Yes ... I'm not sure how they work out the percentages on those things, but my mind - no doubt warped to the point of insanity by years of calculating weapon accuracy in Eve - tells me that 0% accuracy would mean that the weapon always misses. Which it doesn't, of course.

As long as you can hit a barn door at five feet with a shotgun, it'll do for me. Especially if the hit causes the barn door to explode and/or set on fire. But failing that, splintering into a thousand pieces will do just fine.

The more accurate shotguns - especially those with scopes - are nice and all, but ... KA-BOOM, close enough to finger the entrails. Nice. Knoworramean?

More "am I doing it wrong?" type questions.

I'm level 16 and I'm doing the "gather some crystals in a cave" mission. And fuck me I'm finding it hard.

Any fight with anything more than 2 of the bandits turns into an epic slog, they can take me down in about a second so I have to slowly chip away at their health and then sneak off, wait for my shield to re-gen, and repeat this about 80 times. I often jammy my way though using second wind 2 or 3 times

Is it supposed to be this hard?

Why are all my guns total shite?

All the loot drops are 200~300 quid guns that don't do much at all.

Going off this, fast.

yes you are. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, because I did that about 16 too. Hrm. Maybe look for some more powerful guns? Which class are you?

Solider

Are their particular gun types I should be focusing on as that class?

How I can find better guns? every crate I open is full of pish

The the difficulty is draining all the fun out of it. I mean the mission is listed as a lvl 15 so I'm not trying it too soon.

Well, I use Shotguns and Sniper mainly. Bear in mind that Skags have armoured fronts and are susceptible to Corrosive damage. Make use of your Grenades and try to buy the upgrades that raise how much ammo you can buy. Worst comes to the worst, I'll pop on and have a game with you, might have to be tomorrow or Saturday though.

I don't think the Soldier class has a specialised gun: it's all about building up the turret the way you want it, and using it at every opportunity as far as I can see. Having said that, I think SMGs are the most generally useful weapon - if you can find a high damage one with a zoom that's usually a fairly safe bet. It also helps in the short term to use one weapon type a lot so that your proficiency, and therefore damage, grows more quickly.

I don't know much about the Soldier class as I play as a Hunter, so I can't comment on which are the best skills to take to enhance survivability. It may be that you're not 'doing it wrong' at all but have just been cursed with unlucky drops: there does seem to be an awful lot of variance in the quality of stuff different people are finding/using. Perhaps nip onto Live for a bit of co-op and get some donations going?

Oh, I see: combat rifles and shotguns are in the skill tree. (Should have checked before typing really.)

Hmm, well that's a shame, because I've found the combat rifle to be the least effective gun in the game, bar the launcher. That may be because I haven't found any outstanding ones, and also because I don't use them much and so have low proficiency in that self-fulfilling prophecy I alluded to above. Mind you, I still use the SMG most even though I have specs in sniper rifles and pistols. They just seem the best all-round weapons, whatever drops I find - and the number of bullets they spray out seems to help with elemental damage no end.

I should mention that I prefer to use a gun with high elemental damage over one with less (or no) elemental damage but higher bullet damage. The DOT effect can be very strong indeed, and I often just spray a second's worth of rounds at a mob or two and then retreat a bit to avoid damage while their health is whittled down by the fire or acid; then pop up again for a headshot or two. (Fire is obviously particularly good for most creatures and anything other than Red Lance / otherworldly shit.)

I've got a badass assault rifle. Burst fire, 18 round clip but a single volley can kill a bog standard bandit easy. A clip and a half (short reload btw) means that bruisers go down, it's probably my most useful all purpose gun, i only ever use anything else because i feel bad neglecting them or i need something other than the corrosive it does.

Yeah, there is a lot of variety in possible play styles and preferences, as well as drops, in this game. It's one of the best things about it.

Makes it quite hard to give advice, though. By all rights I should be a sniping mofo, but I usually find other approaches work better for me given the tools I have and the way I like to play.

And - sacrilege though it may be - I don't really like the bird. I may respec and take it out altogether.

I played through with a Soldier and varied weapons for a while (putting points into improving the turret) but then started to stick points into Assault rifle bonuses and almost exclusively used one for the rest of the game (bar long shots etc). Grab a couple of nice ones and you are well set. Nice, medium range, scope, good accuracy.... yum!

Yeah Gorf, I can really recommend a Siren. I've specced mine mainly as a controller (health regen, shield up faster, faster phasewalk) but she's become badass now that I've put points in elemental. The elemental class mods, combined with a high elemental SMG completely decimates everything, I just change to higher SMG damage or more powerful elemental damage as needed using my mods now.

Aye, it's very cheap too.

Thanks for the Siren recommendations. I was thinking of trying one next, and I understand they have the highest DPS in the game, but ... they look a bit too cute for a brute like me. I guess I could always put aside aesthetic considerations in the pursuit of ultimate carnage, but I'm much prefer it if I could reskin the character so she more closely resembled a heroin addict with alopecia and bad dental work. Or something.

Thankfully, it looks like Gearbox are listening to calls for a storage space for equipment in future DLC; possibly an increase in the level cap, too (although hopefully they won't take the broken approach that Bethesda did with Fallout):

Any plans for a locker, so players could store their weapons?

We know that some people are interested in that, and we’re working on that.

Any chance of the level cap going up with future DLC?

We’re working on it. I know that’s something that people really want. You asked me earlier how difficult it was to balance everything, and as a customer I don’t care – I don’t want to hear how difficult things are – I just want what I want. I spend a lot of time making excuses, but we want that too, and we’re investing in that and I would not be surprised if we are able to offer that in the future, but at this point I can’t make any promises.

Just picked this up in Asda for £25.

Any tips for a new guy to save me plowing through the thread and spoiling anything ?

Pick up any quest you can get your hands on. Otherwise you might run dry and wonder what the hell is next, or start to grind to get through a more difficult one.

Having almost reached the end of playthrough 2, it's safe to say that if you simply stick to the quests, you'll never have to grind outside of them and you can always find something to do at your current power-level.

Don't be scared to ditch rarer items for whites or whatnot. DPS and Accuracy rule all (IMO obv). And yeah a healing shield is your friend, although if you have a shield that's 209 capacity and a healing shield that's 120 or so, take the higher capacity.
