I think the 2nd episode wasn't as good as expected for me because they introduced human characters and the feeling of isolation that they'd set up with the final scene of episode 1 seemed to just disappear. Human characters have to be characterised too and there were the old cliches in evidence with the proverbial redneck and the oriental and the sentimental woman and the pragmatic leader type. It's probably impossible to create something like this where you have to introduce characters quickly without resorting to type.

I still enjoyed it though and I'm going to watch the entire series.

Just watched episode3. Slowly starting to get interested in the characters now. Like Lost each one has their own little 'thing'. It just needs more surprises though, I could visualize the final 'shot' of the episode a mile off. It's quite interesting how fast they are introducing new characters, thankfully they have all been ok so far. Surely it's only a matter of time until we get 'funny fat person', 'scientist guy', 'handicapped person' and 'cool muslim'?

Anyway, enjoying it for what it is at the moment. Hopefully the more popular it is the bigger risks the writers will take.

Probably preaching to the converted here as you may have read them but in the comics that feeling of isolation is extended further as Rick only meets Glenn in the City and they both escape together, there is no one else. I actually really liked that section in the comics as Rick and Glenn build up a bit of a relationship. They also both head back to the city together looking for supplies afterwards.

It's what made the inclusion of these characters so odd. It really did feel that it was badly forced only to fill in any type the comics may have missed out on (and to give us the cocky biker escapes and goes looking for revenge plotline for a later date). Too many characters also completely destroy's the feeling of despair and isolation. I think it's why all the best zombie films only have a handful of protagonists.

There was a lot of good in the first episode though so still really hopeful.

Well if it follows the comics, it's going to take some very major risks...

I had a feeling that episode three would start like that, though I didn't think it'd turn into a major plot point. The pre-credits sequence was definitely the best part, though. Very unsettling, I thought.

Three episodes in and

nobody's died. There's got to be a bloodbath soon. We've got three unlikeable characters just asking for it, it seems.

Speaking of which,

where did the one-handed biker go? He can't have got out the door as it was still locked, and that seemed to be the only exit down, so hmm...

I watched episode 3 expecting some kind of car crash, but all I got was another good episode that focused on the survivors and their group dynamics.

As I've said, the zombies take a backseat after a while, and though the situations get more and more tense and horrible, you're more likely to see a group of humans bickering amongst themselves with the odd zombie cameo thrown in, rather than full-on zombie mayhem every episode.

But, when they do the action bits (in the comic) they're always epic and awesome and horrible and 'game-changing'. Just don't go expecting Egg to strap two chainsaws to a snooker cue and go kill crazy for the sake of it.

It does a good job of defying both zombie and general story convention, but it has to set up those pieces first before it starts knocking them down...

(This entire thread is full of ominous mentions of 'where the comic goes'. It must be really annoying for those who aren't interested in the comic, so sorry. But hopefully it demonstrates that the series goes somewhere more interesting than you might expect)

I think it was Ep 2 that the comments were directed at? I haven't seen Ep 3 yet as I am following it on FX.

I thought ep3 was possibly the best yet personally.

I knew Francis (as i liek to call the biker dude they left ont he roof) would come back to haunt them. Even tho it was mostly just setting up the characters and all it just really feel like its building towards something epic already.

so far tis been fantastic. Also glad to see im not the only one referring to Rick as 'Egg'

Ok, it's taken 3 episodes, but now I'm into this.

The bits where

Andrew Lincoln's going to meet his family again, though he doesn't know it, and the bit where Shane decked the wife-beater

both gave me chills.

I'm most interested in where they can go with the wife:

It seems like she probably left him while he was in hospital, and he's just forgotten the conversation, which he'll no doubt remember at an opportune moment later. However, as a mother she can't die, and we can't accept her pretending that she wasn't cheating with his best friend (likely well before the zombiepocalypse). In a series where I'm expecting many zombie standards, I don't know quite where they'll go with it, which is great.

Talky one this week. Still good enough though, thought the

opening scene with the twat on the rooftop talking to himself and generally spinning out was cool. Can't believe I was right about him cutting off his hand, I was semi-expecting it to be a partially-devoured zombie Merle cuffed to the pipe the way his brother was carrying on. Fingers crossed for a couple of cast members to get eaten next week!

Same here.

While enjoying this so far, I've had reservations. Namely, that it seemed like a zombie greatest hits compilation. But I really liked this week's as the characters are starting to get fleshed (LOL! etc.) out.

The whole thing was very tense from start to finish, despite there being hardly a zombie in sight.

Handing out the stash of guns amongst that group isn't going to end well, is it?

Im enjoying it but I think was expecting more after reading everyone going completely mental over it. It's just a quite good TV show!

Can someone who has read the comics help me figure out where I need to carry on from? I've forgotten what volume i'm on:

Last one I read, Egg wound up in trouble at some village where the crazed guy who runs it keeps his zombie daughter chained up and makes zombies fight people for kicks. He might also have cut Egg's hand off.

Issue 32 would be about right.

I can't see him loosing his hand at Woodbury in the TV show. it means he walks around with an extra long arm for the entire second season or they take the time to CGI out his hand in every single frame he's in.

Ah, The Governor :D he appears in issue 27, so it sounds like you have read the 5th volume, issues 25 to 30 most recently. Can't remember when the hand cutting happens though, may be volume 6

Nah they'll do it, it's way too iconic not to.

I'm no expert, but wouldn't it be easier to cut the chain on the handcuffs? If the hacksaw will go through bone it'll go through quarter of an inch of metal, won't it?

On an unrelated note, the guy that plays Shane is good, just the right mix of fatherly devotion, thuggish brutality and green eyed envy.

re: Rudi

I still refuse to believe that half a link on those handcuffs wouldn't be quicker than starting to cut your hand off, going into shock, gaining consciousness again, and then dying from blood loss.

Although it would have been a nice touch if they'd shown a close-up of a nick in the cuffs (and the pipe) where he'd been trying to cut.

man i hated the wife beater bit. it was so cliché. how many times have i seen that exact setup before? i feel bad for that actor. his character exists purely to set up one of the better looking leads to beat on him so the audience can cheer

Exactly. I admit, at first I was, "Well done! He deserves a punch (or two) in the face!" But then the punches kept coming, and coming, and coming... until he'd smashed his face in about 50 times. No way did he walk away from that a hero. He walked away a fucking psycho.
