New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Up to world 8 now, I've used two continues so far, though a brief bout of playing single player whilst sober blitzed me through a whole world in about 45 minutes and saw me rack up 22 lives and 11 star coins. Maybe it's not so hard after all.

Doesn't everyone just farm for lives in 2D Mario games? Using the classic turtle trick near the end of one of the levels in World 2? Or that Lakitu/Yoshi level also in World 2 where you can farm the spineys between two blocks for lives as well.

I like that when you get 99 lives

Mario takes his hat off.

God this game is frustrating multiplayer! I can't figure out of having the characters interact is a work of genius or the work of satan! I lost count of the amount of times I was pushed down a hole by my wife's character getting in the way of a jump. Its a lot tougher multiplayer than single player that's for sure.

I just spent some time watching the skill videos in peaches castle.

Amazing scenes. Truly some stunning gaming feats.

If anyone doubts the multiplayer design, check out the 4 player 3 yoshi video. Posted earlier in the thread but also one of the skill videos. Flabberghasting.

I'm on my 3rd continue... Found the world 1-2 endless 1ups and am now much relieved.

This game is superb.

It can be difficult, but it's nowhere near as bad as something like the Lost Levels. I don't agree that it's easier than the original though.

Mario games have no nostalgic value to me. I had one solitary NES owning friend at school, who soon saw the error of his ways and swapped it for an Amiga. So apart for a few goes on SMB, I didn't play Mario again until Uni and I bought Mario Collection on the SNES. I first played World and Yoshi's Island on the GBA. More recently, I've snapped up all the VC Mario games. Even though I've played them both to completion previously, I've been stuck mid way though both SMW and SMB3 on VC for months now.

The level design and inventiveness of NSMB Wii easily sits up there with SMB3 and SMW. I'm not a fan of the Mario Party map screen, but the meat and potatoes of the game is a joy. Difficulty wise, while it is tricky - very much so when there's more than one of you playing - it's no where near are hard as the NES games or even SMW. I've been playing this with my barely co-ordinated, usually game hating wife, and we're up to World 6. Most of our deaths come from getting in each other's way, rather than the game being punishing. In single player, NSMBW is much easier than World or 3, for sure.

I know the world has gone mad when a nsmw game is up there with all time classics smw and yoshis island. Crazy scenes. I thinks people are getting carried away with the new game feeling. This game will be as forgettable a the DS version.

Definitely, but it's not like the nintendo-herd have much else to be excited about. Well, except sales figures.

I don't happen to hold the opinion that NSMB Wii is up there with those classics, but you've got professional commentators (and die-hard retroheads) like Brian Crecente and Jeremy Parish suggesting it's right up there, so it's fair to say that opinion isn't merely confined to a handful of forum posters, and it's not really fair to denigrate those who hold that opinion.

Why you have to term people who are enjoying it 'the Nintendo herd' is beyond me. I'd also like to know what's so LOL-worthy about my post, as I'm baffled by your response.

Ah, not bad. It's just that my opinion doesn't count.

I must remember not to base what I enjoy on my own feelings in future.

I think people need to fire-up their Super Nintendos and have crack a SMW and Island. I did exactly that, and guess what? They're still fucking brilliant, just like everything Nintendo released in the 90s.

Never heard of them. In fact, I've never heard of any of the names you keep name-dropping. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Why don't you try making your own mind up?

I have made my own mind up, you complete cretin, as you'd know if you bothered to read my post above. I don't think it's as good as those games, but two professional writers, both of whom grew up on SMB3 and World, think it's right up there with them. My point is that plenty share the opinions of those who think it's a classic, so to laugh and call people names when they dare to have an opinion that's different from your own is incredibly rude.

Bcass... You're not doing yourself and favours in this thread. Laughing at anyone who thinks this is comparable to SMW.

See, I first played SMW on VC. yes, I do think this is as good if perhaps even better. Yoshi's Island I played in GBA and I have the same thoughts. I suppose I'm simply not qualified to make a judgement though because I didn't play them o. The snes and am therefore not real hardcore enough for you.

And another thing... There are kids playing this today and for them, this game will be their SWM.
