I haven’t really dabbled in raids. I haven’t done much of anything besides MSQ’s. No real side stories or anything, other than a few “kill X amount of monsters” at the start of A Realm Reborn before I made the decision to hard mainline the story as quickly as possible. I enjoyed the associated story when levelling up my gladiator into a paladin, which makes me keen to really devote a bit of time into levelling up some other jobs for my guy. I think once I’ve caught up with all the expansions I’ll be happier to slowly potter around, tinkering with things at my own pace, when I don’t have a heap of story to get through.

Oh, I actually did do the side story involving the sad frog in Matoya’s Cave, cause how could you not? It also meant more time hearing the gorgeous music in there:

😭👌🏻

Man, I really need to get involved in the more social side of things. Get a keyboard for some chat and get in and about some raids.

Okay, now I think I've hit the *real* Heavensward ending (The Final Steps of Faith and the tons of cutscenes that follow it). This must be what everyone always talks about when they said that Heavensward is where the story really gets good and they weren't wrong! My group even failed the big trial twice, which is unusual as I've been steamrolling through all the MSQ content to this point. I'm really looking forward to a change of scenery with Stormblood (which I guess is what these next set of quests are setting up), but I will miss Ishgard and the dreamboat that is Ser Aymeric.

Will be interested to hear your opinions on the character "Lyse" when they're introduced.

I’ll be sure to report back. I’m sure it won’t take me long. I’m treating this as the exact kind of game I won’t be able to play once our baby arrives and so, along with getting as many lie ins and spontaneous meals out as possible, I’m playing as much of this as I can between now and December.

Plan is to have Stormblood done by October then do Shadowbringers in time for the Endwalker launch 👀

My fucking 60 days of free play have expired with just 4 more main story quests to go, right at the end of the Dragonsong War stuff (patches 3.1 to 3.56, in between Heavensward and Stormblood).

I was wanting to tie off those loose ends and park this for a bit, hopefully play some other games before moving onto Stormblood. It’s gonna sting paying a month’s subscription just to do those 4 quests 💸

I could have done it all within the 60 days but instead got engrossed in Limmy streaming 12 fuckin Minutes these past few days.

After playing through the Heavensward dungeons first time as a NIN, I’ve gone back to them to level AST and I have a new appreciation of how good the healers I’ve played with are.

I just came off of a Dusk Vigil run and was shocked in how hard all three of the bosses are when you’re trying to keep yourself and the tank alive. Compared to healing in the ARR dungeons where bosses are generally the easiest bit, just this first one is much more mechanic and damage heavy in a way that I didn’t have to worry about when playing a DPS.

I still find healing stressful when it’s not going well, but I’m determined to push AST through to 60 to get that lovely Welkin armour set and to share Stormblood MSQ XP with my Ninja so I don’t end up way ahead due to the Road to 70 buff.

Also: I saw Fantasia is on sale at the moment. I am tempted to switch from Roegadyn to one of the more normal sized races but I’m worried that would be a gateway drug for a financially devastating addiction to redesigning my character every week 👀

Did you not get a fantasia for finishing the ARR msq?

Gear matters for healing so make sure you are in decent (Poetics stuff is good) gear.

I did back in the day, but that was on a different character that I lost access to.

I bought the ARR story skip with this one so no free Fantasia and I didn’t get one for finishing HW.

That'll never happen!

Completed a Realm Reborn. I'm enjoying it much more now that I've got to some of the more challenging content. Not sure if its just because I'm coming to it so late, or the difficulty is low or now unbalanced, but it seemed almost impossible to fail most of the earlier match making content. Even the ones marked hard. You didn't need to coordinate anything and just melted the bosses with brute force. I didn't even really notice any mechanics on them.

The extreme trials were so much more fulfilling. Although it did depend who you matched with. One set will just yell at everyone for not watching tutorial videos and coming fully prepared. Fortunately the other category where people will work it out together or someone more experienced will progressively give increased direction is more common. When we finally defeated The Striking Tree it actually felt like an achievement and a real team effort.

Same with the raids. The first 3 I unlocked were fun in that there were a lot of players, but everything died almost instantly and it didn't really feel like there was any team play. The Binding Coil though changed that and a few of the turns took some decent effort.

My favourite moment was The Keeper of the Lake. We had a healer who was clearly not great at the game but we struggled through the earlier sub bosses taking multiple attempts. When we got to the boss he quit after a couple of tries and it felt like we had wasted nearly 80 minutes. Just as we were about to abandon it matched in another healer but we thought there was no time. They just said 'we got this', and he pulled us through with less than a minute on the clock.

Yeah the reality is that for most of the MSQ content you will fairly easily brute force it, aside from bosses with instakill mechanics. If you die it often doesn't matter because you'll either get rezzed fairly quickly or watch from the ground as the team finishes off the target. It only starts to get more challenging maybe mid-Stormblood and into Shadowbringers. The optional raids though can be quite a bit harder but still not anywhere near Extreme difficulties. Extreme is where you get a good challenge without any modifiers like minimum i-level, though difficulty is quite varied. There are even some Savages which are easier than some of the Extremes.

For me who also came late into the game playing the newest patches and new end-game content has been a breath of fresh air, because it actually requires attention and you will get wipes if people are making too many mistakes. Looking forward to Endwalker where everyone will basically start at square one and we won't be decimating story bosses in seconds.

I do wish they would add a duty finder roulette for min-ilevel/no Echo for earlier parts of the game so new players can experience msq content at a higher difficulty without having to mess with party finder. I would have loved that.

God I hate it when people tell you to go watch a video before doing a trial. 1. If it's your first time through then it really spoils the magic when you've watched it already and 2. If you're anything like me you'll easily forget what you're supposed to be doing and fuck up even further.

Much prefer it when you have to figure it all out along with others and/or have someone willing to guide you and (politely) point out where things have gone wrong.

EXTREMELY into Astrologian at the moment, lads. Hit level 60 and now am ready to roll into the Stormblood MSQ looking fabulous.

Thanks to the /gpose function for the lighting here. Shockingly difficult to take a normal screenshot with your character lit up.

I'm continually impressed with how well they implement the different job mechanics in this. Juggling regular healing with drawing the AST cards, choosing which to play for Divination and which to burn with the Lord/Lady of Crown thing so you time your big Divination buff cooldown with getting three matched seals from the cards feels good, man.

White mage (starts as conjurer) is the simplest of healers, and is a 'restoration' healer (ie it replaces health)

The only other option at start is Scholar (starts as Arcanist) which is a shields healer (does some healing to health pool, but can also give health over 100% for brief time using shields).

Some like one style, some the other. both have the big bonus of healer queues!

Stormblood is such a nice change of scenery after the extreme cold gothic snow and darkness of Heavensward. I’m at the Ruby Sea and it’s all been lovely so far. Kugane in particular looks absolutely gorgeous on the PS5.

I’ve had no problems at all with Lyse so far either, despite the warnings in here. I’m enjoying the character work so far (especially a couple of the big villains they’ve introduced). This is a good game.
