New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I'm not talking about whether people find this game easy or not, in fact that has literally nothing to do with this particular discussion

It's got everything to do with this discussion. If loads of people are finding the game easier than me, then that hardly makes me hardcore does it?

To be honest, the Wii is pretty Marmite - we all know that. But the idea that there's some great conspiracy going on is unfair. These are both well-reviewed games in general and the threads were generally positive. What's wrong with that? bcass made the point that he doesn't like it as much as previous Mario games which personally I agree with. But banging on and on about it seems pointless when most people don't disagree but at the same time a lot of people are really enjoying it. To be honest, from many of your posts it seems like the Wii just isn't for you. Just like Bioware games are my personal Kryptonite. I long ago recognised that high scores for their games wouldn't mean that I would enjoy them. But I don't go into those threads and start telling people repeatedly that they're sweeping the game's flaws under the carpet or they're all saps because they like sitting through hours of tedious and irrelevant dialogue trees, if you see what I mean. (Not that I'm accusing you of that, but you know what I mean).

Personally I finished this last night and really enjoyed playing through a proper 2D Mario. It's definitely better than NSMB DS and it's really challenging in parts.

Thank you for the well-reasoned response. Perhaps my issue is that I really think the Wii should be for me; Super Mario Galaxy blew me away, and these days I generally prefer colourful, fantastical, non-violent games (of which Nintendo have created many brilliant examples in the past) to darker, realistic more gritty escapades. Discovering all those SNES and N64 classics has also been an absolute pleasure.

I look forward to playing this game. I'm sure you can understand why people might have reservations about trying it after the disappointing DS outing - especially as this one looks so similar, has the same-ish title, and because the main new feature being touted is the multiplayer aspect (which is a bit irrelevant to me: I'd rather hear about other innovations in a brand new 2D Mario game.) The memory of the laziness of Animal Crossing on the Wii still lingers... But enough people have stated that it's longer and more challenging than the dull DS attempt to convince me to take the plunge.

You can be hardcore and shit at this game, it's okay. We don't need your badge back just yet.

Phew thanks!

:P

I've completed SMB 1, 2 & 3, SMW, Yoshi's Island & NSMB-DS, and all the various 3D Marios - but this is in a league above them in terms of difficulty. World 3 is about as hard as the final levels of SMW

Must get back to this at some point

I think that sense of the Wii letting people down is partly what generates a lot of the antagonism between the two groups of people. I can absolutely see where you're coming from and that to some the Wii will always be a hugely frustrating machine. For me, with the 360 and PS3 doing such an amazing job of pleasing the hardcore the Wii's existence is even more essential, even if it does go down the odd cul-de-sac. For me the failure of third parties to really get to grips with it has been one of the real disappointments.

I had the same reservations about this - particularly as you say after Animal Crossing and the DS NSMB which I thought was weak. I can't promise you'll love this - a lot of that will depend on whether you feel you can ever let go of how great SMB3 and SMW were. But it's undoubtedly the best 2D platformer in recent memory and it's far better than the DS version.

I'm enjoying this a lot. I'm in world 7 now. I've about 40 lives, have only seen the Guide Block twice (not used it, though... my ego!) and I think the game's difficulty's spot on. The only times I've sworn, is when trying to get some of the Star Coins, some of which are immensely diabolically placed. But yeah, it's a good game.

Things I don't like so much:

- The penguin suit improves movement in water, but only by a little. It's no Frog Suit, that's for sure. (Other than that, it's an amazing power-up, though).

- I can't keep Yoshi when finishing a level. What the actual fuck.

- Before entering world 7 I had to do an awesome airship level that ended with an incredibly shitty bossfight against Bowser Jr. You had to fly a clown car and shake the remote to boost him into electricity. This controlled horribly, and it was the first time in the game where I died more than once where it felt like it was the game's fault instead of mine.

It's a really good platformer, and I'm actually a bit sad that this isn't on my DS, as I want to play this on the go. I have no idea how I would rate this against all the other Marios. If I had to try now, I'd rate this under SMB3 (the best 2D one, OBVIOUSLY) and above SMW. (Also, why's everyone talking about Yoshi's Island all of a sudden? It's boring, especially compared to its two Mario predecessors.)

WHAT.

All of a sudden?! People have been touting YI as the best platformer since it was released.

I have nothing else to say to you.

Finished the game without the Guide Block appearing & got the sparkly star. Excuse me while I feel smug for a moment.

^_^:omg::eyebrows:

Right, enough of that. Now to track down those Star Coins, Secret Exits, & continue being brutally humiliated by

World 9!

Has anyone else been going through the game & thinking "if I was going to hide a secret it would be right there" & finding out you're right?

Its happened a few times & i'm glad I can occasionally get into the level designers mind, though the hint videos still show me how far off I am most of the time.

Good snipping of the rest of his response! The "hardcore credentials" tag was obviously attributed to you going on about playing game x on the right hardware 15 years ago for the only valid experience, not about whether you're good at a game or not. If you're going to argue the toss at least make an effort.

Nice try, but that isn't what I actually originally said. I'll leave it to you to waste time searching back through all the posts to find out why you're wrong.

Yes.

It's the Mario force. You're a Jedi. Just like me.

Only with the propellor suit on.

That thing is a gift from God I tell you.

Edit:

Oh very well then!

I don't particularly care about how precise I was or not, I just believe that's the sort of thing that the hardcore tag was referring to as opposed to you finding a game easy or hard, that's all.

Do you have to beat the entire game without it appearing once, or can you just play a level as many times as necessary until you can beat it without the guide block appearing, then rinse and repeat for every level?
