Beryl is right though. The potential of the thing is enormous. If they get it working and then release hundreds of awesome games for it then all you doubting thomases will be eating your negativity.

It's not going to happen, but if it did then people will still hate it. They'll still hate the Wii, but then that appears to now be a failure given that it hasn't managed to sustain its astronomical sales levels for the 5th year running and only Nintendo have managed to make bucketloads of cash through first party releases that sit in the top 20 for months at a time.

these losers seem to have written it off solely on the overwhelmingly negative previews, the videos of it not working, the lack of compelling software and the ridiculous price.

Combined - the Wii and DS have given Nintendo a formidable war chest of cash. The success of these consoles has led to the development of one of the most exciting consoles yet - the 3DS.

Can't wait to see what they follow the Wii up with.

The wii and kinect aren't really the same. The wii was nintendo's new console, not just a funny expensive add on for the gamecube.

The flippant reply here would be 'it could well have been', but you're actually completely right. The fact that every Wii owner has at least a Wii Remote and a Nunchuck is a completely different situation than we have with Kinect (and Move) because there you divide the playing field between people that may or may not have invested in these peripherals, automatically closing the other avenues off. Developers have to choose what to support. 18 million Xbox 360 machines without Kinect or 3 million machines with Kinect*.

* Fabricated numbers based on nothing

I agree with Napoleon.

Imagine if it did sell 3,000,000 this Christmas thanks to incredible advertising. Then what? The very best selling games for a console sell, what? To a fifth of owners? So whatever a fifth of 3million is the absolute maximum a game's going to sell for a shit load long time. You're not going to get many developers throwing money after that.

3 million should be the benchmark on whether Microsoft have had a successful launch for Kinect as that's pretty much the number they are inferring when they talk about the preorders and comparable selling products already on the market. Nintendo expect to shift 4 million 3DS consoles within a month by comparison (to retail):

Kinect spokesman Kudo Tsunoda tells Gamasutra that the device is on track to sell millions this holiday thanks to its ability to enable deep gameplay and attract a wide audience, in a new interview from the Tokyo Game Show floor.

"The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we're looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that'll blow away any of the sales you've seen with iPad," says Tsunoda, when asked what he though about the device's chances of success.

"The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now. Kinect's really just going to boost that to a whole new level."

Apple's device sold 1 million units in its first 28 days on sale and went on to sell 3 million in three months.

You bought a Wii for WiiSports.

You got a balance board with WiiFit

You got the steering wheel with Mariokart.

Nobody bought a Wii, a balance board or a wii wheel for the potential it offered. They bought/got them because of the awesome software.

If I were Microsoft I'd flush this turd down the toilet.

Kinect Adventures? That's what we should be saying. We should be asking "How many copies of Kinect Adventures will be sold" It should be Kinect Adventures that drives sales of this abortion of a peripheral.

Nobody can deny that Wiifit looked appealing. But people weren't talking about how many Blanace Boards would be sold, it was how many copies of WiiFit.

Who actually is going to look at Kinect Adventures and think THAT I GOTTA GET. Nobody. Perhaps a tech head to check out the tech. As a game it appeals to not one fucker on earth.

Just as well. It was (and remains) gimicky shit.

It doesn't offend me actually. It was also free. But the point is it came with Mario Kart. You don't sell a peripheral without a game.

Imagine the Wii Wheel for £130 without Mario Kart. That's what Kinect is. It's a balance board without WiiFit but with those couple of games that actually used the balance board, for double the price.

Add to this that the innovations of Kinect don't seem to offer decent controller precision (much like the Wii) so hardcore gamers will tire of it quickly and you have a recipe for an Eye-Toy like product which rises and falls back very quickly.

You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about the Wii Remote's precision for some bizarre reason, you mentioned it on Gama a while back too. Where were the reviews complaining about it? It's a long, long way from the fuzzy logic and lag of Kinect.

And you're thinking of Vodafone, Baryl.

Indeed I do.

I think precision (and extensibility) are key to the long term usefulness and viability of any kind of controller because the better they are the more kinds of cool games tend to show up and, in turn, more fun for all.

You mentioned the other day that you think Move is much more precise. Do you think it will work better in the long run?

Move is more precise, but it has a relative 'canvas' to work within causing a need for calibration while the controller can lose its point of reference during play. Basically, the Move is a rockstar super-surgeon, but it's the operating theatre that is completely drunk and occasionally gets in the way of the task at hand by spinning around a bit.

With Kinect it looks like both the surgeon and the operating theatre have been consuming a case of vodka and think the patient would make a great trampoline.

The Wii foregoes any kind of drunkenness, but it comes with a bog standard surgeon in a bog standard operating theatre.

Thus ends this exciting episode of Analogy Adventures!

I think MS will probably sell 3 million units worldwide by the end of the year simply because of the marketing they are putting behind it. The big problem MS have (other than the tech actually working) is the long term sales for it. If it doesn't sell well at launch 3rd party devs will drop their already small support for it which will only leave MS and if history is anything to go by MS will drop it as well if it doesnt look like a huge success. If it doesnt sell MS predicted 3 million units by xmas this year I can see Kinect being dead and unsupported by both 3rd parties and MS themselves by the end of 2011, with the tech being upgraded and used in MS next console.

It's unlikely. Even the iPad didn't sell that fast.

While I know it seems like advertising sucks the sheep in again and again, it's not actually true. I suspect they'll actually sell about 0.5m of the units. Ish.
