You should really watch the first series before the prequel though. There's a "previously on" which spoils huge amounts of the first series.

Ditto. You really, really, really shouldn't watch GOTA first.

Argh I just saw. Fuffs! They should have fucking said something, the massive tools :quote:

You wouldn't think a prequel would spoil the follow up like that, the twats!

Oh well. :(

Erm, pretty much every prequel does. If you've not seen the Empire Strikes Back yet, spoiler ruined if you watch the prequels.

I agree with the others, watch the first series. It'll add to the prequel as it's focusing on many of the the supporting roles from that.

Can I just say after watching Blood and Sand. followed by Gods of the Arena, followed by a repeat viewing of Blood and Sand the following statement: Fucking hell if this isn't the most amazing thing entertainment wise on telly for years. Yes it's hammy, yes it's occasionally a bit shit ( :hmm: at first two episodes) but by Jupiters Cock when it's good, i.e. most of the time, it's fucking brilliant. It perfectly captures that vague "buzz" you get when you watch a really cool bit of an action film, over and over again.

Lord knows how they are going to capture Andy Whitfields performance again, as he is simply cool as fuck.

Crixus even seemed to learn how to act in the interim between the two series, and Peter Mensah is always cool as fuck. And 51. I'd have never guessed that.

It's a show that really should be shit, but is in fact awesome. The cast have really delivered (crying shame about Whitfield) and the writing has enough wit and drive to make you care and get involved.

Although after last nights show I think I may need to replace my love of 'by Jupiters cock' with 'rewarded with wine and cunt'. There really isn't another show that could get away with that.

Most prequels made after the fact assume you have some knowledge going in, or are completely seperate stories and therefore don't just spoil the shit out of everything (Star Wars prequels being the obvious 'please stop fucking about with it Goerge Lucas' exceptions). To have a 'previously' and then show the entire end for the first series in a prequel set years before was stupid!

I've just finished watching the prequel Gods of the Arena and actually enjoyed it more than the first series.

Of course it wouldn't have been as good had i not seen the first series, I knew where the main charaters were going to end up plot wise but thought the story was way more interesting, the blood FX alot more convincing (tho they got better nearer the end of the first series) and explaining where the characters came from made added excellent retrospective depth. Some of these american series can be a little long winded, stringing out a premise or plot for its own sake and the momentum of the overall story arch can get lost but with six episodes to play with the story was zingy and punchy.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but i was under the impression we were going to see Spartacus appear in the series despite him over coming cancer yet he wasn't, anyone know why and if they plan to do any more?

I blasted through all 6 eps of Gods of the Arena yesterday, bloody great. Makes me want to revisit the first season again, must hunt it down on DVD.

UK release isn't out until May. And October for Gods of the Arena.

He developed Lymphoma before they started filming the second series, so it was put on hold and they made the prequel instead. Once he was given the all clear, they started filming the second series and, 2 episodes in, his cancer came back, so he had to step down from the role. A new actor has taken the role and they will continue with him as if nothing happened.

Gotta feel bad for the poor guy :(

Only one episode of Gods left too go (watching on Sky), nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. For something that was an emergency filler series it's been awesome. Best ever prequel? By Jupiters cock, six episodes just isn't anywhere near enough.

Watched the last episode on Sky last night, bloody loved all of it. During the end credits I was contemplating being a dirty pirate to get the first series asap (I gave up on the first series after half an episode because I'm an idiot) but then Sky announced they were showing Blood and Sand from next week :D

Just finished watching it! Wow, what an amazing show. I was literally on the edge of my seat during the final battle and got goosebumps at the end. Epic does not begin to describe it.

One thing I didn't understand (I may have missed it) - why does Crixus have such beef with Gannicus. Is that ever explained? The whole series he had a hard-on for fighting Gannicus and I never really understood why.

Brilliant though. I'll be buying the first series and this one as soon as they're released on bluray ^_^
