Borderlands from Gearbox

This arrived yesterday, playing on PC (AMD 64 X2 6000+, 4GB, Radeon 4850) (Gamespy name 'tyagi').

First impressions were very good... until the game started randomly crashing. A bit of research and it appears to be a common problem with Radeon 48xx cards. The solution for me and many others is to manually set the fan speed to 40% and to reduce the GPU clock rate by 10-30 MHz. This worked a treat and no more crashes (I was also having crashes in Dragon Age and it fixed those too).

So. Back up and running, it plays really nicely at 1680x1050 with everything on high, and looks great. I put about 3 hours in, getting past the first boss and picking up some more open-world quests.

I won't get in to a gameplay analysis as that's been done to death in this thread. My main comment on the PC version is that it does feel like a console game that has been ported quickly to PC. The reason for this is the user interface. The flow between mouse usage and keyboard inputs to progress through user interface menus/dialog boxes is a bit broken IMO.

The main thing is pressing "enter" or "escape", or clicking on OK/Cancel, when my mouse pointer is over on the left side of the screen or elsewhere due to interaction that was required to produce the dialog box. I'm currently hitting Enter on my Numpad instead of shifting the pointer across the screen, but it also sometimes seems to accept a left-click. Not too slick anyway...

Other than that, really like it, and in some ways feels like a Westernised-mix of Monster Hunter, Diablo, and Motorstorm.

Well after feeling the game was totally pointless and giving up playing it for a few days I went back last night. I'd previously ploughed through the area with the mine(s) to collect 4 bits of a rifle for a quest and, having found sledges safe house at the top I'd gone in there as I had a quest open for that too. My quest there though was still listed as tough at level 13 so off I go and plough back down the the mine area I'd previously come through and dinged level 14 just before exiting. My quest in sledges safe house is now listed normal and I'm just about to hack my way up through the mine area again :)

Its still feeling pointless.

I do have a great shotgun now though that fires elemental electricity bullets every now and then and can boost my health with hits which is good fun up close so, based pretty much on that gun alone, I'm carrying on :(

Been playing this on single player only and have just

found the second alien artifact after killing Kron

. Is there much more to go? As much as I've enjoyed it so far, it is now starting to get ever so repetative. The landscape everywhere is just to similar and it's actually getting a little dull now. I actually feel bad for saying that because it really is a great game and I want to love it so much but I can't help but feel it's more like work now than fun. If there's not much more to go I may stick with it and hold on to it for the DLC but if there's still a whack of more of the same then I may just put this to rest now.

Mi issue with the ending was:

1) The trip up the mountain lasted faaaaar to long. If it was about half the size then it would have been enjoyable, but it just seemed to go on forever, and I was running out of ammo by the time I got to the boss (which mean't I had to use the alien weapons against ol squiddy).

2) The squid or tentacle beast (or whatever it was), wasn't very hard. Not as challenging as some of the other bosses, as you could simply duck in and out of the pillar to shoot its eye / tentacle and then duck for cover again (with the occasional run between pillars to avoid the missiles). The only thing it had which the others didn't was a stupid amount of health.

3) Even after killing the boss, you don't gain entrance to the Vault (which is what I thought I was playing the game for), and therefore received no weapons or special items. All I got was some money which I had no trouble getting hold of anyway. May as well be given a lifetimes supply of toilet paper.

Great game, but if i'm honest a disappointing ending.

Then stop playing. When I've got all I can out of a game, even if it's halfway through, I stop playing. Your hobby shouldn't turn into a chore.

I went after

the first artefact at the alien digsite

last night and some mobs with huge shield bars turned up. I fucking panicked. I couldn't do shit to them, and it was looking lost. I lobbed what I thought was Transfusion Grenade at them, only to find it was a fucking shock grenade. Shields gone, Sledge's Shotgun on (10,000% Burst Fire, fact fans. That's right, not 1%, not 10%, not even 100%, but 10,000%. Shame it's only got 2 shells per unload) and raped them in the face with it. I laughed heartily.

For anyone struggling with the "find parts of weapon" quests: the parts are NOT directly on the waypoint! It wouldn't be any fun if they were. :) Instead, when you get near the waypoint, DON'T open any chests and look at your compass for the swag icon. That'll pin-point where the first part is and once you've secured it you check the swag icon again for the position of the next part and so on. Simples!

You will. You'll suddenly get summat that makes you go "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW" I've had a ridiculous handgun for 10 levels or so now. It's 37x7 damage or some shit, it's wicked. I'm switching my Sniper and Shotgun regularly though (well, I was untill I got Sledge's Shotgun which is unfeasably powerful). I find myself swapping for lower DPS but higher accuracy on the sniper though. I've had to let my exploding one go as I can't hit shit with it.

DLC Video Preview - Minor Spoilers.

For those who don't want to or can't watch it, the DLC will have 50 new quests, 5 new dungeons, new weapons, enemy types, bosses, the DLC should be between 6-10hrs long and will have a stronger narrative.

:)

Oh shit, that sounds like proper DLC. None of this shitty Ultor Exposed rubbish.

Oh that's what shock grenades do! :)

Shit I really should read the fucking manual at some point

Level 14 now, still haven't found any guns which are super ZOMG amazing like other people describe, just the odd pistol or sniper rifle which lights people on fire.

Wait until you get a sniper rifle with x4 explosion elemental. People quite literally burst. Or the Volcano rifles (my faves) which even if they don't kill people instantly, will kill them from the slow burning.

I prefer to have my weapons accurate if not powerful for long distance, and then stupidly powerful but with a wide spread for close-range.

Sometimes you'll be able to take out two or three people in one shot with a powerful scattergun.

I'm playing as a Soldier, and happily upgrading my turret. It now recharges my health, has increased fire rate and has elemental upgrades dishing out shock, explosion and corrosive damage with each shot. Plus reduced cool-down time and a couple of other bits & bobs too I think.

Ah. Aha. Ahaha. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Every time I leave New Haven for Rust Commons West, there's a couple of huts that spawn bandits. As I go past I chuck my sentry down and watch it rack up the points for me. Streams of blue & green 12s and 13s EVERYWHERE.

Can't wait until it can fire rockets too.

My fave gun for a long time was a steel stinger smg I picked around level 20. It has really high accuracy, does decent damage and although it has no scope it's so accurate it's lethal at all ranges. Only just stopped using it now in on my 2nd playthrough at lvl 40.

The DLC looks good from that preview. I like talk of a stronger narrative - that was a definite low point in Borderlands, the storyline was paper thin and characters never really developed. The ending felt like they'd rushed it out.

Damn, That looks the bog's bollocks. Proper DLC and no mistakin'. Sweet.

Have they said anything about the level cap?
