pace of it and the spacious (or emptier) environments. It was kind of languid and messy but fun. And I enjoyed the sequal a lot too, which didn't get good reviews either. I'm playing skate at the moment, it probably has more in common with that.

There's a game I always wanted to try but never got around to buying...!

You should definitely give Rise to Honour a shot if it looks interesting to you. I found that the hours jet by while playing it. It's sure to get some kind of rise out of you. The way they honour the old HK action films is great. I just couldn't Li've it alone!
