Well I dunno wtf happened but I've reinstalled CoP on my new hard disc today and suddenly Atmosfear is running fine! Bizarre, but amazing! :D Yay more Stalking!!

Edit - actually a quick question, what's the difference between the normal anomaly beeps and using the anomaly detector?

Well I worked it out meself :) finding artifacts I see!

Just had a quick half hour and started my game properly. Intro video was amazing, only because the subtitles were so completely wrong!

Amazing how I'm playing like a bit more of a cunt this time, simply because I'm supposed to be some military guy.. There are two Stalkers near a crater full of anomalies right near the start, you're supposed to go help the one who gets hurt, instead I kept the medikit, and killed them both to nab their equipment

Then I suffered what I can only describe as a 'lolstalker' moment: I'd been snooping round an old ship, as the detector I had was pinging me towards it. Found a funky artifact a the ship's controls - wicked! Left the boat, some random Stalker asks me for it. I say I haven't even seen it. He says 'see ya' and leans against the wall. I start to walk off, two guys jump out. They all open fire. I die. :( thank god for auto saves!

Things like that, though typically STALKER, will hurt it on console/massmarket, all they had to do was give me a bit more of a chance and it wouldve been ok. Ho hum.

I'm liking it a lot though, the subtle changes are great.. pressing numbers for convo options, being able to unload weapons from guns and the better inventory in general are all awesome additions.

Had to stop just as I got to the first Stalker camp thing, so many people to talk to! A man that does upgrades? NEAT! :D can't wait to play some more!

That sounds pretty much exactly how i started with cop, i went from LOLWUT at the intro to jesus christ this looks ugly to 5 o'clock shadow the next morning and omgicantstopplaying

All in all i think the missions are definitely more varied and fun compared to soc. I genuinely cant wait for you to do a certain bloodsucker mission to see your reaction

I was playing complete 2009 today, and had a fantastic moment where i was hunting bandits, only to wind up being chased around garbage by a pack of wild dogs. There were far too many to take on so i ran, and ran right through a whirlygig anomaly by accident, i turned around to see about 9 dogs all spinning around in the air caught in the anomaly! Then it exploded and all i saw was a dog being launched literally across the horizon, i laughed so hard

http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-way-of-the-wolf

Introduction:

From the creator of Call of Pripyat: Redux comes the first total conversion modification for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, bringing the Southern Zone into the modern Call of Pripyat engine!

Setting, Storyline, Synopsis:

Way of the Wolf will be set prior to the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, prior to the Great Emission that radically changed the look of the Zone. The Southern Zone will form the basis of the mod, with the player taking the role of everyone's favourite rookie-trainer, Wolf, in his slightly younger days. Familiar locations such as the Cordon, Agroprom Research Institute and Rostok are making a triumphant return!

Corrupt Ukrainian army officials trade with illegal Stalkers at the border of the Zone of Alienation, selling surplus military supplies under the table to make cash on the side. Largely tolerant of Stalkers, regular soldiers will not fire upon them unless provoked. The same cannot be said for Spetsnaz units sent deeper into the Zone.

The fanatical Monolith faction have very recently left for the Zone's centre, and sightings have been seen of roving members returning from beyond the Barrier highly agitated and hostile.

The Clear Sky faction is yet to reveal itself to the world - its home in the Great Swamps is as yet inaccessible thanks to large amounts of anomalous activity.

Way of the Wolf will be a largely free-play gameplay experience, utilising the side-mission system of Call of Pripyat to great effect. Other benefits of the new engine include:

•Anomaly Zones and detectors for artifact hunting.

•Weapon and suit upgrading.

•Improved NPC and AI behaviour.

•Improved graphics and performance.

•Much, much more.

This news article is just a general announcement, more information will follow in the near future!

ShoC locations in CoP engine! :omg:

That sounds awesome.

I own both SoC and CoP but haven't even completed the first game yet (using complete 09, naturally). I just find the game too intense to play for prolonged periods so I'll just boot it up and do a mission or two every now and then.

