She was amazing. Soken not so much

Anywho, Saturday Treasure Maps20210515_191552.thumb.jpg.5690624e46cea0ea0b33f85f0539648c.jpg20210515_191554.thumb.jpg.714832a34ff84cf708014b83f85f2b98.jpg

lastly, a few months back I set up a Discord for XIV players that are over 30 and are looking for people to play with. There's people from all DCs there, if anyone here wants to join, feel free to do so.

The closing of Fanfest was incredibly hard to watch. COVID wasn't the only reason why patch content has been delayed over the past 12 months or so, Soken revealed he'd been battling cancer and (I think) only Yoshi P knew about it.

Yeah I watched some of this video and damnnnn that's powerful:

As someone pointed out in the Youtube comments, one of the first things Soken did after getting out of hospital was performing live on the fanfest with the most hilarious shitpost of a song ever, I couldn't stop laughing - what a f**king legend

They looked really brutal back in the day. Last year I was recommended by my guild to check out the Turns of Bahumut for the story and spectacle. So I booted up the party finder and two kind souls hopped in and took me through the entire lot in an afternoon (unsynched of course). I watched some videos later to see what it was like in its heyday and it looked pretty grim. I also can't imagine the pain and suffering that mazelike level where you have to bounce between nodes must have been for the folks coming into it fresh!

Definitely worth checking out for those who haven't done it, and I'd also recommend doing the Alexander questline which has a fun story and some epic setpieces in it.

Yea, I did all the Coils back when they were new, T9 was utter bullshit. :hmm:

The story is a must. You can see why in the expansions SE did both a normal mode and hardcore difficulty mode for raids, allowing the majority to see the content.

It's amusing how the mechanics are broken when you are 30 levels above what they were designed for. FC1 goes from, don't let the adds combine or they become unkillable, to don't let the adds combine or they may take a little longer to kill.

The only raid content I've not done as I took a break and came back just before Shadowbringers. :hmm:

Can anyone recommend a good class for Solo play in this? Thinking of giving the free trial a go over the weekend.

All of them, to be honest. It's very single player oriented. It's more like a "book club" of an MMO. You'll spend a lot of time doing your own thing, and then come together to either socialise or do a dungeon. I may actually suggest avoiding the tank classes (Marauder and Gladiator) to begin with, as they're very dry in terms of gameplay style. As you'll get a very basic DPS combo, and then a lot of defensive tools which I just don't think sells XIV well at the beginning. I did gladiator up until 50, and was shocked at how different the DPS classes I had just unlocked were (Samurai and Red Mage).

If you manage to hit 50, as much as it pains me to say it, it IS worth sticking through the story line of the original expansion. It does a lot of "Bad guy of the week" stuff, and then out of nowhere, the narrative goes up 4 gears and pretty much stays there from that point.

Lovely stuff. I'm going to go white mage I think, expect me ducking back in here to ask a million questions.

Ask away 🙂

I've not been on since patch day, got so much to do on it now, I'm only on the first stage of the ShB relic still.

I think most people here are on Chaos. From there the server isnt such a problem any more as you can travel between, though I think there's more that have their home server as Moogle.

I’ve recently gotten into this in a big way and, just to provide a different viewpoint, I’ve played as a tank pretty much the entire time. I’ve just hit Heavensward and have my Warrior at lvl 62, Dark Knight at 54, and I very quickly levelled a Dragoon to 50 just to try it out.

I find being a tank really fun in duties/dungeons as opposed to being a dps where I feel like the mechanics are less important in the early levels.

That being said it’s so easier to level another class that I wouldn’t be that concerned about what you start with.

If anyone fancies curb stomping through the Omega (Stormblood 8 person) raids unsynced let me know. I’ve done the first set of 4 but don’t mind going through them again if anyone needs them.

What’s the newbie path like for this these days? I heard a lot of fat was trimmed.

There’s a lot of products and I’m confused as to which one lets you play for free indefinitely as opposed to only a month.

I can't help you on the freebie side but yes, they cut a lot of fat. But - the base game is still pretty rough (albeit still decent). Even with the changes there are pacing issues and some tedious slogs in there, and the combat doesnt pick up until you get more abilities, to begin with its very basic unless you are new to mmos.

Having said that, the game picks up a lot towards the end and its in Heavenward (which is included in the free trial) where it really gets good. Definitely worth trying out and sticking with it for a while, its worth it in the end, if you can get through A Realm Reborn. Some people think Realm Reborn is fine, or even good, I found it a bit of a slog but I did enjoy the overarching story, the bosses and of course all the non main quest stuff you can get up to in the game. Its still less grindy than WOW used to be back in the day. I had heard the expansions were where things picked up and so I was willing to put in the time to get there. And I'm glad I did because Heavensward and Shadowbringers are pretty great.

I got the ‘Free Trial’ a couple of weeks ago. It includes A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. I don’t think there’s a month limit, or indeed any timed limit at all? There fucking better not be after tanking 50+ hours into purely mainlining the main story quests and still not being finished with A Realm Reborn. Will be raging if they take it off me before I get to Heavensward.

It’s free until level 60 isn’t it?

Looks like it. I think the free trial caps you at level 50 for A Realm Reborn (including patches 2.1 through 2.55) before allowing you to level up to 60 for Heavensward bizness. I think. I dunno, im a total fucking noob at the whole thing even 50+ hours in, but enjoying it all the same. It’s the first MMORPG I’ve ever played.

You are not capped, it is just the quests you do between ARR and HW are all level 50 quests and so your levelling slows right down, until you are a bit into HW you will start levelling again... also if you do manage to level much you won't have access to job quest givers until you open up HW.

You dont need to do dailies at all if you follow the msq (main story quest) these days in A Realm Reborn or even Hevensward. The msq now dishes out so much exp you can purely main line the story. Plus new players get a ring that boosts exp by 30 percent quite early on. Personally I wouldn't use the ring as being overlevelled makes combat more boring, even before the latest ARR changes I was always at least 3 levels above the mobs and sometimes up to 7 or 8.
