Well the sun just went behind a cloud there for a bit so I had a go.

It's not Street Fighter.

I'm rubbish at it.

I should probably have bought the trial rather than bought it straight off.

It's 4:3 with borders either side and there appears to be no way to stretch it.

have you tried adjusting your xbox setting? maybe the game wont stretch, but if you set it to 4:3 it will not display borders?

All the Neo-Geo games show that layout in the opening, but it's very common to play the game with the four buttons in a box like SF2 with two lopped off the end. Try both and see what you think, when you get to the stage where feint combos and the like are committed to muscle memory you won't be able to change!

Yeah, had a much better time with the box formation! I started to quite enjoy playing as B. Jenet last night.

I tried to play some KoF '98 afterwards though, as I've never played any of them before. My god was that overwhelming. I felt completely lost with all the types of play style and characters available.

Having never played this before this afternoon - what's the secret to performing the Just Defended moves, like B. Jenet's 'Ennui Madamoiselle'? It says LP.LK.HP... I'm assuming they're in quick succession rather than all at once?

Liking this though. Exactly the sort of game the XBLA service should be providing.

Yeah you have to press them in sequence real quick after you JD a move on the ground. Simply guard cancelling anything is very hard to begin, so I can see why there's an achievement for it. You can also buffer inputs before a JD, so to guard cancel straight into a super you might input qcf, b, qcf + button. With Jennet you might be able to input the first few button presses while you're in the air or recovering from another move, but it'll still be tough because the move has quite a short input window.

Yeah, it's pretty misleading when it says "LP +LK + SP", and given the timing required to pull it off, you'd be forgiven for thinking its impossible. I've nailed it in practice, but in story (let alone competitive games) I can't see it happening - I've mapped the three inputs in question to the bottom row of my Hori EX 2, so I've adopted a claw stance that's rapidly destroying my wrist.

ARGH!

Had a few games of this earlier. Net code seems solid but I had trouble finding games with a ping under 100ms - I think this might just be a combination of crappy connection at my end and less people playing then SFIIHD/SF4 though. Also, very few people playing player matches, but a lot playing ranked.

Ack well I just bought this and am finding it hard! I'm currently playing Rock (I used to like him in CvS2), but am going to experiment a bit before deciding on a char, obviously  I'm also having a proper 'it's not Street Fighter' moment, but am determined to see it through now that I've bought it.

So! Advice for newbie please! :D

- In the only other fighting games I've played to any kind of level (SF4 and VF5) I like Chun Li and Pai/Sarah; any character recommendations that maybe fit the way I play based on that info?

- wtf does TOP-mode do?

- Can supers be chained like specials?

- Are there any rules to linking normal punches and kicks, or do I need to trial and error til I find things that work?

- what does down and both punches do? Back(or was it forward?) and both punches is taunt, right?

- what's the dealio with the both light attacks thing?

already maining B. Jenet, after a lengthy attempt at earning the "Rage of Mademoiselle" achievement. She's got a high-jump, just like Viper! And her brake-able (sic) opens up all sorts of potential on the follow-up. Really liking this - it's nice and tight (oo-er) and not without visual charm, despite its age (and the big borders either side).

Haven't gone online with it yet. Think I'll save it till I'm certain the connection's good, then we'll see what kind of netcode it's packing.

Tried out the demo and had some great fun just messing around against the AI, but I'm going to hold off purchasing until I get to play it a little more, learn some of the moves and get a feel for the system and speed. Don't want to spend the points and then have it sit there because I can't get my head around it. Even though it's relatively simple on the surface I'm someone whos never gone deeper than Street Fighter/Tekken. I is super casual, but a fan.

No doubt I'll cave in anyway and buy it tomorrow, but the demo is pretty generous! Full move lists for both characters, control changing options and single/multiplayer too (backbone take note)

Well some more time with the trial proves its an awesome game, the fighting just feels so well connected and the moves are easy to pull off for a beginner too. Hopefully I'll catch on with the other stuff. Plus I have a TE stick, would be rude not to buy it.

I've got no idea what the hell I'm doing on this either. Not enough big nosed French people throwing people into the dirt. It does have blue haired girls raping people at long range. Well I think it's raping, I'm not entirely sure. I do know it's tremendous fun, even for button mashers like me. I've even managed to win a few games online somehow. I like the fact that the absolute basics are quite easy to pull off, even if the technical stuff is out of reach.

Online is a boon too. As long as I'm fighting someone sub-100ms, it tends to be good. I have had some awful games with a second or two of button lag, but they are in the minority. So I'd say the game is at least OKAY! [insert buster wolf joke here]

Had a good run of games, including a period of schooling from Willei. Online versus seems to run really well at 65ms and under - and maybe it's just me, but anything above that seems noticable (more of a problem for just-defending, and anything that directly follows from it). Ultimately, you'll always know what kind of connection you're dealing with before you begin the match, and the vast majority of UK players sport pings under 70 anyway. As you might expect, everyone else, er, doesn't.

I caved and will probably get LIVE again I reckon - the four buttons are condusive to a pad and its as good as I remember it.

There are more character I like to play with in this than in any fighting game: Butt, Gato, Rock, Terry and both of the Dong Hwans.

I hear Kevin is top dog in the game (but I havent really ever spent any time with him), is that right?

Both of the Kims surely? There's only one Dong. Heheh. Dong.

I play as Kim Dong Hwan in his fetching pink outfit with the blond highlights. I have won one ranked match out of six, and am about 50/50 in player matches. It's going to take a while to re-learn this game!

The input lag hurt me quite badly in a few matches though. One guy picked Marco Rodriguez (I only previously played the Japanese DC version... Khushnood Butt????!?!?) and spammed fireballs relentlessly. The slight delay meant that I ate about six of them in a row in an effort to jump them. He fires them so fast and with such little recovery time in between that your counter-measures need to be precision-timed, and any lag doesn't allow for that.

Also, the first guy I faced on ranked played as Cain and did nothing but keep-away projectiles. The XBLA ranked "community" is astonishingly predictable at times isn't it?

When I got a decent ping and played a against a similarly rusty or incompetent opponent though, it was as wonderful as ever.
