Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II

I guess, but considering how long I'll have to look at his mug during the title screen, I think I can handle the trauma. I'm not a huge fan of the Sonic Rush sprite or character either, and that's possibly my favourite post-Megadrive 2D Sonic game...

Better than Sonic Advance you say? Faint praise indeed...

Guys, here's the thing. You're waiting for Sonic to be 'good again'. But, as much as it pains me to say it, as much as it kills the child inside of me to admit it, it was always rubbish. The first one was a moderately fun platformer-as-reaction to the infinitely superior Super Mario Bros (which I hated as a child!) Everything since then, EVERYTHING since then, has been utterly gash.

I love the Game Gear one very much (Suppose you could also say MS version). The whole game is enjoyable and I enjoy it more than the megadrive version. Don't get me wrong I love green hill zone, but marble zone can piss off.

Sonic 2 gamegear is decent, but stupidly hard. It took many, many weeks to finish this. Stupidly difficult first boss (on the game gear at least) and the wind gliding bit on the second level took a while to get the grips with.

Sonic 2 megadrive was a decent game, and is good fun.

I thought sonic 3 on the megadrive was decent, but i finished the game in a weekend.

Sonic adventure 1 was ok, sonic adventure 2 was good fun for me. Fully completed that game.

Mario->Sonic when coming to quality of games.

I hope sonic 4 is a return to form.

So why did you bother posting it then?

Um... because the point I was making was that since Sonic 1 there have been an awful lot of shit Sonic games?

Your objection doesn't even make sense. Do you punch scientists in the face every time they provide evidence for their theories?

Or maybe you can't handle the truth, that Sonic is actually shit. :(

Are you under the impression that you're the only person who has played the old Sonic games recently and therefore needs to 'inform' everybody else of what they're like? You're not. I've played them last week. They're fantastic. I'd love to play a new one of similar quality. The end.

Couldn't agree more. The 16-bit era of Sonic was superb and one of his last successes was, in my opinion, Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast). Although the Sonic Rush-series, are pretty good as well, but only different.

I'm having good hopes for Sonic 4. Point made.

My point was that your "That's a lot of shit" was referring to the rest of your post. It's nowhere near as funny now I've had to explain it. Also, posting a list of games featuring Sonic isn't evidence that he's always been shit you muppet.

It is if all the games are shit. Which I suppose is subjective, some people really a lot of them, but that would make them idiots. 'The good ones', first one aside, weren't even particularly good at the time, we were just young, dumb and impressionable.

Sprite Machine, if you really thought Sonic 2 and 3 were fantastic, you're probably going to love Sonic 4. Good for you. Nevermind that Sega have effectively traded on the waning good will of ever-ageing Sonic fans for over a decade now, just don't stop believin'.

You're not off to a good start when start insulting people who have a different opinion.

That's presumptuous. I've already said it looks a bit cheap and nasty.

C'mon dude, around 90% of those games can be entirely dismissed as terrible, the rest are up for debate but remain the exclusive domain of ardent Sonic apologists looking for a guilty pleasure.

Yes, it does look cheap and nasty, I can entirely agree with you there.

For me, Sonic 2 is the best game. I really enjoyed Sonic 3&K and I think it's very close to call indeed; especially bringing music into account.

Sonic 1 has dated the most though. Greenhill zone is basically the best looking one and the whole game in general is a little bland. I never got it though (until recently (5 years ago) as Sonic 2 came with my Megadrive and it was my first game.

I thought Sonic CD was terrible. It felt so thrown together and unfinished.

I agree with this in part; it feels like Sonic 2 in debug mode gone crazy.

EDIT: In keeping with my forum handle, Sonic Shuffle is rubbish.

It certainly wasn't perfect but I thought it was a step in the right direction of where Sonic should be going. Atmospherically it was brilliant and it was experimental gameplay wise without changing the core platforming. The time thing wasn't implemented as well as it could have been but it showed a little bit of thinking that wasn't the usual add more charecters and stuff. I would love to have seen a sequal where they could have fleshed out time travel a bit and maybe made it easier to to change time.

I think I like the concept more than the finished game but I get the feeling that so much stuff was left out due to time constaints and such that if a sequal would come out (by the original staff) it would probably be greatest platformer created.

finished Sonic 3 and Knuckles finally last night,

noticed my save file was just over 3 hours to play through the whole thing. All round good but so many levels are way too long and frustrating. It may be nostalgia but Sonic 2 was a much better game with good design and more stand out moments. I prefer the visual style of the first two over 3 and Knuckles too.

I grow less fond of Sonic 2 as more time passes. I think the visual style is a little too pixelly, a bit overly mechanical and thrown together. It's also quite buggy. It's a tough call, though; it used to be my favourite. I've probably played it so many times that it's just become a bit predictable. I almost cringe when I hear the music to Emerald Hill Zone because I must have started the game about a hundred times.

I still think it's got the best two-player mode, though.

There's a topic buried somewhere in the Retro folder about Sonic Megamix, a remixed version of Sonic 1 with loads of new graphics and characters thrown into it. Requires a MegaCD emulator/bios to run it, but it's simple enough to find. It's not bad, actually, particularly if you know the Sonic games inside out and want something new. Although it's sadly unfinished.

I was playing Sonic 2 earlier today (no doubt as a result of this thread reminding me how awesome Sonic is) and I was amazed how difficult it was - couldn't get an emerald past the third one (not my fault admittedly, bloody Tails!) and the end boss was such a complete gimp (slightly mis-time your jump and you run into his spikey fingers) that I gave up in frustration.

Still a tops game though! I really need more practise.

The better 2D Sonic games have always had a nice balance of careful platform negotiation and relentlessly quick sections, and tend not to bugger things up by launching you from a spring-enhanced boost into a spike trap, or by having the whole thing run on rails as you go from teleports to loops to springs and all sorts. Sonic 1 on the Megadrive arguably found a better balance than 2/3/S&K - you had stages such as Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone that discouraged rushing through everything, but there were still moments where you could build up speed and enjoy moving really fast and getting loads of rings. I know that the speed is what defines Sonic's character, but it shouldn't be an excuse to make levels that run on autopilot...
