New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I'm not denying the gameplay elements.

The idea of multiplayer mario is cool.

You're right though noting the look of 4 swords, I thought it was magnificent.

This is what I'm disappointed in, with SMBW. Where's that shiny newness to it?

Four Swords was arguably just a tarted up version of a GBA-multiplayer afterthought if that's how you're looking at it though.

Anyway, this has the potential to be brilliant. If it's anywhere near the genius of Four Swords (still the best multiplayer game I've ever played), then we're in for a treat. And NSMBW does seem to be aiming for the same cooperative/competitive dynamic that made Four Swords so intoxicating.

People who are expecting a great coop adventure will probably be slightly disappointed, 75% of the fun comes from the competitive side of the game.

As annoying as no online is, the rather free-form nature of the competitiveness would make online with randoms the most frustrating and annoying thing ever. It’s really is a difficult experience to explain unless you’ve played Four Swords as that is the only game I have ever played that has that balance between coop and competition. It’s like playing coop in an RTS and destroying your mates base as you’re about to win, slapping them on SoR2 just before you move between sections or blowing them up on an FPS. The actual goal of ‘winning’ is a distant second to the comedy ways that you can make life difficult for each other.

Miyamoto confirmed it in his roundtable. Pretty mcuh put me off it.

Boo. Extremely disappointing. I wonder what the single player experience is like...:)

Although my wife has always wanted to play "proper" 2-player Mario and this may suit.

Everybody here seems to think that playing with random people online with no voicechat will make the multiplayer better.

In other words: 2D mario with bots. Who act like absolute cocks once they get Yoshi/fireflower/penguin suit.

Just because nintendo have fucked up their online doesn't mean they shouldn't even try anymore. Are people seriously saying this game wouldn't be better with optional online against friends with voicechat? It's the only way I could regularly play multiplayer for a start.

So it's a 2D Mario "core" Mario game, not a spin off

And it's not a handheld release, and you guys are still complaining?!?! jeeeeeesus

yeap

Nintendo announce a new Mario Galaxy, a new side scrolling Mario for Wii - this first 'big screen' sidescroller we've had from the masters since Yoshi's Island and to top it all off - they totally surprised everyone with a new 3rd person 'Japanesey' Metroid...

and people are still moaning that Nintendo are doomed and have lost the plot.

If I were Reggie, I'd take all their names and advise Nintendo never to work on a core game again. More Woman's Murder Club please!!

I agree to an extent but if 'casuals' start going online and getting fucked all over the place by people being dicks then they'll never touch an online game again. The multiplayer is really only suited to playing against friends, and due to Nintendo's gash servcie this isn't actually possible.

I'm pretty sure I was just saying a multiplayer game such as this deserves online support, it needs it for most of us I'd imagine. Please stop with this straw-man crap Scott.

If you'd ever played Four Swords (and it is easy to understand why people did not - that game was stupid in its requirements)you'd understand why local multiplayer is key to the competitive/begrudgingly cooperative experience. Also the key to Mario fun is the pin-point controls and feedback and with even the slightest lag this could be ruined. LBP coped because its controls/jumping were loose and woolly.

I did play Four Swords, would have played it more than once if it had an online option. I also play a few games online. This would be fine online. Of course local multiplayer is more fun, it always is, but without online this game becomes redundant for me. And many others. Pointlessly so when the tech is readily available.

You know, I know this is going to sound cold and lazy but to all the people crying for online please do try and get some real life friends. If you haven't got real life friends then don't flipping buy a multiplayer game. Jesus, Imagine if Goldeneye had been online instead of Split Screen. Shuder at the nerdiness of that thought.

You know what, games that are built for online multiplayer gaming are redundant for me, you don't see me boo-hoo-hooing about it.

This game is built for online multiplayer though. More so than Resi 5. It just doesn't have it. I understand you and scott consider this statement criticises nintendo and thus needs destroying, but it's pretty fucking obvious. I can organise an online session easier than an offline one, with real life friends too!

Seriously, Ramone, why post that?

Why post what? Online gaming is clearly not a major concern to Nintendo. But we still get people who really haven't shown that much interest in the Wii showing up talking about how Nintendo fucked up their online. I mean, some people honestly can't understand that the huge majority of people don't give a toss about online gaming, a lot of people find online gaming it a bit weird and, you know I'm going to say it right now - sad. I'm sure most people think people who parttake in online gaming are sad. I do! So, you know, this is a multiplayer game with no online. It's not Nintendo fucking up here I'm afraid, it's the people who can't get one single other humans into their house.

Good for you!

This was the criticism you said

Just because nintendo have fucked up their online doesn't mean they shouldn't even try anymore

Now, I can assure you that even though I love Nintendo more than I love my children I am not tricking myself into thinking Nintendo's online is fine, I honestly think it is fine and not fucked up at all. You know how you're glad MS didn't go all waggle? Well I'm glad Nintendo didn't go all Live. What about that then, it's like we want different things!!

Well when Nintendo can implement online in Mario Kart and SmashBros I see no reason why they shouldn't with this. It's not exactly shocking to imagine you might want to play the game more often than you can get friends over? I have friends I play online with who I couldn't play on person with very often, it's not hard to understand.

the game is not built for online multiplayer, and if you've played Four Swords you should know that. I agree you should be able to play online with friends but the service isn't there to do it.

I would like there to be the opportunity to play this with friends with real-drop in gameplay. My Wii owning mate down the road sees me online playing Mario Bros Wii and there's a space for him to join the game..

BAM! There it is...

he's in and we're speaking over Wii Speak and throwing each other around and grabbing coins and having LOLS.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's system doesn't support this.

Primarily, for me, this will be a single player game - and as a single player game, I'm expecting it to be something special.

If it is clearly designed around multiplayer and the single player game suffers, I will not be happy... but I can't see that happening with Nintendo's biggest Christmas release game.

If they can do mario kart so well online this would have been perfect. They have wii speak, we have a forum so we could organise online sessions easily. This is such a missed opportunity AGAIN bought to you from Nintendo. *sigh*

It's probably down to just boring technical reasons like lag. Driving games are pretty good for hiding lag. 60hz platformers with lots of player interaction less so I'd guess.
