Borderlands from Gearbox

Me and Del just spent 4 glorious hours on this. Pretty much had to force ourselves to stop. We didn't want to get too far ahead of our proposed co-op party. The loot is excellent. Picking something up then using it whilst exclaiming - "This gun is fucking excellent" - occured more than once.

Even though it's main component is FPS - I'd say it's more loot whoring RPG with quests than a shooter. But you're shooting things all the time. It was getting bloody frantic at points with just the two of us. There's loads of great action. I'm really loving it, but it's kinda difficult to pigeonhole. Really I think if you like the sound of it, then you're probably not going to be disappointed.

It does sound very much like it's just moving from one epic gun to another though - it doesn't sound like there's much in the way of character progression in itself, like fallout. Am I missing the point?

It's all about the loot, and it's so amazingly addictive. Think Diablo, and forget Fallout. Biggest surprise of the year for me, as I really had my doubts about this game beforehand but playing is believing - and dammit I keep going back for more! More guns! More loot!

I was going to play Brütal Legend, but I couldn't stay away from this. So I started an Alt!

The amount of loot that we missed at the start of the game earlier was unreal. Don't forget to have a good look around the second you get off the bus!

I'm lovin' that the loot containers have a little light on them so you can spot them and tell whether they've been looted or not from a fair distance. Oh and critical exploding headshot finishers for the win!

whats the enemy ai like?

The animals just hang about till startled then steam in for the attack in packs. The humans do a bit of dodging and cover finding some of the time. A lot of the enemies can be bullet sponges, especially if you're weapons are underpowered for the enemies level. It's quite easy to get into a situation where you up against some enemies that you can't really take on yet until you've levelled a bit. The gunplay is satisfying but this is no realistic sim, it really feels like an MMO with loads a fucking guns and shooting stuff!

It's a four player experience where enemies charge at you relentlessly. But I already have a Preorder for Left 4 Dead, so where does Borderlands fit in? :P The locations look very samey and the action looks pretty pedestrian. It's the kind of game I desperately wish there was a demo for so I could confirm or confound my suspicions. Inbetween Dragon Age, L4D2 and Meh-dern Warfare 2 (hey, the single player should be good right ) I don't think I have time for Borderlands too. Maybe in the quiet period next year?

So how does co-op work in this? Can I drop into someone's game with a character I've already built up, play for a bit, then drop back into my own game with all the accumulated loot/exp etc?

That's exactly how it works.

I started with the soldier but last night I played through with the other characters to level 5 (which is when you get access to their spceial power thing). The Siren seemed the easiest to level up but I think that was just down to her starting weapon being a good all-rounder. I figured it was worthwhile playing over the start 4 times just so I never have to sit through the intro ever again and when I play co-op I've got my pick of all 4. Think I'll stick with the soldier for SP.

Brick. :)

I started as Roland, quickly realised I had made a mistake, re-rolled as Mordecai, but then got hit by a bit of a difficulty spike. All of a sudden things were taking a while to drop and I was wishing I had more vitality. When the co-op session was over I started again as Brick and I'm enjoying the game even more. I can't wait for some more co-op tonight. All you fence-sitters are missing out on something very special. If you like your loot games, you'll love this.
