GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

I had a very similar experience replaying Timesplitters 2 and 3 recently. More of a problem in 2, as 3 could be comfortably played as a modern game without too much sacrifice.

I still want this release though. I yearn for it.

I played GE on original hardware a few months back and I didn’t have much of a problem adapting to the controls. It plays very different compared to a modern shooter but the gameplay is tailored to the relative lack of speed and agility, with the long winded animations of injured enemies etc.

It’s like Resi4 compared to Fortnite. Both perfectly playable third person shooters on their own, but you wouldn’t want to interchange the controls.

Perfect Dark played fine on XBox with twin stick controls, wouldn’t this be the same?

Would that it were the version we were getting, but it’s not, is it? It’s ‘just’ the emulated N64 version, not the enhanced 360 port that leaked last year or so. Something about the Switch version supporting online multiplayer and the Xbox version having enhanced visuals.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’m there day one.

I tried playing goldeneye last year on an LCD screen using an OSSC on an RGB modded N64 and it was a near unplayable blurry mess

A few months later I got a 29” CRT using the same N64 and it was a completely different experience, rolled back the years and played through every level and unlocked half the cheats over a couple of weeks, had 4 controllers set up and I’d come home from work to find the kids playing goldeneye multiplayer rather than playing on the PS5

I think this will be a huge hit online when it finally comes out

Did any of you play the Wii remake at all?

I don't want to split hairs but it wasn't a remake at all, really.

What it was was an excellent game in its own right.

How good will the online be then?

if going by any of the other N64 games -

play someone in same country - not bad. But 4 players? expect some sound issues

Play someone from a different country, probably a lot of connection issues. You might get lucky against one other by 4? forget it.

I tried Mario Party 2 , in the end gave up due to the issues.

Xbox version - faithfully recreated and enhanced. Does this mean it is the Xbox 360 Arcade release?

The one that leaked and has been playable on PC for ages? Yes.

No. This is not the complete rebuild by Rare that never got released and then leaked.

But I believe this one will have high resolution assets and achievements. But no online multiplayer.

I'm still a little bit confused about this, and while it doesn't look like we're getting the unreleased remaster, this VGC article confirms dual analogue support, which is surely a massive improvement if true. I've not seen this in previous announcements so I'm slightly hesitant to take it at face value, but it does suggest that the Xbox version has at least been significantly reworked, while the NSO version is basically the N64 game but with widescreen.

And online multiplayer. Just a little thing for Goldeneye.

And online multiplayer, yes. :)

Of course, true aficionados know the best way to enjoy Goldeneye is squeezed onto the sofa with your chums. 😉

Does it do Switch 'local' multiplayer does anyone know - if you each have a switch in the same room can you play together on local wi-fi connection?

I have no friends, so not asking for me, but jsut wondering :D

Nah, the N64 emulator allows you to play multiplayer by, er, emulating the system, which acts as a wrapper for what the games can do. The online multiplayer is just the emulator tricking the game into thinking everyone is playing locally, the game doesn’t actually know or care.
