So Microsoft are spending half a billion dollars on marketing for this. If it tanks, surely heads will have to roll among the executives?

I don't think it'll tank, with Microsoft being so aggressive with it.

Yeah, I read that. 500 million is an obscene amount to spend on the marketing of one product. I imagine we'll be bombarded with Kinect adverts next month. Quite a gamble though, if it fails or even under performs then all bets are off as to where the platform will go next.

Has there ever been a more uninspired launch line up... ever?

The wii has these games, all these games, for cheaper, directed solely at the causal market that appreciates them, and the hardware sales are certainly not soaring anymore. Who is going to buy this weird fucking shit for a console tailored to wargame enthusiasts.

I was reading today that Apple have nearly outgrown Microsoft as a business, and I don't think Kinect is going to be the golden ticket to keep Gates at the No.1 spot. Every cent they put into this Kinect they might as well shoot into space. It's fucking retarded.

And I just read about the $500 million PR spend. My God.

If they really are that stupid let them die. Utter utter retards.

I suspect it really has huge potential because of its nature as a controller.

I know the Eyetoy was first real consumer based camera technology but I think this is only the start something huge.

Not so much in gaming, but as an ineractive element to which other things can be utilised.

That said..

Being able to remove backgrounds and polygonise the user into a game-world is pretty Tron.

Speculating a bit, I don't care for the wii-like applications (apart from some of the sports ones) but assuming its accurate (and i've done no reading up on this device at all) - its potential is massive which kinda annoys me but along with the Wii we are possibly seeing the first kind of technologies that will really devde gamers of existing, established consoles.

Before this, we all used similar pads and things and there was a niche users of things like Wheels. Then you had genres that split certain gamers up and then the Wii but this is pretty big.

Its kinda annoying because this (like move) are instant Wii-killer's by virtue of having better graphics and connectivity by default.

And probably better controls. So whilst the Wii onced ruled roost, i can see this tech taking existing gamers over.

It could also mean less development time spent on well known genres, to which many older gamers have settled into and most importantly (i susuepct) the delay in a new console which we are now overdue. IMO.

I certainly don't hate these controller but as older gamers you can slowly see technology moving away from you. Although that said, older gamers played the Wii more.

But to me, at times, it feels like an evolution moving away from me, whereas before these controllers all technology (which was just updates on existing tech) was moving towards me. I embraced it.

You just have to learn to change with it i guess but thats kinda how i feel.

Move was pretty shit with only sports champions that even felt like it worked really. Ms games cover bases, third party hoyed out the quickest things they could like they did with wii. We wont see the decent software till next year, it isnt too bad a lineup i will be getting sports dance central and the game that comes with it should be all he moving i will need this year.

Whilst Sports Champions was clearly the showcase app, stuff like Start The Party, Tumble and Echochrome 2 were also good showcases for the hardware, and the Move patches for Resident Evil 5, Eye Pet, Heavy Rain, RUSE and MAG meant that Sony had a lot of bases covered with the software from day one.

They've also got a second wave coming out at the end of the month, featuring Time Crisis, The Shoot and The Fight so I wouldn't say they've done bad by early adopters at all, at least I certainly don't feel as if the device is being weakly supported.

How on earth can it be worth spending 500 million on marketing something. Are they expecting to make a profit at some point? Else why bother with the whole thing.

Even more amazing when they are only making a million units initially ;)

I think the technology has a huge amount of potential in the future, especially with things like interacting with your PC, TV and other devices. But the problem is MS are releasing a cut down version of the tech they originally developed and third parties seem very happy on releasing their shovelware which they released on the Wii for the 360. It was this lack of quality control that pretty much killed off the Wii for most traditional gamers and why most people on here think of Kinect as a joke. If there was a real killer app for this then Im sure most of the 360 users would be more willing to take the plunge but at the moment it just seems like Microsoft are trying to copy the Wii and in a way its been a success, they are getting the same shit that Nintendo got.

One bright side to this though is that the games that were shown off at TGS look pretty interesting and are not dance or fitness titles so there might be hope yet.

What's the general rllmuk consensus then? I haven't been in this thread for ages.

Initially way back when it was first announced I thought Natal looked cool, but now I think it looks a little bit shit, thanks to the unimaginative launch titles and the fact they clearly haven't fixed the input lag etc.

it's also no where near as powerful as people first thought...

I think the consensus is that it'll be a flash in the pan and ultimately a fail.

I think for console gaming at home its going to be good for a relatively small number of dance and exercise games, providing you have enough space. On the whole a complete flop though. Never the less MS will adapt it to other uses - flogging it to gymnasiums with special fitness software could be a money spinner for a start.

Yeah right of course theyre going to say that  Lets be honest, Microsoft are not going to admit that they have seriously cut down the specs. I dont believe there have been any specs released but I remember some devs being vocal about MS cutting stuff out at the last minute and giving them dev kits that didnt match the original specs. Also if you watch the first promo videos, the ones where MS were saying that Kinect could scan real world items and then use them ingame and other cool features that are nowhere to be seen in the final product.
