Not sure what to make of the new Gang Starr. For me it barely qualifies as an entry into their discography, as nice as it is. There’s so little Guru, and what there is has been stretched to breaking point. It just feels like their usual working routine couldn’t be recreated, so maybe pop a few of these found bars on another project, or just don’t bother?

The beats are great and straddle a good mix of being contemporary and still golden era rather than just some 90s boom bap rehash job. The seemingly never ending parade of guests help stop the production getting too samey too which is good, and the dearth of useable Guru bits means it falls into the rap album sweet spot of just over a half hour in run time which always goes down well with me. Q-Tip’s verse is outstanding too. Genuinely brilliant.

The Tribe album set the standard for revival projects and they created a masterpiece. This falls way short of that benchmark for me.

I just thought it was hilarious. Here’s Guru chatting about some sociopathic hitman with ice in his veins who’s armed to the teeth and Q-Tip rocks up with the goofiest set of lines you’ve ever heard.

Q-tips chorus about potatoes and lawnmowers? I thought it was awful!

Me too, I was so annoyed he didn’t actually do a proper verse.

The album is fine I guess, nothing really stands out and  I would struggle to put it into my top ten hip hop albums of the year.

Less of the corny and more of the Uncommon Valor please thanks

If all of his previous albums are anything to go by, it will be a mixture of both kinds. To wit, the first video for Legends Never Die:

I have faith he'll deliver again

A quick reminder in case you missed it - the annual RLLMUK music poll is now pinned at the top of the music forum - it's open until 31 December, and it would be brilliant to have your votes! You don’t have to have 10 albums - your vote counts, even if you have just one album you’ve liked this year :)

Not really feeling that new Czarface album.

Not just me then? It's like they wanted to see if they could try to go a bit more into RTJ territory or something.

Is anyone listening to this? From the cover, it looks completely awful.

Its absolutely brilliant

Bobby J is a great rhymer and the beats are brilliant as well. For a taster, listen to the track Walter White, which is pure fire.
