this for multiplayer + the fact i'm getting mario galaxy and have never played it before = awesome christmas day

EDIT: looks like all the people arguing that this would sell well in the edge thread may be correct, EEDAR is prediciting it will be the bigguest seller of the year and help the Wii retain number one position this christmas.

Has ol' Reggie not started an argument with some journalist saying that NSMB Wii will outsell MW2 (but only on one format) over the "festive period"- ie until the end of January. Did he not also take out his will and start slapping it against the table, insisting "I AM THE ALPHA MALE!!!" as part of the ritual?

I think it will probably outsell MW2 (again, only on one format) but it won't do it in a way where people will be getting up at 3am to buy it. It'll probably just sell shit loads with people buying it for Christmas, but over a number of weeks. They'll be hoping that the "word of mouth" means more sales after Christmas. And Reggie will feel his seed of power shoot from his alpha penis, as the journalist cries (like a baby) in shame.

I'm finding this a massive improvement over nsmb ds. And pretty challenging from World 2 onwards. Either that, or my Mario skills have declined significantly since my childhood NES/SNES days.

It's particularly more difficult in multiplayer. I was playing it with the gf, and in addition to the level design, you have to constantly be aware of the othe person's positioning. I can't imagine how insanely difficult it must be in 4-player.

I got to the third world last night and turned it off when I saw it was an ice world.

That's exactly what I did and haven't been back since. It's just crushingly over-familiar. Nintendo have got some cheek peddling this as their big Christmas title.

It was especially annoying because ice is second only to desert in my list of disliked level themes, so after going through that world I wasn't really in the mood. I did the first level, actually, and it wasn't too bad. The penguin power up is like a much improved version of the terrible blue shell from the DS one

Yep, it limps from one worn-out cliche to the next with no grace at all. There are some nice tweaks here and there (like the way some enemies interact with the music), but nothing to justify the games existence IMO.

I'm not sure how much fun the casuals are going to get out of this either as it actually gets quite difficult quite early on.

I think it should have been so much more, especially given its prominence as a Christmas title (their only Christmas title at that). It should have been something really ambitious and amazing (like Yoshie's Island). Something to prove all the Wii naysayers wrong. As it is, it's just decent.

I would have definitely preferred something much more ambitious and original, it is a shame they've played it pretty safe and gone for what is essentially "New New Super Mario Bros + multiplayer", but if nothing else it's a new 2D platformer at a time where there aren't many pure 2D platformers around and eighty or however many levels there are which overall are really well designed is good enough.

I think they're trying to sell to the mainstream- i.e. the 40 million or so who bought the first Super Mario Bros game, or the 20 million who bought Super Mario World. As good as Yoshi's Island is, it's too much of a move away from these games (which explains it's relatively poor sales figures in comparison).

They set out to make a new version of a 25 year old game, which they've done quite well from the sound of it.

Anyway, why are you complaining? It's not as if you've parted with money for it.. :)

I think Yoshie's Island sales were relatively low because it came at the end of the consoles life. Departing from the obsession with sales figures for a moment, Yoshie's Island remains one of the best (if not the best) 2D Mario games of all time. It's that game that they should have been aspiring to (or SMW), not the duff DS effort.

No, they've set out to make a remake of a remake of a 25 year old game.

I have actually. I've had the US version on pre-order for quite a while now.

I think the level design in this is excellent in this, and not really bothered by the so-called 'cliches'. The big coins are genuinely tricky to get, there are ridiculous amounts of secrets seemingly on every level and the new power-ups are well thought out. The Penguin Suit is the best power-up since the SMW cape. Just the fact that it completely negates the effects of ice makes it pure win. The Ice Flower is very nice too.

I'm already thinking the multiplayer will be completely redundant after World 1 for all but the most sadistic/coordinated of people. I have trouble completing some of the dungeons by myself, let alone with 3 other players getting in my way.

Either that, or everyone will let one person do it and float in a bubble until the difficult sections are out of the way.

Honestly the main complaint I have about the game is the Wii Remotes. Even for my Asian-sized hands, it's sometimes too small. And surely they could've just mapped some of the waggle controls to other buttons? I've got a perfectly good Classic Controller Pro sitting around doing nothing.

The problem is that they've already done that with the DS one, so to see them retreading that with a few ideas from SMB3 and SMW thrown in is disappointing.

I dunno, this genuinely shits all over the DS game in every way. This is what the DS game should've been to begin with. And then some.

Oh yeah, explain Donkey Kong Country which came out in the same year.... even Donkey Kong Country 2 managed to just sell more.

It'd be a good idea to have the CC Pro option, definitely.

As for the multiplayer, you're best doing it in Coin Battle. There you've got levels set up purely for multiplayer, and they work better than just tackling the normal levels co-operatively as a group.

I don't know then. Maybe Donkey Kong Country just got more limelight at that point then. Eitherway, forgetting this new Nintendo-fan obsession with sales figures for a second, we all know that Yoshie's Island was the superior game.

I admit, Yoshi's Island was a great game- but it strayed away from the basic formula of the Super Mario games way too much (in my opinion). So now you have two "branches" of the Mario series- the Galaxy/3D branch and the 2D New Super Mario Bros branch. I see the Galaxy branch as being the big ambitious one, and the New Super Mario Bros branch as a way to get back to their roots. Geddit?

Anyway, Galaxy 2 is due out in April.. so it's not long to wait for that, if the New Super Mario Bros thing isn't your thang. Thing.
