GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

A little bit crummy that it doesn't apply to owners of the physical version of Rare Replay (population: me). I'm happy enough having it through Gamepass, but if, say, we have licensing issues with it again in future it would be nicer to have an 'owned' digital copy that's less likely to just disappear from my library.

So strange. I hoped they'd just release the remaster on Xbox and Switch. Happy to play it on the go (wee crunchy blasts of the KF7 Soviet through Bunker 2 doors' thick windows) but improved resolution and, more importantly, framerate, would have been very welcome.

Well, the framerate and resolution is confirmed as better (4k and 60fps). It just won't have the newer models and textures from the dead XBLA remastered version.

Here is the article, containing new screenshots. https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2022/09/13/james-bond-returns-goldeneye-007-on-game-pass/

Yeah. You can see what the remaster looked like, compared to the "new" xbox version

[disappointing image comparison removed out of respect for the Queen]

Fuck! What the fuck. This isn't any fucking good. "Look at what we nearly finished making ages ago, looks good doesn't it? Now take this reheated plate of polygonal sick and fuck off." Fuck!

I very much doubt that they'd pull it from accounts that already had it in their library.

I don't understand why Microsoft would even bother with such a compromised version of the game. Even if the compromise meant that the enhanced version was released on Switch as well then that's better than what's happening here. No online and no PC version? Just walk away.

Well, at another guess, I suspect this was supposed to be part of the original "Rare Replay" package, but was removed for licensing reasons. It would make it slightly more palatable if it was released at the time, but after all this wait, its a bit shitty.

It was, AFAIK. Rare produced a behind the scenes documentary for it.

That's what I mean; Gamepass games that get unlicensed disappear from your library, so I'd like a copy of the game for my actual account, which I'd get if I had a digital copy of Rare Replay — but I don't, I have a physical copy of Rare Replay, so I don't get Goldeneye added to my account.

It’s better than nothing, surely?

I've never played the original, single player. Only very occasionally 4 player coop, huddled around a friend's N64 at university. I guess my eyesight was better back then, 4 player local MK8 on a 55" screen is still a bit too small for me, these days. I was a total PC plum at the time. A friend was playing Mario 64 and I was like "why the hell are you paying for this? I downloaded the rom for free". Of course, I never appreciated Nintendo stuff back then and didn't play it, despite having free access to it. Young people are stupid.

Anyway, 25 years later I get to see what all the fuss was about :)

Is it? Given all the rights issues and legal wranglings it seem to me at least they were only ever going to get one shot at giving Goldeneye a modern release and we've ended up with two versions of the game which are both compromised compared to what fans wanted. I doubt MS and Nintendo are ever going to sit around a table again and seriously discuss releasing Goldeneye.

Maybe there'll be an option to buy it separately. I have a physical copy of Rare Replay and I paid £5 for the digital version as well, just as it was so cheap.

(Yes, I was being lazy.)

That's always the case with Game Pass 1st party stuff, right? Unless this is some effective perk of having a sub.

Possibly not, from what they are saying this appears to be an addition to Rare Replay, which is on GP already. So it's not a standalone game, it's just an addition to something that already exist from an MS ecosystem point of view.

Also as has been pointed out upthread Rare Replay is often sold a a fiver so it's not like that is an issue even if all you really want is GoldenEye.

How is the Switch version compromised? It’s the same as the original.

Very concerning, if it's foundation is just an N64 port then it sounds like it might not control as well as the (excellent) perfect dark xbla release? If they can nail the control like that I couldn't care less about texture upgrades.

Goldeneye updated to Perfect Dark (64) standards, requiring the Expansion Pak. There's something I've never thought about before!
