When is this daft head/retina tracking shit going to stop ? It's bloody obvious it could track your head moving about but it's of NO PRACTICAL USE in a racer or fps.

It's like the second last straw along with "needs space" that the haters are holding onto.

Wrong.

Watch the Arma 2 video posted above.

Just watched that video and it looks like the most unnatural thing in the world. I can't imagine it feeling at all intuitive to be playing a racing game for example, and want to look left and right by turning my head and yet keeping my eyes fixed on the screen.

But that one's a fair criticism, no? I mean, I'm not a hater - I'm really tempted to get one. But to make it work, I'd have to rearrange my entire living room, because the way it's set up at the moment, there isn't enough room for a single player, let alone two players. So the space consideration is a major one for me. That and the fact that there aren't any games I'm very interested in yet...

There's a bit more to it than that. :)

If you have no interest in stroking a tiger or playing Wii Sports and party game clones, there's nothing for you. The lack of any games far out-weighs any head tracking or space issues.

As soon as it gets some games, I'll be all over it.

There other game types the tech could be used with. I think the hard part would be getting away from using anything like this a stick replacement.

"You do know what practical means ? "

Yes, unfortunately I think it might be beyond my abilities to explain it to you, ill give it a try...

Head tracking makes the game more natural, whether it's an FPS, a driving sim or a flight sim. When you drive, fly or shoot in real life (paintball I guess would be the closest thing most of us get to an fps) looking around is integral to the experience.

Being able to quickly look around while driving to see where the car next to you is.... practical. Never mind the fact that when your driving you look into corners naturally so you can see more of what's ahead, I would imagine the same applies to flying.

Being able to see where the ground is while landing your helicopter just by looking down quickly, .. pretty obviously practical.

Being able to quickly look around in a FPS will def help keep you alive as awareness of your surroundings is paramount, which I believe in that context could be termed practical.

In real life doing these things is fine because you do not have screen to focus on but when playing a game on the TV you have to keep you eyes on the screen. Small movements is fine but then you will have to be quite a disciplined gamer to sit completely still and not move inadvertently.

People with a Kinect and Dance Central:

How much floor space is needed to play this properly? I'm definitely interested in this game, but the whole space thing still has me worried.

Thanks,

About seven feet from the Tv for me. Great game though

I'd like to suggest about 7' from the TV. Any closer and the camera may have trouble detecting both your feet and your arms in the air. Unless you're a midget of course.
