Sega Saturn for Beginners

It's a shame that there was so much stuff that never migrated to other countries. Anyone who has been to Japan will agree with me, the Saturn had literally HUNDREDS of great-looking RPGs. If you go to any 2nd hand games store with a decent retro section in Japan, you will see shelf-upon-shelf of side-on Saturn gamecases, as much as a current PS3 section in an average Gamestation today in terms of space. Half of them are RPGs and of those, Mystaria, Shining Wisdom, Shining in the Holy Ark, Shining Force Part 1 and Panzer Dragoon Saga made it to the UK, as well as perhaps 1 or two others, like Dark Saviour.

I'm not just on about RPGs though, I mean everything. There were SO MANY games it's unbelievable. There were literally HUNDREDS more. Perhaps even 4 times the total number of games ever released in the UK, and that was only at my local places.

That you can play without understanding Japanese? Probably only Radiant Silvergun on the 'really great' scale, there's plenty of other shooters but none with the variety and RPG-ness of RS.

The language barrier isn't too great. I was under the impression there was a wealth of games from all genres for the Saturn that never came out back home.

As I said before, there are - but few people know about them. Give Cyberbots a go if you find that, for starters.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally tracked down a cheap Model 2, and it's the 32-pin IC model as well - ripe for modding!

I'm going to go with mmmonkey's bit-of-veroboard with 50/60Hz switch, mod chip and region switch all wired in. Means I get to make most of my mistakes without having to do anything to the Saturn's mainboard.

I got my hands on Guardian Heroes for the first time today - given the praise heaped on it I was disappointed, in all honesty.

I only played for a short while but it seems to lack the level of depth I was expecting... am I missing some vital gameplay knowledge that could unlock the game?

Dude, GH is an excellent game but you have to have two players to get the most enjoyment out of it.

It's highly replayable with a lot of different endings and screen-filling bosses.

Having a huge, invulnerable skeleton warrior AI as back up is amazing.

He is incredibly useful, especially when you send him in to pull off his screen clearing attacks.

The more time you put into it, the more you'll enjoy it. Seriously.

Play through the game once and then check out the wiki page for more info on the game:

The Saturn is probably my favourite console after the Megadrive. It's one of the few collections I will only sell when I become so desperate for money that I have to. It's not a complete collection, it's not a mint collection, but 99% of it is pure quality and I'm very very proud of it.

I honestly think complete collections are a waste of money, as there's so much tat out there. Do you really want to own Doom on Saturn? Really? Because that's part of the 1% of mine that's dire, I'm loathe to throw it out and I know it's worthless. Still, here's to the Saturn! Fucking awesome console.

I agree, the Saturn was a complete joy. It's probably my favourite console for pure gaming and that boot up sequence is so sexy :(

I bought a lot of Saturn games recently, but ironically the game that I play 90% of the time is Daytona USA.

Good GRIEF, it's the best game ever, isn't it? ONE car, THREE tracks, NO TIME ATTACK - you would think this was the shittest piece of shit ever. But it's not. It's not even slightly shit. I've already spent countless hours this past month perfecting Expert and getting the best possible times on each of the tracks - it's light on features but in fact it's one of the purest gaming experiences ever.

The only bad thing about it is the frame rate, which is awful. I'm thinking about getting a Dreamcast just to get the DC version of Daytona...

I tried this in trading, but no one took me up on it. Might get some love here.

I have a PAL saturn, with steering wheel, controllers, PSU, Scart cable, etc, and about 7 - 1- games, nothing spectacular.

Never really got on with it and i have had it for some time.

I am in kent, whoever wants to collect gets it.

Cannot be arsed to post, because of the wheel.

GO !

DC Daytona doesn't control quite as well, but it does have every option you can think of - more tracks, normal/reverse, 40 cars on every track if you like, a championship mode, constant 60fps etc.

Jeez I'd be well up for that mate. Didn't spot that in trading :P I'm in Gravesend.

Depressing that there's never been a spot-on home conversion of Daytona, isn't it?

Yep, the first Saturn version got the control right (particularly impressive for a d-pad) but looked ropey, the other versions had much better presentation but messed up the handling.

Therefore we need that Sumo Digital XBLA/PSN port of the original that they keep refusing to confirm exists :P
