New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I forget about the spin jump all the time... the trigger could've been used in this case I reckon.

I do like the waggle to use the propeller-suit and to add that little bit onto your jump though... from my play so far, the regular waggle to extend your jump isn't actually needed and is only there in the of-chance you didn't quite time a jump right... so the waggle does a good job of communicating that desperation you get when you know you're not going to quite make that jump.

That's true. It's like you're going "agghh!" and waving it up and down and you just make it. :)

I made a mistake before - you don't shake it to throw. But you have to shake it to pick up, and I was shaking the damn thing desperately to try and pick up the poor little mushroom as he was being rotated to his death. I forgot to press 1 with the shake. :(

I'm finding the Wiimote a bit uncomfortable to play with in general, though. The D-pad is doing my thumb in. Great game, though.

Oh while we're having a wee whinge about controls, I'm still not getting on with the whole "wiimote sideways" thing.

There's a small short ridge of plastic at the base of the wiimote which is fairly sharp and really digs into my middle finger.

It might sound really petty, but after 2 hours play last night it was really starting to get sore

Obviously I haven't progressed enough through it to give a valid opinion, but so far I think it's a solid platformer, though not nearly as good as Super Mario World (which I've only just played recently on Virtual Console).

I played through SMW a year or so ago and although there was obviously some familiarity with the levels I found it quite boring and slow at the start, which is not something i've felt with this yet.

The only issue I have, like a few others, is the map. It's just a little too 'linear' like NSMB, rather than the open world of SMW or the more varied worlds of SMB3. It's a minor complaint really as it has no effect on the levels themselves.

I have the same problem with that bit of plastic too but the jackets make it a lot more comfortable (and a little chunkier too).

Put me in this camp too. And this is coming from someone who played it during his childhood, on the Game Boy Advance and then the virtual console.

It was with the latter that I found i've always found Bros. 3 the better one and especially after the excellent GBA port.

You mean you don't play it with the "sheathe" on?!?!? Nintendo WILL BE FURIOUS!!! The protection is to protect you from getting BAD AIDS from the control. Or the control smashing into the telly. Or something....

Completed!

That last battle was pretty great.

I skipped world 7 so there's that to explore, oh and all the exits, um and all 207 Star Coins, then World 9 ...

Yeah lots more to do!! but personally I'm not going to bother. Some of the Star Coins terrified me in their hellish placement - plus I've got an ever growing to-play pile that needs addressing.

It's no reflection on the quality of the game, more a reflection on my obsessive game buying habit

Maybe I'm just a bit crap, but this game is HARD!

I suppose we wanted hardcore Mario, and that's what we got. I'm really pleased it's this hard, but pretty frightened of the later worlds if it's already this difficult at the end of world 2! I hope there's some respite here and there....

Either it doesn't get much harder or I've just got better at it but I found it hardest around then end of level 2 and the start of level 3. I've certainly not seen the Superguide box since then. I'm at the last level now I think but I've rushed through it, also skipping level 7. I'll be going through collecting all the coins when I'm done though.

It is just me or is carrying a Toad to the end of a level a bit boring? I suppose the idea is to force you to learn how to get through the level while helping someone out, but I'm just not keen on it to the point where if see a Toad calling for help from a particular level I had trouble with rescuing one from the last time I might just pass on by, cold-hearted jerk that I am.

If you think world 2 is hard... Wait till you get to world 3.

Collect gold coins to unlock skill videos and be amazed at the gaming prowess on display

Something that struck me last night as I romped through World 8 - The game has practically no difficulty curve.

There's a small ramp from World 1 to 3, then from 3 onwards it's more or less the same difficulty throughout the rest of the game (with the odd level that's slightly trickier than others)

Yeah, I can see that you get more skilled at this. It's a great thing to experience in a game - apart from Super Mario World recently, the last time I remember really experiencing this was in the first Super Monkey Ball (the second just seemed unfair and badly designed.) Most single player games I enjoy don't really have this steady sense of actually "getting better" - the game just throws new or more intense situations and environments and puzzles at you that you (obviously some competitive puzzle games involve a similar sharpening of skills, but I haven't played many for a while.)

Having said that, does anyone still die for really, really lazy and stupid reasons? Every so often I'll start a level I've got half way through and have almost conquered a few times as little Mario and just walk straight into an enemy or enemy projectile. Or I'll get through a bunch of jumps I normally find difficult with relative ease, and then seemingly quite deliberately jump into empty space. For no reason.

I was terrible for this in World 7

The ability to wall jump saved my skin more than a few times after some really silly misses.

The gameplay in this just gets better and better. :) Having just gone back to try out SMW again on Virtual Console, however, I think I really wish they'd used sprites for this one. With super souped up SNES-style graphics and improved animation, it could have been so sharp and beautiful...(even though I thought the Wario Shake Dimension game was awful, it's sprite-based visuals very pretty). The look of the older pre-DS 2D Marios is more characterful and refined, and I can't quite get as lost in this one as I'd like because of the visuals - in fact, that just shows how great the core gameplay mechanics are, because if they weren't as good as this the visuals would probably put me off bothering.

I used a nail file on that cunt within a couple of weeks of owning a Wii.

Asura and I are thinking of getting this at some point when the price goes down. I was interested in this when It was first announced but I never intended on buying it. The Multiplayer sounds really fun though and Asura and I are always looking for decent co-op games. Although he's hardly played it, I was delighted when I remembered I could collect Star chips for him in Super Mario Galaxy!

Only want to play of I can play Luigi!

World 3 is awesome. And I don't usually like that level theme! This game is too much fun.

Does anyone actually like controlling Mario with the nunchuck? I didn't bother trying it because I assumed it wouldn't be accurate enough and because posters on here implied it wasn't worth bothering with, but after a while of trying it I think I prefer it. I like being able to run with the z button and shooting with the trigger is very satisfying, and my hands don't ache at all like they did using the Wiimote sideways. I think that happens because the D-pad is too small and feels a bit shit in my giant hands (the SNES classic controller works fine on Virtual Console games, with it's bigger D-pad and larger size overall.) You loose a tiny bit of precision and you'll occasionally have to swap back to the sideways Wiimote mode for really tricky levels, but I recommend getting used to the nunchuck if you're like me and find the 'proper' way too uncomfortable after extended play. I know it sounds blasphemous, but you can and will get used to it. :)

1) "You've completed everything in NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. Wii!" Ph34r me, bitches.

2) Getting those last two Star Coins in level 9-7 will cause me nightmares for years to come. I spent almost an hour just getting those two.

3) 9-8.

ULTRA MEGA BULLET BILLS <3

4) Have you guys unlocked the extra level in world 8? It's magnificent!

It's this sort of stuff that's getting me excited about the game. I'm a completist obsessive!
