Conference Footage.

As the biggest change from the original Resident Evil 5, Alternative Edition will feature game controls that make use of Sony's recently announced Motion controller. For series fans, another big change is the addition of a new episode featuring Chris and Jill. The episode will be based on the flashback scene from the original RE5, where the two characters infiltrate the Spencer estate in Europe.

"It was a key incident in Resident Evil 5, but it was only there as a flashback scene," Miho said. "In Alternative Edition, you'll actually be able to play through it. We had a lot of requests from fans about it."

During Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's press conference at the Tokyo Game Show this evening, Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi took the stage and announced Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition.

The new edition makes use of Sony's latest Motion Wand controller. Graphically it looks the same as the original Resident Evil 5, except for an added cursor on screen reflecting your motion control movements. You play with one hand holding the Wand and the other a Dual Shock 3.

Besides motion controls, the game has additional content as requested by fans, Takeuchi said.

There will also be a teaser trailer shown later.

It's scheduled ship date is Spring 2010 in Japan, the same time as the expected shipping date for the Motion Wand, meaning this could be a launch title. No word on if this game is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 due to the control scheme. We'll keep you updated.

They showed in the E3 conference you could use two wands for one person (which would mimic the dualshock layout quite well), I'm pretty sure that's a typo of some sort.

No, it isn't. Sony already mentioned some time ago they are looking into single-wand being the default control scheme, with dual-wand being optional.

They designed the controller.

We haven't actually seen much of what it can do, and because a preferential control scheme hasn't been implemented for the wand for an existing game designed for a different control scheme, people are going crazy over something that doesn't exist yet. This probably isn't the type of game the wand was designed for, I bet.

Problem is, with wii RE4 it was a new way to play an incredibly unforgettable, respected and acclaimed title where as this will be a new way to play an almost forgotten, tired looking sequel that was already dated the day it came out.

Exactly. Also, you didn't have to hold the Gamecube controller in one hand in Wii RE4.

Yes, exactly. I'm saying it's Capcom people should be digging into, not Sony. Some people will have a dig over anything.

You're saying that it was unreasonable to expect Sony's Waggle Wand to have similar capabilities as the Wiimote? That it's Capcom's fault that Sony managed to fuck up a simple idea that's been done before by not thinking that an analogue stick might be handy?

If you think there's no money changing hands between Sony and Capcom to have a major franchise associated with they new controller then I think you're being a tad naive.

It has different capabilities, evidently. The thing uses a camera attachment, fer christ's sake. Maybe it should have had an analogue stick, I dunno, point is it's not Sony's game, is it?

Yeah, big money will have been swapped hands for (what will be) a year old game.

Holding the DS3 in one hand doesn't seem so bad if you rest it on your leg/in your lap. Unless you happen to be demonstrating the game at TGS there's no real reason you'd be standing up whilst playing, so I certainly think it's less of an issue than people are making it out to be.

That said the seeming lack of movement control on the motion controller is an annoying limiting factor, especially as early drawings featured one. It doesn't look like they're going down the interchangeable button plate route, either, so the only real hope is that the photos aren't of the final hardware revision, although if the thing's shipping in the Spring they can only have a couple of months left to make any adjustments.
