New Super Mario Bros. Wii

If it is clearly designed around multiplayer and the single player game suffers, I will not be happy... but I can't see that happening with Nintendo's biggest Christmas release game.

I thought 4 swords was more fun as a one player game. Controlling the 4 links and their formations worked really well.

If they can do mario kart so well online this would have been perfect. They have wii speak, we have a forum so we could organise online sessions easily. This is such a missed opportunity AGAIN bought to you from Nintendo. *sigh*

I agree with Ramone. I just don't really see the need for online to automatically be built into every game for the benefit of a subsection of the audience - in fact I hate that attitude. It's not as though online gamers have nothing else to play, and personally I'm thrilled that it's being built as a truly local multiplayer game.

FFS stop being a dramtic apologist. If I said every game needs an online mode I would have said it but I didn't. I'm not a avid online gamer I play now and again and just like the option to know its there if I fancy for certain games. Like some others here I have no friends that play games (Wii or otherwise) there just not interested. This game looks like its multiplayer focused and I would of like the option for myself to play with like minded gamers from this forum.

You know, I know this is going to sound cold and lazy but to all the people crying for online please do try and get some real life friends. If you haven't got real life friends then don't flipping buy a multiplayer game. Jesus, Imagine if Goldeneye had been online instead of Split Screen. Shuder at the nerdiness of that thought.

:) Not a problem when you're twelve and have a bunch of other similar-aged mates. When you're 28, and your mates have jobs, girlfriends and other 'real-life' things to take care of, gathering four people at once to play the new Mario game is not something you can do every afternoon, is it?

What's the best thing about having sex with twenty eight year olds?

There are twenty of them!!

BAM!

Did you complain WiiSports didn't have online? Nintendo, it's all about social gaming, baby!!! And so am I.

It makes perfect sense.

You know what John. These people think you and I 'put up' with what Nintendo offer because we're backward. They cannot believe that 50 million people are perfectly happy with the Wii. I swear they think these 50 million people are either fanboys who would buy anything or people who know no better, people who haven't experienced the delights on offer on the 360.

Easy tiger. I'm not being particularly dramatic - I seem to remember you saying something along the lines of "This is such a missed opportunity AGAIN bought to you from Nintendo. *sigh*" which seems a bit more dramatic than anything I said. I mean, if you only play online every now and then, why get wound up about this one game not being online?

Yup, Ramone's quite reasonable. It makes more sense to play online with your DS, since you need another DS and game to go multiplayer. But the Wii multiplayer games have always been about sitting in front of the tv with your friends/kids/girlfriend(s). I don't even think NSMB is really suited for online multiplayer. It's jumping around and having fun, not the competitive, intense Call of Duty.

It would just be nice for Nintendo to offer the choice with regards to online play, I can understand why they don't, but ultimately for the people who do want it (which naturally on a forum of gamers is going to be quite a few) that isn't going to be much of a consolation. It's like the voice chat debate, some people will argue it's actually better that Nintendo don't offer a choice because they don't personally like it, for the rest of us, it would be a nice feature.

Mulitplayer is this title's USP I guess and I will not exprience it in 4 player as intended. When I get you and Ramone wading telling me I'm basically wrong to express my disappointment its not right.

I'd have thought that being an amazing and fun and accesible platformer was the USP. the multiplayer is the equivalent of the drug dealer giving out free drugs to newbies. Gamer encourages their partner to play and then maybe when the gamer is out the next day... Partner picks up and plays themselves

This game is built for online multiplayer though. More so than Resi 5.

Not really, Resident Evil 5 is a game where players really need to have their own screen to play properly so the only decent options are system link and online. Obviously this is designed around players sharing one playfield, so local is the best option.

I don't think it would have done any harm to throw in a rudimentary online mode, but to be honest if I had the choice between playing on my own or organising and playing with friends online I'd just play on my own. Online doesn't really do it for me.

I think it's brilliant that Nintendo aren't putting online multiplayer into New Super Mario Bros. Wii! Playing with other people online would be like playing with bots - you should only play it on the settee with your mates, so you can all share the fun. It's just like Wii Sports, except nobody's moving around!

Also it's FANTASTIC that Nintendo have only bothered to make three player characters for a four player game! There were too many characters in Left 4 Dead. There should have been two Bills, and one of them should have been wearing red clothes. That would have been MUCH better. Left 4 Dead was rubbish, with its four characters and online play. It wasn't any fun at all - it was like playing with bots! I wish Nintendo had made Left 4 Dead.

I'm soooo happy with my Wii. I'm glad Nintendo are re-releasing their entire back catalogue on the Wii. I wouldn't play any of those silly games before, but now they're on Wii they're supercool!

What rubbish are you gibbering. Clearly as displayed the co-op is the feature that is prominent here. Not saying it will be rubbish in single player but you will be missing something if you cannot have at least one person to play in co-op. The girlfriend it is then but....when will she be available to play :). However if I had online co-op....

This is sarcasm, but it speaks truth. People should stop making excuses.

Mind you, I'm stilling dribbling over the prospect of Super Mario Galaxy 2, so never mind.

I know you're being sarcastic, but I agree with this. Especially if you swap "mates" for "kids".

by and large people are dismissing the 1 player component of this game... ok, if it turns out to be weak, I'll eat my hat and probably not bother with it... however, I'd be very surprised if that's the case.

The whole game is based around drop-in play. Pick up a remote and join in with someone who is already playing.

It's really a shame, this could be a fun little title to play, but due to proper lack of TLC that Nintendo usually give their games it will be nothing more than simply a fun multiplayer game to play. With a better art style that doesn't directly use graphics from the DS game, and actual online play, this could of been something special, but is instead just "okay" at best.

The main feature for me is that it's a new 2D Mario. The multiplayer just looks like a fun bonus which just happens to be a fun and easy feature for them to demonstrate and sell the game off the back of. It's not like it's essential coop like in L4D or something, in fact it isn't even coop.

I thought that NSMB was a very weak game but this co-op stuff I like the sound of but its likely to be useable to me 364 days of the year beside christmas perhaps boxing day if I'm lucky. Nevermind I'll get over it *weeps into pillow*
