Your favourite sports game commentary

Reminds me of that old Codies snooker game on the PS1, I think. World Championship Snooker. The commentary didn't even match the game play.

"Looks like he's going for the pink..." ... as the computer player slams the black into the corner pocket.

As for football ones, I remember FIFA International Soccer on the SNES and other FIFAs back then when they had the button bashing goal celebrations.

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!"

You'd start smashing the pad up to make all the air horn noises, chants and stuff. Brilliant. And you couldn't see anything because the screen was filled with this flashing sign with GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAL scrolling across it at high speed.

I was doing this only the other night!

I loved the no-mark that they roped in for the first couple of PES games, with 'the sun is shining and the wind is shooting through the stadium' being a personal highlight. Marvellous.

Your choice of word has just triggered the image of a football game featuring commentary by Ron Manager.

And the logical conclusion of that thought would be to have him accompanied by Alan Partridge.

SOMEONE MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Pro Evo 4 had some stinkers. "He's taken it sideways!", "That's a long one!" etc. There's an amazing one too when the ball's cleared off the line and the co-commentary team goes berserk in tandem and yell over the top of each other for some unknown reason. It's had a bit of a renaissance with my brother and I recently, and about 5 years after it came out and hundreds of hours of play it still comes out with something new. Absolutely bizarre. We had a handball too. A fucking handball.

It's gotta be the Japanese commentary on Winning Eleven 6: Final Evolution on the Gamecube.

"OOOH CHANCE"

"EDASNET!"

"AYE AYE!!!"

The US commentary on the Gamecube MLS game was good too....

"Threads the needle..." (through ball)

..and the other bizarre US commentary you get!

I like it in that game when they shouted "SHOOT-O!!" and how they pronounced David Beckham's surname, "Behhh-kum".

ISS 98 on the N64:

"Consumate skills, there"

"He's taking it all the way" [said to the tune of "there's somebody at the door!" from Rod Hull & Emu.]

When either of the above were said, house rules were that you had to repeat the phrase over and over again until it wasn't funny.

Special mention goes to "the sun is shining and the wind is shooting through the stadium" from Pro Evo 4. That phrase is so memorable, it should go in a book of famous quotations.

Murray Walker, F1-98. Somehow the commentary algorithm manages to capture the insanity of Walker's commentaries better than real life.

In the original F1 game on the PS1 Murray's entire commentary seemed to be based on what gear you were in.

"UP INTO THIRD GEAR"

"DOWN INTO SECOND"

Another WE6:FE classic:

"PARTY ON A BUS"

select English as your language and every time the commentator said "Nigeria" is was clearly not his voice. he gained a thick accent and deep resounding voice for that one word.

Two classics.

FIFA 10 needs Barry Davies and Alan Partridge commentary packs. Both would be genuinely worth some space bucks.

There's a gap in the market for a fun, crazy football game. Enter, Adidas Power Soccer 3...

Okay, FIFA 08. I know he is.

"I'm Chrrrrrrris James!"

But my current favourite has to be in the recent FIFA games, when in the last 5 minutes you do a shocking pass on the edge of midfield that goes straight to the opposition, and Andy Gray shouts, "AND THAT INTERCEPTION MIGHT JUST DECIDE THE MATCH!"

Honourable mention for the hilariously spliced-together lines of FIFA 97: "And it's LIVERPOOL... nil, MANCHESTER UNITED...two.

Oh man the first Ps1 F1 game brings back so many memories. I spent so many hours playing that game, it had such great atmosphere and presentation

"OUUUUUUCH!" "Look at this... LOOK! AT! THIS!" "OUUUUUUCH!" "It's not enough to be lucky, you've got to be good. And he is that"

I had a lot of love for Heinz-Harald Frentzen in that game.

Yeah particularly when it was said in night matches.

PES4 is my favourite. Absolutely barmy.

Anyone else playing FIFA10 getting a bit cheesed off by being told, 9 matches out of 10, what a lovely job Tyler and Gray have being paid to watch football? Never "actually, I get a bit cheesed off having to do this, half the time it's a tedious game but you have to pay attention anyway. All I want to do is go home. And it's cold".

There was an old Playstation footy game where you could dive and handball on purpose; there was a secret commentary track on there done by what sounded like a couple of cleaning ladies.

Can anyone remember what it's called?

Could it have been one of the early 3d FIFAs? some of them allowed diving.

I have a soft spot for Olympic Soccer on PS1.

"Cuts that ouyt!"

I played the Saturn version of Olympic Soccer - its commentary quotes were memorable enough that I posted about them when this thread was first made, and they were the first ones that came to mind when it was bumped today.

Do you remember these phrases?

I didn't know that Olympic Soccer had a club team sequel. The presentation looks very similar, and it shares some of the same commentary: "We're under way" at kick off, "He took the man not the ball!" and a very big delay on "A wonderful save!" In fact most of the sound clips lagged way behind the action...

Best of all was "I don't think they'll be exchanging Christmas cards!" after bad tackles. :D
