re: Rudi

I still refuse to believe that half a link on those handcuffs wouldn't be quicker than starting to cut your hand off, going into shock, gaining consciousness again, and then dying from blood loss.

Although it would have been a nice touch if they'd shown a close-up of a nick in the cuffs (and the pipe) where he'd been trying to cut.

We're overlooking the fact that he's a fucking idiot though.

man i hated the wife beater bit. it was so cliché. how many times have i seen that exact setup before? i feel bad for that actor. his character exists purely to set up one of the better looking leads to beat on him so the audience can cheer

Yeah, I loved the bit where Shane flipped out and half beat the guy to death unnecessarily while everyone screamed at him to stop.

Go Shane!

I felt Episode 3 was the most disappointing so far. I kept watching purely because I'm a zombie fan.

This show lacks decent female characters. It is overly male dominated with female characters relegated to stereotypical roles. The love-triangle story is pure soap opera. Nothing surprises me. Many of the characters seem unrealistic. The fact they stand around and watch whilst others argue gets on my nerves. The obsession over guns is too American for me. I don't know where the story is going in a bad way. Not enough zombie action in Episode 3! I don't like any of the male characters yet.

I was also disappointed that the guy on the roof

escaped. The guilt the others felt over leaving him would be more powerful if they'd never gone back.

This series needs to get a lot more raw, brutal and unpredictable to hold my interest. I'm tempted to read the comics to see how it compares.

I know I'm a harsh critic for this kind of show! :) I still believe. It hasn't done anything extremely bad yet. It still has the ingredients to be amazing but 3 episodes in and the gas isn't cooking. How long do I have to wait for things to pick up?

I'm really enjoying this, it's the best new drama to come since Treme.

The whole 'adventure' part of it is what appeals the most. It feels like a childrens book with a richly drawn setting and a good mix of characters. And I like the zombies. Scary (but not too scary), realistic, brilliant make-up effects. And I like all the stuff about how chopping off the head isn't enough - you need to take out the brain.

Oh and I was one of the few people going 'fuck yeah' when the wife-beater was beat up, but that's because I'm a pretty vengeful guy.

Ep.3 was a good bit better than 2. Some ok characterisation and a bit of insight into the hierachy of the group. It's completely missed the tone of the comics though.

Its far too Losty for me. There are just too many unnecessary stereotypes there as filler and they seem to bring nothing to the group. The main group are getting better though. Felt a bit for Shane and I was in the "fuck yeah" camp when he beat upon the wife beater and Lincoln is great as Rick.

Overall very enjoyable but it needs to lose the glammy, trying to please everyone theme and get a bit bleaker. Killing off a few on the periphery would be a good start.

I actually think/ hope that these first few episodes are pulling the wool over our eyes a little bit in terms of who the main characters are and the amount of deaths we're likely to see in the course of the show. If it was me, I'd have maybe one or two deaths (of minor characters) between now and the end of this six episode run and make the final scene of this season-

MAJOR SPOILERS UNLESS YOU'VE READ THE COMIC

Carl shooting Shane and then a nice close up of Shane so that you can know he's dead. The end.

That'd mess with everyone's head, I think, and leave them in no doubt that the gloves are off from now on.

Only just got through episode 3. I liked the way it built up to the end, it seemed quite languid then all of a sudden there were a couple of situations that could have gone either way.

Re: The guy on the roof: Re: hacksawing stuff

Yes, why cut your hand off? You're chained to what looked like 12mm all-thread, which you can through in about a minute. The handcuffs would be hardened steel, they'd blunt the hacksaw in seconds (done it myself more than once, not with handcuffs though, with hardened steel.). Hell, the pipe he was leaning against was a wrapped pipe which means it was probably heating/venting and therefore wouldn't be that thick either. Obviously it's all for plot, but it did seem a bit extreme.

Seems likely. They'll have to cram a lot into the next three eps ( or miss a lot out ) if the last shot of the season is going to be;

Of them arriving at the prison

I thought the 3rd episode was the best so far. I'm well aware the characters are being painted with broad strokes, but it's so enjoyable watching them that I don't care. The zombies are, if anything, a bonus.

Yep, totally agree. Third ep was the best so far, easily.

Episode 4 just finished here, another corker! Spoilery comments for Episode 4 'Vatos' follow, don't read unless you watch it!

Some may have thought it time wasting but I loved the stuff with Glenn getting kidnapped, especially the badass attempt to get him back

Reedus' character is becoming more and more likable.

Totally thrown by the two twists, first of all what the vatos had in the back.

Second of all, the fucking ending. Right before it happened, I was still expecting Merle. Then, what an awesome explosion of violence! Best of all, red shirts and annoying faces getting taken out! People getting bitten! I was worried they were going to squeeze ages out of some of these characters who seemed one note, but nope! Thank god!

The last line was unnecessary though. It was really a case of underlining something that didn't need it.

Totally agree. You're right about the last line, too. It could have just shown that character in close-up with no dialogue and allowed the viewers to make that (small) leap.

The campfire scene was incredibly tense, mostly because it was so quiet I was expecting a sudden gunshot or something and Merle would be there. Nice way to subvert expectations.

Episode 4:

with the gang, I thought it was good but was disappointed in how everyone turned out to be all altruistic afterwards. Would've been better if the leader genuinely was a hard as fuck gang leader. With the ending, it just came out of nowhere. I was expecting it to involve Merle (although maybe Merle lured them there?). It'll be interesting to see if this forces them to relocate, which I assume it will. All round awesome episode, if only for MASSIVE ZOMBIE ATTACK.

And yes, I agree about the last line thing.

i'm losing patience with this now. it's like i have to watch 40 minutes of talking for a 5 minute zombie scene. the ratio of talking:zombies is completely out of sync. i realise the budget probably doesn't stretch far enough to maintain the kind of pace seen in the first 2 episodes, but those episodes are quite misleading as they do not represent a trend in the show so far.

also the gang stuff was weak as fuck. really corny and lame; a complete non sequitur i had no interest in and a waste of 10-15 minutes that could have been spent running around atlanta avoiding zombies

meh

There are more female 'main' characters yet to arrive, I've no idea when or how they'll be introduced though. Probably won't be this series. That's not a spoiler is it?

It's not really about the zombies very much. It's more about the group dynamics etc. With the added twist of zombies. It might not be for you.

I liked 4.

I like the idea of a pizza delivery guy being better equipped than most in surviving a zombie apocalypse because of his knowledge of sidestreets. I'd be fucked in similar situation without google maps. I liked Merle's brother's hair-thin restraint & Rick's refusal to give up the guns. Interesting stuff but still not great tv...yet

I agree with that, it made me feel quite confused. I'm not sure, even in a complete panic, how you'd decide that course of action. In addition, how did he get off the roof?

I enjoyed it and the scene where the main guy (I'm terrible with names) is reunited with his family. I was expecting

his mate to go batshit mental and fight him but he just seemed really apologetic about leaving him in a hospital... I'm sure that scenario will change but it was odd

I enjoyed episode 3 though and was quite glad it wasn't about zombies attacking people.

I'm really enjoying it and the pacing seems really good - I've not really watched a US series since Twin Peaks came out.

That final scene:

Hands down Merle's got something to do with all those zombies attacking the camp, don't you think?

I don't know

Merle is tough but he's not that smart. Remember he was on the roof just shooting like an arsehole before. He doesn't seem the type to be able to wrangle a huge pile of zombies. Plus, for all he knew, his brother was still at the camp. The camp survivors were all having a pow-wow with no guards around the fire. Also, Glen drove a car, flashing lights and blasting the alarm all the way there earlier.
