GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

I'm happy to say again that all I ever want with these things is the game as it was then, perhaps with a few upgrades to account for limitations at the time (framerate being a big one), and made available to play on modern hardware.

By all means, though, go ahead and furnish us with a lavish, spruced up remake as well, but not instead of. Never instead of.

They could have done both in this case which is what I find annoying. Put the original on NSO and also insist that MS release the enhanced version on Switch as part of any deal. If MS and Nintendo both got something on the level of what Nightdive have done with the likes of Turok or Quake then who would have lost out?

About that...

Is it? Given all the rights issues and legal wranglings it seem to me at least they were only ever going to get one shot at giving Goldeneye a modern release and we've ended up with two versions of the game which are both compromised compared to what fans wanted. I doubt MS and Nintendo are ever going to sit around a table again and seriously discuss releasing Goldeneye.

MS and Nintendo sit around a table every other week, they are constantly in talks.

Primarily about MS putting game pass on Nintendo systems.

The key part of the sentence you've quoted is the bit about discussing Goldeneye. I think that's book closed now and won't be touched again.

The forelock-tugging about legal issues and rights being the reason it didn't get a slightly better update just rings hollow to me. We've seen stuff like Episode 1 racer get updated and its hard to believe the situation around Goldeneye is much more awkward than that. Its not like any of the companies involved went belly up and the rights were passed around.

I should stop talking now, if I say anymore about it then we'll inevitably get the "I downloaded Goldeneye yesterday and had fun, is that even allowed" or worse "the fruit of my loins played Goldeneye for the first time yesterday and had a marvelous time, they didn't didn't even notice the lower resolution" whenever it gets added to each respective service. That's always enjoyable.

It’s clearly designed to increase subs to Nintendo’s N64 expansion pack online service and nothing else - once people upgrade to get GoldenEye, they’re unlikely to switch down, and will probably forget the other one exists. That’s a decent amount of revenue for them. And of course, they wouldn’t want the Xbox version to be superior.

I can see a full remake coming out in future though, once the dust has settled. More cash for them.

Yeah. I mean, its conjecture, but I know for a fact that if the game was released on a rival platform first, Microsoft insists on exclusive content in the Xbox version of the game (its literally a submission requirement). That's why No Man's Sky had some new stuff added went the Xbox version launch, and why Spelunky 2 had better lighting and 120hz on Xbox, but not on PlayStation.

Big companies like are petty about this stuff, as they want their platform to be "perceived" as the best one available.

I think what is frustrating people is that the leaked remaster was about 95% complete and, rather than finish it off and deliver that, they’ve decided to sack it off and provide a more basic version instead with ‘nothing more’ than a res bump and 60fps framerate.

Not that there is anything fundamentally wrong with that level of refresh - but seems rather half-arsed in comparison.

Unless they start releasing some N64 controllers this is going to be uncontrollable on Switch with their daft forced controls.

I just looked and the N64 controllers appear to be in stock now on the Nintendo UK website. I just ordered one given Goldeneye is coming.

Thanks for the heads up! It was a stressful time. I didn’t have NSO online. It didn’t want to log me in on browser, then it didn’t want to let me buy it with credit card, then I tried the switch which had no charge, then I tried to link PayPal, then I bought NSO but it didn’t show up on the store where you buy the controller. It was at this point I thought they would be out of stock. But I tried to order, then Apple Pay failed, then it worked. I still expect my order to be cancelled. Good old Nintendo. A seamless experience. On the plus side, I’m excited to have all these emulated games for the first time in a while. And, hopefully, with a suitable controller too!

Playing GoldenEye with just one N64 controller? Madness, I tell you.

I found that the C buttons to move, analogue stick to look method worked well at the time. These days it really screws with my post-Halo muscle memory though.

Surely online multiplayer is just going to be like other N64 games on Switch i.e. split screen and you’re confined to one quarter of the screen

Yes. That's why the Xbox version doesn't have it, it's just a standard feature of the emulation on Switch.

Yeah that's how I played it as well. Turok started that one off and it made me a Southpaw player for life. I just can't get used to any other scheme at all. Thankfully GE offered a lot of other schemes, but a lot of later FPSes didn't. Xbox' stick swapping feature in the consoles' controller menu was a godsend for me.

Bit disappointing it’s “just” the standard version (albeit with the framerate and resolution boost), but at least it’s coming…

As I have Rare Replay (either bought it cheap or got it with Games With Gold) I’ll get it for free on the Xbox, even without Game Pass so that’s nice. And I can always emulate the XBLA remaster.
