New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I tend to find that i'll get quite far, die and then gradually die slightly earlier each time after as I get angrier and angrier. It then gets to the point where I get about 2 seconds into the level before jumping into the first goomba you see. It's not even that easy to jump into goombas!

I found World 2 the hardest so far but I think that's just because I was rusty. I don't actually think the game is that hard, I've nearly completed World 6 and I haven't seen the Super Guide block yet.

I have to say this is much better than I was expecting. A big improvement on NSMB DS and the perfect antidote to a lot of the overblown blockbusters I've been playing through recently.

My daughter is home from Uni for Christmas so we had some 3 player games over the weekend and it was much more fun than I expected. Real laughs. We started going through the earlier levels trying to collect all the coins I'd missed in my single player game. We've had real trouble finding some.

I also finished the game yesterday so that we'd be able to save each time we got some new coins. That feature should be available from the start.

yeah you can save at anytime you want! what is wrong with these people!!!

Although quicksave is good it's not the same. I didn't want to save for a later date, I wanted a safeguard after I'd achieved something e.g. getting all the coins in a level. Otherwise as happened to us you can lose your progress. We'd got a few coins and then got game over in the castle level so we lost all those coins. Had we been able to save after each level we'd only have lost the most recent coins. If you get game over in a quciksave game the same thing would happen.

Fucking hell, what a cry baby.

MAH COINS!

Cheers. More likely I have very limited time to play games and pissing half hour up the wall and then having to replay those levels again. All because of a design decision which could only have been made to artificially lenghten the game.

I can't make up my mind if the dancing enemies thing is genius or the stupidest fucking idea ever (I know it's not the first instance of it). On the one hand it's really cute to see them shaking their stuff. Aww, adorable. And on the other, that fucker just danced when I was jumping and now I've landed beside him instead of on his fucking head and look I'm dead you bastard.

I believe it to be genius for the just reason that you encountered. it's yet one more thing that you need to be aware of (much like the pattern for the spikey ball throwing or hammer throwing bastards)

I just watched
and was completely blown away...

(link contains World 1-3 Super Skills Spoilers)

Working through the 3rd world on my own... loving it

Such co-operation & co-ordination.

I doubt i'll ever manage to play with people like that, & that makes me sad. :(

Finished this the other day without the super guide ever appearing B) I enjoyed it a lot and it had some nice ideas but it hasn't left much of a lasting impression on me the way SMW and Yoshi's Island in particular did when I played them a couple of years ago. I'll definitely go back and try and get all the coins in the future though.

What I posted in the xmas reviews thread - how did everyone else get on with this and their families this xmas?

Playing this with the family was a chaotic and funny affair. Was it fun? To begin with yes, but it's way too advanced for casual players and after the novelty wore off it just got frustrating for the newbs. I'm quite dissapointed as it's pitched as a family game but is totally bewildering to new players, with no tutorials or direction for gaming novices - even the menus and controller layout are confusing compared to how other Wii games tackle this. A missed oppurtunity. In two player it was better fun (got to World 3) and the co-op interaction is funny. Haven't tried it solo yet.

Really the game feels very "messy" with multiple players, bouncing off each other is annoying, it's hard to track what's happening on-screen (you thought Smash Bros was bad, try it with enemies, moving platforms and coins everywhere!), and the gap between good and novice players is harshly proven with players at the back being left behind and killed. It isn't a very friendly experience. However I am guessing with experienced players it could be fun.

Still, it's Mario and the core is still solid.

I think it has some incredible stand out levels that will remain with me forever. The dinosaur rollercoaster was incredible. In fact most of the moving autoscrollers were so well designed.

Even 7-6 was genius but that caused the super guide to appear while my brother and I were trying to get all 3 star coins. Grrrr that one damn level has ruined the sparkly stars forever! Still I can be happy, this is the second Mario game I've finished 100%, the other being Mario World. Plus I got to do all of it alongside my brother over the Christmas break. What an awesome 2009.

Saying that, I definitely agree with Alan. This isn't a game designed for co-op. With two players it was bordering on extreme annoyance on multiple occasions. Some of the autoscrolling levels would be impossible.

Was that the Buzzy Beetles level? That bastard cost me my star as well.

Yes it was. Such a fun level though. If I'd have known I'd lose my sparklies I'd have gone to a different level during the break.

Yep, I'd already completed the game and thought my star was safe. When I came to save, I'd forgotten all about that shameful guide block. The level wasn't all that hard to complete really, but for some reason I was obsessed with getting those star coins...

Oh, fuck. You don't get the sparkly star if it appeared but you didn't use it?
Correct.

What if it appears but you don't save and turn off, then clear the level next time around without it appearing? Is that ok or does it brand a big FAILURE mark on your savefile as soon as it appears? World six castle :omg:

This is brilliant. I've been playing this in single and 4-player and it is simply marvellous. Oddly the game it most reminds me of (outside of the Mario series, of course) is Half Life 2. That is because when I play the two of them I constantly am in awe of the game design. It is just flawless. I am amazed at the relatively cool critical reaction it received - how can anyone who has played the game say that is is tired and unimaginative? There are so many new and wonderful ideas and the level design is tip-top.

Plus the multiplayer is insanely fun, trying to find the right balance between fucking each other over and actually progressing in the level is nice. Also it isn't actually that hard even with players who aren't as good as myself (and I am not exactly great) because as long as someone is still alive you can stay in.

IGN hate it - they're convinced it's just a scaled up DS game. All you have to do is watch some of the skill videos to realise just how much thought has gone into each level.

it's ace.... hard

but ace.
