Perfect Dark XBLA

Is it the alien plotline as a whole that people object to or just Elvis in particular? I can't say either really bothered me that much. They were like drops in PD's ocean of awesome.

The problem is that PD moves from well realised Earth based worlds throughout the majority of its running time to poorly realised alien worlds that feel like they've been tacked on with little thought at the end. Somehow, creeping around a pulsing organic alien spaceship with few identifiable features is just not as satisfying as hiding in a toilet cubicle waiting to blast a human security guard in the face.

It's not the only FPS that has fallen foul of this; Half Life comes to mind, and I'm sure more qualified forumites than I can think of many others. It's one of the reasons that Goldeneye is held in higher esteem than Pd by many.

I can't wait for this on XBLA though! I love PD, despite its faults.

So are you and incapable hulk former Rare staff members? Do you think - providing people would be filmed in silhouette and have their voices changed (so as to not risk fucking up their careers) - that various ex-Rare people could be talked into being part of a video documentary? Something that could possibly be made as a labour of love, that would focus on the story behind how that company changed, made the mistakes that it did and went from being ....

....amongst the world's most respected studios in 1997

...to a misjudged and overpriced sellout to Microsoft in 2002

.... to a figure of hate in 2004/2005.

Plus some more positive stuff within the documentary, that would be the things that came together in in spite of things. The Manhattan Project of investment into CG in 1993-1995, plus: given the management culture that was flawed even back in the mid 90's, how amazing projects like Blast Corps and GoldenEye actually happened in the way they did.

I doubt it at least for the current staff. There are a lot of ex-staff kicking about though. They seemed to lose a fair few personnel with regular "Bye bye"s in the monthly newsletter since I started there.

They had a recent cull too and although some left willingly a fair few didn't (and they used that filthy method to get rid of those they didn't want .. "re-apply for your position" :blah: , even after making all the staff do employee reviews since the MS takeover. Unbelievable).

Saying all that, with all honesty, a hell of a lot of people who still work there despite everything are some of the most talented people I have ever met. Some complete cocks too, of course :(

That looks jolly nice. On a different note, both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had a few duff levels in, it's just that PD's all appeared near the end as the quality took an absolute nosedive. GE's were spread about a bit. Runway, Streets and Statue spring immediately to mind. It does seem a bit churlish to whinge though as they still had their fun- Runway especially. *Horrifying squelching noise*

Complex (the last one with 006 running about)

You mean "Cradle", and, yeah, it wasn't so good. Facility was my favorite. Hopefully the Perfect Dark version ("Felicity") is still in the game.

And that new screenshot looks very nice.

Wow that looks really good. I really need to see it in motion though. Even knowing the power of today's consoles I still expect it to faithfully recreate Perfect Dark's framerate. I don't have any idea how it would feel to play one of those games where it's smooth.

I enjoyed Runway, actually. And even if you don't like it, it's over in about two minutes on the lower few difficulties. My young self always got a thrill out of making it to the plane with only a sliver of health left, bullets ricocheting off of the fuselage on either side of me. Wonderful.

It may be a case of rose-tinted glasses, though.

Yeah, and made one of the best games of last year.

Going a bit off-topic here:

"Alright" as that game attempting to force a lego racing build-em-up into a "banjo-kazooie" setting was, it was depressing personally (and to a great number more, I'd imagine) to realise we'd waited 6 years from Rare for "the next properBanjo/anything that is a platformer like the games of old" and got something equilivant to a Mario spin-off.

Honestly Rare? Thats what you spent YEARS on? Oh I know they SCRAPPED the idea of a proper Banjo on the way to Nuts & Bolts, but...thats the idea of "re-inventing the platformer"? "This is how to push platformers forward" and however else Rare marketed it? Are you kidding? Or just couldn't be arsed making something the fans wanted because it would be in development hell for 5 years.

Rare went so much so as to constantly take the piss out of the old games and the way they were played during Nuts & Bolts. Aside from possible comic relief, it felt more like a desperation to prove "Look! We made the right choice for what we did with this game, honest! The old games were crap!". Constantly rammed into the old, long time fans face. Cheers

From one interview I remember some lead developers on the title even admitted to NOT having played the original games.

Mistakes about Banjo aside it really smells like the lack of independence is killing what's left of Rare. I don't know, maybe they needed as many guidelines from Nintendo as they do Microsoft about what they could and could not do, but the fact they've "apparently" said they're not working on anything but Netal projects at the moment, and just looking at their output overall in the last 2 generations...it's very evident the control is not with the game makers.

(I like most loved Viva Pinata, but just put that into perspective, we had 5, FIVE different versions of the game this generation. The original, PC version, the content patch or what they like to call sequal, the DS version, and the 360 party game *though developed outside of Rare*. Does that smell of Rare wanting to spend time on their games, or shoving anything out the door.).

David Wise leaving was sad to hear as well. Thankfully the N&B soundtrack was as good a sendoff as he could have produced.

I wonder if they'll chicken out of releasing it this year cos of MW2. I mean, for multi player (which was the original's focus), it's not gonna make much of a dent is it?

Looking very nice though. Way way better than I had expected, for something I thought was just going to be up rez-ed and get a spot of texture improvement.

Anybody from the team up in Dundee on here? Wonder what degree of the venture is being handled by Rare, given their greater level of staffing, experience and resources.

I think this has been the case for a number of years with Rare. They've basically got some great IP (BK, Killer Instinct, Blast Corps etc) and are just complete cock teases about it. They'll occasionally drop a hint that they may be working on a new "Jet Force Gemini", or another one of their old IPs, and then when it actually gets down to it, fail to deliver.

I don't know if it was Nintendo selling their share (and thus losing their guidance)- Rare had been going off the boil towards the end of the N64 days (Mickey's Speedway?) and when MS offered the ridiculous amount that they did- well I think Nintendo knew the glory days were over.

I mean, everyone is getting really excited over an HD update of a ten year old game in where most of the original dev team have buggered off!! That's what Rare has come down to now...

Nuts & Bolts is magnificent, and one of the best games this entire generation. The end.

This. And about a million times better than the old B&K games. Really NEG? You really wanted Rare to make yet another inferior Mario-clone? Honestly NEG? That's what you spent YEARS hoping for? For the same old shit that wasn't that special to begin with? And then they produce one of the most inventive games of the last 10 or so years, and you're disappointed because they didn't make yet another clichéd platformer?

Just ignore NEG, he's mental. He's one of those people that complain WoW is too easy these days as you don't need to spend several nights dying on the same boss to progress, and because you don't need to grind for weeks to get a new belt.

He's likes stuff being shit, basically.
