I was going to moan about that Brave game, but you know what, I'm glad that they're just honest about what they're doing and rather than rip off Temple Run, they paid the developer to just adapt it and put it out there with some tweaking(the arrows thing could be a cool addition).

Right people, I'm looking for a recommendation, and my guidelines are stringent. I've been trying out some RPG's on my phone, but I'm not really feeling any of them. My requirements are thus:

  • I would like an RPG which features a variety of character classes and skills, so that the game can be played using different approaches depending on what type of character you build.
  • I want to explore a big open world, which feels large and is fun to adventure around in.
  • I'd like it if there wasn't too much dungeon crawling, or if the dungeons were optional, or maybe just some of the games objectives took place outside dungeons.
  • I'd prefer it to be either turn based, or patrially so.

Basically, something a bit like Baldur's Gate/Elder Scrolls, but on my iPhone.

Yoshimax put me on to Quizboard, which is a really nice asynchronous sort of cross between trivial pursuit played on a scrabble board. Seems great so far, time will tell how well the questions hold up! I'm petescrap on that if anyone fancies a game.

Also, I really should have figured out how to play Worms before I dived in. Only playing one game, with a random, and all I have managed so far is to blow myself up in various interesting ways  So of anyone fancies an easy victory, add me on Game Center (Pistol 451).

How retro do you like your games? Because if you don't mind them looking like this:

Then Undercroft fits your criteria almost exactly. It's free as well.

Pocket Planes is like Tiny Tower but more complicated and still terrible.

I disagree, obviously, and was up half the night playing it because I'm a tool.

Yeah, it's like Tiny Tower in that it's basically a time-management game with no real goal to it. Unlike Tiny Tower though, there's actual time management here. There are loads of things to spend coins on and how you play it will determine how quickly you move forward. You can buy more planes to earn more coins at once, or buy bigger planes, or you can buy more airports so you get more jobs further afield. If so, do you buy small cheap airports, or save up for an expensive busy one? You can upgrade the airports you've already got for those benefits but you don't have the money to do it all so you have to decide what's more important. It's only complicated at first, it soon becomes really simple to see what's going on, even with half a dozen or more planes.

Do you send an empty plane to somewhere with jobs (at a cost) or wait for jobs to appear where the plane is sitting idle?

Do you make lots of short flights or wait to take bigger loads to one place for bonus coins?

Where in Tiny Tower it could basically play itself, here you actually have to make decisions. You still can't "lose" the game and it's still hardly going to compete with some super-deep strategy game but there's a lot to do and think about. Of course, you were never going to like it if you went into it thinking it was going to be shit because you thought Tiny Tower was shit, I doubt you even gave it a chance.

If you don't like time management stuff, stay away from it. It's really good, though. Oh, and it doesn't use fucking Facebook. There is a nice social thing though. You can join a "flight crew" with your friends/forum, and complete a mission, and whichever flight crew gets the most missions completed wins a whole ton of free Bux or planes or stuff with loads of prizes for top 10, top 1,000 etc.

Added you - I grabbed worms yesterday, laughed as my opponent tried to TNT three of my worms only to send himself into the water then proceeded to jetpack into the air and forward flip myself into the blue.

edit : Also, more people need to be playing Quizboard.

Have to agree with ttk, I wasn't a big fan of Tiny Tower, but I am liking this. Feels like you are running something and actually have to put thought into it.

Looking at the leaderboards I can see already how he and I differ in the approach we are taking.

Edit: Also...

I'm enjoying Pocket Planes too. I'm in the toucharcade flight crew, currently the third biggest so you'd think there might be some bux in it :) I'm a little unclear on what the point of buying whole planes vs. parts are - if you get the three part types do you basically get the plane? If so it seems an awful lot cheaper than buying the plane wholesale.

It's a bit cheaper, yeah, but takes longer so there's that offsetting it. When you've got all the parts it takes Bux to actually build it so it's not massively cheaper.

Anybody else playing Song Pop?? Stupidly simple premise of guessing song clips quicker than someone else, but its great fun. Is it the Facebook friends integration that puts people off or are my game tastes too 'mainstream' ?

I'm finding quiz board incredibly easy. So easy it becomes boring. May delete it after this game, which is a shame as the premise is sound.

I don't know whether to curse or congratulate whoever reccomended Plague Inc.

On one hand, it's a fantastic value game for 69p being double-rock-hard-bastard difficult to win and has a easy to use, minimal interface. On the other hand, I've spent about 2.5hrs today in the works toilet playing it and have heard things that no man should have to hear.

Considering hundreds of millions of people can die in-game of various bowel disorders the background noises were strangely appropriate.
