Hands On Previews. (from later in the game, both previews spoil enemies that are probably be best left unspoiled/a surprise)

What we've seen of Borderlands suggests that it will offer all the action of a conventional shooter (different weapon classes, headshots, weapon melee, and significant cover that must be used in the heat of battle to duck out of the way and recharge spent energy shields or reload your clip), along with the unendingly random loot of an addictive RPG. The game is scheduled to ship later this month.

We spent a lot of time admiring the additive damage effects that some of our gear had. Incendiary bullets increased the chance that an enemy shot by one (or more) of the projectiles might also burst into flames, which would certainly improve the speed with which said enemy dies. We also played with bullets that passed on an arcing electrical blast with every shot that hit enemy flesh. All of this became even more important when 2K jumped us ahead to a point in the game that’s near the end and we were being chased by a lot of enemies and potential threats.
Finally, 2K added that, while players will have different styles of gameplay, which will vary the leveling-up process for each player, the gamemakers estimated that, while the level cap is 50, completing the game will only get you up to Level 30 or so. However, you can continue to level up a character through additional gameplay after you’ve completed the main game—though you should also know that, if you start the game over with the existing character, you won’t be facing enemies that are at their same starting level as they had when the game first booted up. Instead, the first characters will start in the Level 30 range, so you won’t be walking over them like they were Level 1 n00bs.

Sounds amazing, slightly annoyed that I've ruined 2 enemy encounters & locations from later in the game.

What's 'RPG-depth'? This has you levelling up, gaining better powers, loot, quests and a world to explore. Has it missed anything out? A dead flower seller maybe?

Well I was asking because in the original previews it was very-much billed as an RPG/FPS hybrid, indicating that it was more than a simple "go-there, shoot somebody, repeat ad-infinitum". And by depth I mean variation in quests, a fleshed-out world, NPCs with something to say, an epic-story...

Sure, this has levelling-up (but that seems to just be there more to try and attract a certain audience than because it's needed), the loot has always been something they've gone-on about (and by loot I just mean weapons) but doesn't on its own merits interest me, and I've not heard too much about the actually structure.

Don't get me wrong, I actually *want* for this to be good, I just want to it not bore the pants off of me within the first few hours.

Shooting a boss for two minutes and not being sure of whether they were hitting it - it just died without reacting, poor enemy A.I in general, not much depth to the quests - there was more but it sounded like it was generally a bit of a let down.

Don't little HP numbers appear when you shoot something. It has in every video I've seen. That would be a massive indication that you've hit something. I'm expecting a kinda FPS Diablo - simple combat, single minded enemies, loot and co-op larks, not fucking Halo (again) which a lot of people seem to be.

Exactly this. Enemies overwhelm you with numbers rather than intelligence. Some of the later ones are a bit cleverer, mind.

It's a shame people seem to be criticising it for what they want it to be rather than what it is. I think it's a very brave attempt to mix shooting and looting in such a way. I enjoyed the vast majority of my time with the game.

They'd have to be fucking thick not to notice the energy bar above its head depleting, not to mention the coloured numbers flying out of it.

not much depth to the quests

That's fairly true, though. But it's not meant to be a Fallout, nor a standard FPS. It's something quite different.

To be clear, Nick Breckon's problem was that the boss didn't react, not that he wasn't sure whether he was hitting it. Apparently it did absolutely nothing, just sat there whilst he slowly chipped away at its health bar.

Anyway, has anyone seen the PS3 version of this? I'm a little wary as I haven't seen a scrap of footage from it so I'm not going to put a pre-order down until I know which format to go for.

I've pretty much completed the game on PS3, no problems or issues with it in comparison in my mind.

DLC Announced

The release of Gearbox's Borderlands is fast approaching, but in case you weren't already excited about the base game, 2K just announced what the first bit of downloadable content will be. Called The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, the content will include new quests, items, and enemies, which if the title is any indication, includes zombies. Priced at $9.99 on all platforms (800 Microsoft Points if you'll be playing on Xbox Live), it's currently scheduled to be released before 2009 is through.

Of course, to enjoy that content, you'll want to have the game itself. Gearbox's Borderlands will be made available on October 20th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, and October 26th for PCs.