Last time I played SoC, I ventured out to an area west of the bar to meet some scientist or something. I got about half way there, fighting bandits all the way, before I got a pop up saying the scientist had been killed. Downhearted I turned back and headed for the bar to resupply only to be mauled by a huge pack of mutant dogs.

Brilliant, brilliant game.

I'm back playing this again after a bit of a hiatus; I was trapped underground shitting myself in terror as I recall. Luckily I managed to get through, do the thingy then sneak back out. Unfortunately I wound up heading back to the bartender for another mission at 2am, and wound up wandering into a squad of people rather non-plussed to see me, but even more distracted by the army of wild dogs, screaming rat-things and invisible blood-suckers hunting them.

I spent five in-game hours on the roof of a bombed-out building watching muzzle flashes light up horrible obscenities against nature and hearing men scream as they died in horrible, horrible agony. When the screaming and the shooting stopped all I could hear were the monsters hunting me. I sat, barely seeing in the starlight, pointing my gun at the top of the stairs, until dawn.

I love videogames.

Started playing this again and am now up to Pripyat itself. It all becomes a bit combat heavy when you hit the city but it's still enjoyable. The one bugbear is that mods which make the game x10 more atmospheric also seem to screw up the scripting, so I'll prob have to uninstall them if I want to complete the thing.

So I bought and started playing this last night. Bit late on the pick up I know. First things first, the game looks awful, some of the outside ground textures just look like gradient colour squares. I am in the process of downloading the Complete mod for installation tonight. It seems bizarre that this is a DX11 game, but the vanilla version looks so bland. Indoors (I'm in some big rusting ship with loads of stalkers) looks great though. The atmosphere is great, easily the most bleak game I have played, I'm really looking forward to getting lost in it. The gun sounds though, none of the guns seems to have any chunky bass kicks to them, the AK is especially noticeable, but it looks like the Complete pack doesn't alter the gun sounds. So mixed impressions so far, some of the design aspects feel a bit cheap, but the atmosphere thus far has been involving. Standard time lapse of an involving game as well, intended to play it for half an hour at about 11:30 last night, played it till 2am this morning. I'm surprised people have cited this as one of their best looking games, even with everything ramped up to max, it looks a bit like the original Witcher.

Reading that challenge the first that came to my mind was, "get out of there STALKER".

STALKER is the most underrated game this decade.

Nine months of hard but enjoyable work.

Nine months of debating, displaying and interacting.

Nine months of new personal relations and cooperation.

This is a huge development project coming to its end... and the birth of a finished mod concept.

Stalkers, MISERY awaits you!

http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-misery

should hopefully be ready soon!!

Its up!

Gonna install it now and test it as the official rllmuk guinea pig

Jesus this is tough

Attempt no. 1 = killed by a pack of dogs in the immediate starting area

Attempt no. 2 = successfully use almost all my ammo killing said dogs. Walking away feeling like a boss when a mutant pig backstabs me

Attempt no. 3 = get into my first shootout and died before i could even get a shot fired

Could be because im not on my main gaming rig too, but the mod crashes if i set the game to anything other than static lighting/med detail. But it seems really good. Id say if it runs okay without crashing on my gaming PC this will be excellent

Picked this up in a Steam sale a while back and still haven't tried it. From your description and this note in the features list I'm guessing using the mod is a bad choice for someone like me.

Its very tough on your PC. If your rig isnt up to it, this mod will crucify it. I tried it on my work PC which has a 9600GT 512mb card, and it would crash alot, and flat out refuse to load on anything other than static lighting. But my gaming pc has a 4870 1GB, and it runs fine.

couple of videos i took yesterday

Holy crap that looks cool :D

Sorry this is to do with the orginal game but can we make this thread THE Stalker thread from now on?

I started playing SoC again, along with the Complete mod to see for myself what all the fuss was about. I'd been playing through on the Oblivion Lost mod before and had fallen quite madly deeply in love with it (mostly for its inclusion of zombies and its weapon characteristics) but again, curiosity wanted to switch things up. First off, even on medium settings it's a fair bit prettier now :)

The weapon sounds are great, although I've only really used a handful in this mod so far. Every incidence of a gun to buy seams removed - granted ive only been in the world a couple of hours but even The Trader only wants to sell me pistols and bandages, even when its despite me handing him half a dozen AKs each time I see him. But im getting used to this fact as some of the mods other additional prizes are kicking in and creating some spectacular bits of gameplay.

