A song of ice and fire

No there's still no Winds date, but rather than continue to mess the TV thread with book discussion, do you think the shows beats are going to be replicated in the last two novels.

I can see a few - Jamie knighting Brienne seems like it must happen, but I'm unsure about everything else. Even the big stuff, like Danny going bad seems suspect and I wonder if GRRM will deliberately end it differently anyway.

Thoughts?

The last thing we hear is Brienne shouting a word. I think between an interview and a sample Winds chapter it's confirmed

Spoiler

She tells "Sword", and has went to find Jamie and take her to Lady Stoneyheart.

I don't expect either to die at that point, seems way too early, but Pod might be fucked.

He has spent way too much time on the 3 eyed raven storyline to drop it as easily as it was in the series.

And Arya will have more to do in the final couple of books, convinced of that. I hope that he does take a very different approach, why the hell not at this point.

I assume he's gonna change any plans he had on the plot depending on the tv audience reaction, he could see it like a massive beta test in that regard. Then he just needs to decide if they hate things for good reasons so he should drop 'em or things he can fix by writing twenty pages about the ingredients of a feast. I don't see that he's as much reason to bring back fan-service characters who disappeared long ago, and/or keep them alive for an hour of being swarmed by baddies.

I think it diverged too much anyway.

much anyway. There'll be some of the same beats worked in, but I doubt it'd have went this way anyway. The 'winner' makes zero sense in the book context, and I can't see it happening.

Spoiler

Like, the Bloodraven is a fucking tree. Like a proper fucking tree. There's no way Bran ends up on the throne unless it's some weird symbolic stuff.

I'm unconvinced by

Spoiler

Dany's turn

because I suspect there is more to the "Mad King" than we've been told to date. Books Targs have a history with visions, and I expect something drove him mad rather him being an out and out bad 'un. Maybe even Bran, trying to do something. It'd add another layer on a story we've already got a few perspectives on.

Would really like Winds now please. Kinda half hoped for an announcement today, but that was a crazy hope.

Yeah I'm much more excited about this now given the flat ending to the TV show. I will need a serious recap to see where characters are though! Wasn't there a map/website with all that info on?

The world of Ice of Fire is a great app for catching up.  I think Dany will still turn but it’ll be played out much longer. There’ll be no night king. Bran ends up on the throne but it’s because he’s the bloodraven and not bran

I did the evil deed but I’m going to buy a physical copy at lunch time. I’m going to stay out of the thread until I’m finished. See you all on the other side.

Mine downloaded sometime between midnight and 1am. No formatting errors that I've found so far (bar the capitalisations at the start of chapters already mentioned.)

I will see you all in a couple of weeks. Please don't be all over Twitter posting spoilers.

I was sssoo addicted to that series back then, sadly after the disaster that the TV show was and the fact he's going to keep the ending similar I've pretty much given up. Won't read any more of them as there's far better things out there. I am currently plodding my way through the entire Krondor series by Raymond Feist as there's a good bit of fantasy I've never given much time to before. Plus it has a proper final book!

Wow that is ages, even more worrying is that he added more threads in a Dance With Dragons, all that stuff with wargs remember?

I still think the first three though are incredible books, just stop reading after the battle at the wall (I think?)

I'm just assuming that the book (and following volumes!) will never come out, and I'm actually okay with that.

I feel like my interest in ASOIAF (and pretty much all thousand-page-per-book epic series) has plummeted, and when I read something like the Stormlight Archive I'm mainly wishing someone would edit it down to be about 40% of its actual length.

Restarted A Game of Thrones a few weeks back - only read through the whole lot once, and it was a very long time ago and you know what?  I'm REALLY enjoying it - certainly more than I did originally.

If I take my time with the series, maybe Winds of Winter might drop as soon as I finish Dance With Dragons....?  (Sorry.  It won't, will it?)

Thinking of giving these a go - I've watched (and enjoyed) all of the TV show. Not the new prequel series though...

Is there much in them for someone who's already watched the show? I'd be interested in finding out more backstory about the Tarrgaryons for example, and stuff that happens outside of Westeros.

Lots of story arcs veer off in a very different direction around book 4 - characters that never make it into the show are introduced and it's entirely possible that the ending will be drastically different from the show (which would be a good thing!).  If he ever finishes it, of course.  What is it, 12 years since the last book came out?

I finished book 1 last week and it's very, very close to the TV show.

Fire and Blood is the book that House of the Dragon is based on, and that's a totally different tone, much more like a history book.  It's essentially a history of the Targaryen kings and covers half of the time period from Aegon the Conqueror through to where GoT starts - volume 2 will tell the rest.

Not sure if you got around to reading them or not, but they are absolutely worthwhile if you liked the show and want a more fleshed out, in depth look at the story, characters and settings. It's so worth it.

A quick Google will find you the PDFs, and the audiobooks are easily accessible.

The show veers off completely from the books from about season 5.
