GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

Just tried this out on the Steamdeck via Gamepass, fantastic!

Every time I've tried Goldeneye on emulators, I can never get the controls to feel right. This was bang on from the off. If only Microsoft had secured online Multiplayer.

Maybe it's best to let people decide that for themselves. I was having a great time with it last night and it controlled very nicely for me on Xbox.

Whilst I’m flattered by the implied authority, I do not know what part of my post you interpreted as me forming opinions for other people.

I wonder if those expressing disappointment are playing the Switch version with the hoary control method?

Maybe try the guide Scottr linked to and see how you feel?

Playing on Xbox, it plays exactly how I imagined it would would twin sticks, which is to say brilliantly. Anyone who played the Perfect Dark 360 remaster would rightly expect this to be the case, and I can't say we've been let down at all. It's still the great game it always was, unencumbered by the vestiges of pre-Halo controls.

Was there a way to unlock the cheats without having to play through it all on the harder modes? I didn't really play the single player as a kid so had my brother unlock all the cheat modes for multiplayer. Not sure he'd be up for that these days!

I've always wondered why the default control scheme was that mad one, even in the 90's that was hard to use. I never knew anyone who didn't use the 1.2 control scheme. It's just a shame FPS games have reversed the move/look sticks since then, but it's not hard to swap the sticks in a custom mapping.

I am surprised they didn't do something bespoke with the control setup on the Switch, Sin and Punishment has a different default mapping to the other games so it's something the NSO app can do.

It's not really about you, it's a blanket statement that a lot of people seem to be absolutely determined to point out, for some reason. Your post was just the latest. I think its aged just fine. Perhaps that's because I've played it in recent years, instead of idealising a memory.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just tired of some people constantly pissing on other people's chips since this port was announced.

I quite recently replayed the game, on an RGB modded N64 into a PVM CRT using the fucking bog standard 1.1 control and it was fucking amazing all over again.

Having new versions, and play it emulated is all good as it's easier access to the game but a lot of these N64 games where tuned for the weird overly precise analog stick on it's weird controller and they do play their best on OG hardware.

This game and Perfect Dark are still absolutely classics, and I do prefer the N64 versions.

Yeah there are button codes that came out like eight years after release or something crazy like that.

I remember before then loads of letters to Nintendo mags from kids saying they were messing around with the pad and unlocked a cheat and various staff writers taking the piss.

Guess who ended up with egg on their faces in the end eh?

I'm cool and rich so I have the NSO N64 controller (many of the N64 games feel unplayable to me without it). However, am I better off just going with the pro controller and using a more modern control set-up?

I think we both know the answer to this question. ;)

Unless you are really good with the Turok style 1.2 'Solitaire' method... but even then, movement on C-buttons rather than a stick is still quite hard to adjust to, not to mention years and years of 'left stick does movement' conditioning.

You should surely give your brother the option though!? A weekend spent on GoldenEye? What's not to like?

Thanks for this.

You're right. I think we both do know the answer but I was hoping people would say that if I played it a lot back in the day I should stick with the N64 controller. But seeing as I've not played it at all this century I doubt the muscle memory will kick in the way I hope.

It's on Gamepass for the PC? Nice! I assumed along with all the other games in the rare replay that it wouldn't be available.

The n64 one with standard controls is awful. You can make it better by changing the buttons system wide (in the switch menu) and then choosing 1.2 control scheme but otherwise you are best of using a N64 pad if you have one.

Goldeneye does feel a bit wrong on the Xbox controller, so to preserve the original experience of playing in the nineties, I've commissioned someone to modify an authentic N64 pad to work through USB:

Can't wait to work on beating 2:05 on Facility with this bad boy!

Doesn't really count unless you use one of these.

This is great but the pro controller isn’t ideal

How often do the N64 switch controllers come up for sale on the Nintendo website?

Or is that a silly question?

They've been restocked 2-3 times since launch. About six months between restocks, generally. The Nintendo UK store was screwing up saved addresses as well when I bought mine, was lucky that they turned up at all.

Sorry, not directly on PC. I played via cloud streaming.

This is still great! I’m currently playing on Xbox with default controls and it’s terrific. I will fire up the N64 Switch controller as I have one at some point but I thought I’d start with something my brain could handle. I’d thought everyone who said it would seem dated and bad would be correct but it’s just like I remember. (I’ve only played the first two levels so far, haven’t found 006 yet, maybe I need to be more patient before blowing the tanks).

Goldeneye had quite a generous auto-aim, looking up and down was barely required… at least during shooty shooty sections.

It would also automatically look up and down when required.

most of us played with 1.2 controls but without looking up and down (which was digital anyway on the c buttons)

quick shot on Xbox at lunch time... the default controls there are very nicely done.  It also has widescreen too.

Framerate on X is the same as it is on switch.  There's some framedrops at bits.

Arguably - The switch is Goldeneye raw.  Xbox has some QoL improvements for modern systems, but likely makes the game much much easier than it was in the day.  Kind of like how RE4 on Wii was amazing - but much easier than the Gamecube version.

Hmmm, Xbox, or Switch (with official N64 controller…. ) I’ve never really ever played it, except one death match once in about 2002

I guess I’ve got to give the original way to play a go first right?

I'm finding manual aiming with the switch really quite difficult... the N64 had an amazing stick that was quite easy to move gradually and hold in place.  It's much harder with modern style sticks.  The default Xbox controls have done away with it completely and uses aim purely as 'iron site'