The AI update :o

Im still starting off at this stage and In Oblivion Lost I would be saving up for the long barrelled double barrel shotgun that the game does so well, but seeing as there's fuck all to buy, it falls on robbing some poor bugger to start things off.

I have a tradition left over from OL where I just have to pick a fight with the border patrol. They've got alot of neat stuff at their base but more importantly they're just there, trying not to disturb anyone whilst they go about their business. The cheek. Now with OL its fairly easy to do this as there's an AK in the first camp you arrive in, you walk up to the top of the hill, look down the road and take pot shots at them all day but now its just a pistol and a few clips of ammo you’re delt.

Plus as I later found out these guys are hardcore armoured, armed to the hilt mother fuckers now who don't put up with any of my nippy sniperery crap. My attempted ambush ended with me limp running back to camp, clutching an Ak now unbelievably, with about 13 rounds of ammunition id managed to get from the one guy Id killed and about 8 or 9 guys, the entire base as it turned out, all after me. I thought id be safe hiding out at the beginners camp and that probably the soldiers would have given up way before they even got that far but no! It turned into a mini war/ bloodbath as they hoved into view over the hill, still totally remembering I tried to fuck with them, and proceeded to kill everybody who put up a fight. All the while with me hiding in the loft of a near by building like a fucking hero. I had chosen the dickish move of hiding behind a tree and blasting the small patrol that go up and down the road. Id singled out the guy at the end as he'd walked by me and they all totally remembered. I've never seen my actions carry over to so much more of the game. It was as if it was calling me on my bullshit tactics. The soldiers eventually left and I got to see the carnage - every dude, the guitar player, the main leader who normally gives you a few quests to do, they were all ragdolled all over the place. There was even a guy who had landed on one of the rooftops probably from one of the many grenades thrown, all pretty much directly attributable to me.

:D:facepalm::omg:

I like Oblivion lost - zombies attack the camp at night, the regular blow outs that requires you to bunker down for a few minutes, the drivable vehicle option (which i totally never used but nice all the same) and also the night times are near pitch black. If your torch runs out and there's something out there looking for you, you will actually shit yourself, but the Complete mod has that Ai. It has many things over and above Oblivion Lost but by far the most impressive thing I've seen so far is that Ai.

It is a shame there's no zombies though. I love me some zombies :(

Hmm, that might be it then, I've got a 512mb 4870 which only ever seemed to run COP erratically ( amazing game but jesus, that engine coding... ) so it wouldn't surprise me to know that this had killed it. I sure hope GSC have learnt some tricks with Stalker 2 when it comes to optimising.

Those videos. :o

Stories like that are what makes Stalker so special. Everyone whos played it has a different story about a time an ill judged attack on a patrol went south or when they spent a night huddled in a hole hiding from thunderstorms and bloodsuckers or something!

The AI really doesnt get the credit it deserves alright. Playing the game on master difficulty is as good if not better than the AI in halo, yeah it does stupid things from time to time but any game that can give you a tense, exciting, terrifying fight with even just a single enemy is doing something totally right.

Oh and i dont mind if this gets used as the official stalker thread. I know theres another thread but if people want to use this we could merge them and ill update the OP with all significant mod info/details etc

CoP is so horribly optimised its not even funny. It takes roughly 5 minutes for me just to load the game at first. Every time after is fine but that first savegame will literally sit there for 4-5 minutes loading. Not to mention the huge

pauses every few minutes while the engine thinks about what to so next. Even recording that blowout video, a combination of FRAPS and the engine brought my PC to its knees and i was down to a single digit framerate for a good chunk of it

Uninstalled the Misery mod after a few hours of playtime. Fed up of it constantly crashing as soon as I load up any of my last few saves.

Yeah it did that on my work pc too, if i died and reloaded it would crash every time, but not on my gaming pc. A bit weird alright. Its a great mod bit so far id have to say cop complete is far more polished and playable
