- In the only other fighting games I've played to any kind of level (SF4 and VF5) I like Chun Li and Pai/Sarah; any character recommendations that maybe fit the way I play based on that info?

- wtf does TOP-mode do?

- Can supers be chained like specials?

- Are there any rules to linking normal punches and kicks, or do I need to trial and error til I find things that work?

- what does down and both punches do? Back(or was it forward?) and both punches is taunt, right?

- what's the dealio with the both light attacks thing?

Missed these posted earlier or I would have been right on them!

- Dunno about VF much, but I think Hotaru is a good fit for a Chun player.

- More damage, auto health regen, an extra attack while you're in that part of the bar. The attack ranges from barely acceptable to completely worthless depending on character, so don't worry too much about that. Where you put TOP is up to you and dependant on play style. I like to make absurd comebacks rather than going all out, so I usually keep it at the final third of the bar.

- Supers can be comboed of any normal move you can cancel into a speical, to SF4 chain stupidity here.

- Trial and error. At least the timing isn't too hard on them!

- That's the feint. You can go from a cancellable normal move into a feint and can extend combos this way, much like Viper in SF4. Down and forward feint different moves, which one to use to extend combos depends on the character. Forget about this feature entirely if you're playing online, the timing is way to strict for the netcode.

- That's an overhead attack for every character, kinda like UOH in 3S. Usefulness may vary from character to character. Rock has some nice tricks with his though because he stays on the floor. Both weaks will also break certain specials - it ends them early and lets you extend the combo a different way. Each character only has one breakable special, and as usual mileage may vary. Freeman gets the shaft for instance, most characters can use their break to combo a super.

I can help with one of them, but the ones about combos/links/timings will be better answered by people more experienced at the game.

T.O.P. is short for "Tactical Offensive Position". You can have this happen at the start of the round, when your health is about half-gone or (more traditionally) when you're down to your last third. It activates automatically when your health bar reaches whichever portion you selected. Your character will start flashing white. Your health gradually regenerates whilst in this position and not taking damage and the damage you inflict is given a boost as well. In addition, everyone has a T.O.P. move, performed by hitting SP and SK together, which can only be done when in this state. Dong's is a spinning corkscrew kick thing, Hotaru's is a really nifty move that lets you turn around in the middle of a jump. So you can jump over the opponent as you would for a cross-up in SF, but then turn the jump around and attack them as if you'd "jumped in" to face them".

I never played either of them but I think the two boss characters both have charge inputs. They're both decently balanced, so ignore anyone who might call you cheap for using them. Kain is probably closer to a traditional SF charge character than Grant.

Thanks for that, I will check them out

I got this. Never played it before, so i had a quick blast through the story mode to get a feel for it then had a couple of games online.

I got utterly smashed by a Hokutomaru player, then someone went Butt and beat me by just standing still and throwing constant fireballs.

Just defend is excellent fun, but otherwise I had no idea what i'm even doing!

I played some more online and and still winning a lot, more than I expected.

I use grant and abuse his jumping down+K. people seems to want to stay away from me and fireball me from a safe distance, but with grant I jump straight in their faces, so most of my opponents crawl to the corner where I just juggle to death. Grant can juggle and then 3 P 3-4 time in a row, or just unleash the P super on airborne opponents for massive damage (to their weak spot).

Yeah, I lost twice to guys doing constant fireballs with Butt, though the first time it felt like input lag was stopping me jumping quickly enough because I'm not that incompetent.

Anyone who's exceptionally rusty or horrible at this please play me and we can share the learning. I need to sharpen up badly.

I noticed that Grant only weakness is when hes under pressure because he doesent have a proper move to stop jumping opponents,

but so far only one terry player gave me hard time, everybody else seems shy to come and attack me, preferring instead to stay away and fireball.

So far I won about 100 games and lost maybe 4 LOL.

Tag is in the sig if anyone wants to add me for this. I suppose I 'main' Butt but as I mentioned earlier would be up for some more variety in player matches.

This is still a fantastic game.

Chuck us your tag mate. I have no mic though.

Man if only this game had proper lobbies! It'd be really handy as it's a game lots of people don't have a massive amount of knowledge on.

If anyone wants to get some games in with me I'll try and show you as much as I can about the game. I'm by no means an expert but I do know a few things with most characters. My gamertag is Willei.

Oh and sorry once again to Preacher for continually failing to find my headset in time to talk to you. We had a couple of amazing games randomly in ranked last night!

Hey Willei, thanks for the tips the other day, you were right about Hotaru too - me likes!

Am away most of the weekend so won't be about for Live VS, however I did manage to get NeoGeoDS working with Garou last night for portable practice sessions!! Aaaah. :)

No worries

Wednesday night's session was truly epic - by the end, I felt like I'd been playing the game for months. Apologies for exclusively using Jenet, but I haven't used anyone else since picking it up, and I wouldn't want to without knowing what's brake-able and what isn't. Choosing Tizoc mid-way was totally an accident, if you were wondering. :)

Hehe, I put the fact that I beat Preach in a ranked game down to lag, as he subsequently tore me a new one with his B. Jenet in three straight matches. I don't think I even took a round off him!

Nah, it wasn't lag, just my first encounter with Kain! Rather him than Grant, though - that guy really is a monster.

I had some great fun with Preach last night. I had no idea what I was doing outside of the basic moves and supers, but the game is so fast and aggressive you can still put up a decent fight anyway  Hopefully some kind of online community sticks around this.

And yes, his B.Jenet in a corner is fucking scary

Ach, what's the betting the rest of the characters are similarly handy in that situation? I'll be screwed once you're all upto speed. But yeah, great games as per usual :-)

Just bought this, liking it so far. Never really played a SNK fighter before. Whose a recommended character for a novice?

Get into practice and do each of their moves. You quickly decide on one you favour.

I'm finding Survival fucking HARD.

I need to try it again now I've settled on Jenet. My first attempt with Rock fell woefully short of the mark.

EDIT: Just got seven straight victories in Survival, how many short is that of clearing it completely? Dead or Alive's survival mode is very similar, but with less emphasis on status-altering effects. Anyway, I'm assuming this is an arcade port, so how come survival mode's been included? Hell, it wasn't in the arcade version, was it? Sweet, if so.

It's 14 or 15, I can't remember. It took me a few goes the get into the swing of it, then I got both the acheivements on the same go. You have to fight Grant then Kain at the end. I think the survival mode and the ability to change the TOP size were in the AES version, neither were present in the MVS one.

I've got the seven in a row achievement but getting anywhere beyond that sees the CPU seemingly say "ah you've input that have you? Well suck the fuck on THIS" and murdering me. I know I am still at a relatively basic level though so will have to keep at it I suppose.
