OK, yeah, this actually is real nice. I think the interview I saw with him dissing Daytona 500 was from last year, and he seemed unappreciative of how hip-hop extended his legacy, but watching this conversation you can clearly see he’s truly grown to appreciate it. Good stuff.

Sound Ancestors is great. I feel like it's going to take a few listens for it to surrender its mysteries to me fully though. It would be interesting to know what exactly Kieran Hebdan's involvement was with it, but even if it was simply wading through a mass of material and sequencing it pleasingly then he's done a worthy job. Giving each track some air and there being no stand-up segues or it being a continuous collage definitely makes this feel more like a Madlib artist album – more so than anything else he's done. Maybe that's it, his previous albums get almost disregarded a little as beat tapes, so if the goal was to create a statement as a musician to be evaluated on its own terms then it's a huge success. I sometimes regard KH as a more interesting curator than as an artist, so in this role he's amazing with some A+ material to work with. 

 

I definitely get the Donuts similarities, but it's nowhere near as spontaneous as that – or at least Donuts sounded spontaneous, I very much doubt it was as much of a sketchbook as it appeared. This feels laboured over and polished and considered. Again, maybe that's yer man Fourtet's influence. For better or worse he's a perfectionist. Saying that, if you were to give a space alien an LP to sum up an artist though, this and Donuts are absolutely what I would pick to describe them.

Anybody else been watching the BBC’s Hip Hop: The Songs that Shook America series? Easily some of the best hip hop docs I’ve ever seen, they seem to have interviewed everyone. They’re all fab, but the Queens Vs Bronx and Queen Latifa episodes are particularly good I thought.

I've only managed to watch the Run DMC one which was great, I need to catch the rest when I'm less manic with work.

Yeah, they are all great, even the ones I’d thought I’d have no real interest in like Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar have been spot on.

Madlib’s Donuts?

I was going to post about this last week sometime and then forgot. In fact, I was going to post and say something like 'I know Cal will already be on this'. It is definitely Madlibs Donuts. It's EXACTLY what I thought after the first few listens through. It's a timeless piece and it is absolutely designed to be listened to in its entirety.

I like the focus on his early life - its an hour in before they get to the ready to die release.  Lots of new footage as well.

Watched it last night and enjoyed it but could have done with some more Biggie just ...rappin’. I mean, he was pretty good at it.

Madlib’s Donuts?

I've been hammering this lately, and I agree re: Madlib's Donuts. I also got in touch with a friend who introduced me to Madlib (amongst others) to rip this B-side for me, which he did for me back when minidisc was a thing :wub:
