I'm not really familiar with the dinobots. How did they work? I'm assuming there weren't robots "disguised" as dinosaurs walking around in the present day. Was it actually set in the far past?

They were robots that transformed into robot Dinosaurs that did indeed walk around in Transformers' non-descript Metropolitan city during the present day :)

The origin I remember is that they were created millions of years ago after the Ark first crashed on Earth and Shockwave turned up. The Ark made the Dinobots as dinosaurs were the dominant beings at the time, it needed something to fight against Shockwave.

The had a rumble and all fell into a tar pit for millions of years. Cant remember what happened but Shockwave came back on the scene in the present day and wasted everyone. Ratchet (i think) escaped the carnage and went and found the Dinobots and reactivated them so that they could take out Shockwave.

Thats how i remember it from the G1 comics in the UK at least.

In the cartoon series Wheeljack created them after discovering some dinosaur bones and deciding that the strength of a dinosaur could shake up the Decepticons somewhat (or something to that effect anyway)/.

The comic was much, much more intelligent than the TV series. They did made a small error though. As I recall, they mistakenly placed the story in a time period after the dinosaurs had become extinct (according to our current understanding, at least) and had to address it later by stating that the dinosaurs on which the dinobots were modelled were the last remenants of the species and had been protected from the mass extinction event.

The cartoon, on the other hand, has Wheeljack creating dinobots in the mid 1980s, after discovering dinosaur bones in a cave.

. There's also an amusing spoof of the episode called
(probably NSFW - Optimus swears a lot).

It wasn't a mistake in terms of the original comics: they took place in the Marvel Universe, which had/still has dinosaurs existing in an hidden area of Antarctica.

Not only did we get dinosaurs, we got Spider-Man vs Megatron. Ah, those were the days.

Ooh, I never knew they were ever part of another established universe like that. Did any other Marvel people ever fuck their shit up?

You sneaky editor ;)

Not really, the last references after the Savage Land tended to involve ancilliary characters (Circuit Breaker meeting the Beyonder and telling him how much she hated Transformers springs to mind). Of course, the most famous one was Death's Head, who went from hunting Rodimus Prime to being hired by him to hunt down Galvatron, destroying Bumblebee* (fuck yes), hunting Cyclonus and Scourge only to get brainwashed by Unicron into killing Shockwave before finally killing Unicron and reappearing fuck knows when, getting shrunk by The Doctor, adventuring in the 8500s, tracking down The Doctor in panto in 1980s Southend (don't ask) and finally travelling to New York and fighting the Fantastic Four. Then things start to get ridiculous.

*boomtish*

* U.K only - G.I Joe destroyed him in the States (fuck yes)

I'd kill for a Wheeljack appearance. He was always the coolest Autobot and was like "Megatron? Pft I'll make some dinosaur autobots to fuck his shit up." And they did. Then they went mental and started bossing everyone else around.

Then Grimlock became smart and went into Unicron's head to find some more autobots or something.

RIP Wheeljack from the 1986 movie. Your burnt out carcass shall always haunt my dreams. :(

Ferrari 458 = Hot Rod? I'm struggling to think of any really famous autobots that are missing from Bay's movies other than Wheeljack, Prowl and Sunstreaker...

Well if they have Hot rod I really hope Kup is in there as well. Also theres Wheeljack of course, perceptor, blur, Ultra Magnus, cliff jumper, prowl, mirage. Still plenty of Autobots for Bay to mess up ;)

The silly events after Death's Heads encounter with the Transformers weren't in the TF US or TF UK universe, fortunately. It's suggested that The Doctor moved DH into another Marvel dimension, in addition to transporting him through time. Spider-man and the Neo Knights are, AFAIK, the only superheroes that have been confirmed as existing in the TF US/UK universe.

Anyone wishing to see Autobots and superheroes in the same panel should check out the New Avengers/Transformers mini-series. However, be prepared to be disappointed.

The Dr Who/Death's Head crossover is reprinted in the Cold Day in Hell paperback, apparently.

Edit: I can't find much on the Dr Who/Death's Head story. An low quality image of a giant-sized Death's Head next to the Tardis can be found on aDeath's Head profile page.

Edit again: Rapidly moving into OT territory, but I just found an image of Simon Furman's proposed NeoKnights spin-off. It looks like every other 90s action comic. They appear to be standing in front of the Stargate.

Bay makes a stunning revelation about the second movie. He says it was a mess. Who knew?

He says the writers strike is largely responsible, as they basically had to rush a script, which ended up crap. But, and I hope it isn't just PR guff (as if), he says they've learned from it and the third should be better.

Thats bullshit, although I enjoyed the second movie for what it was the many problems in the film cant all be blamed on a rushed script.
