Edge 208

Why's that funny?

The plural of the normal use of 'Datum' is 'Data'.

Only really funny where the speaker prides themselves on their erudition and vocabulary - they're usually making the point that they know the singular of 'data' is 'datum', unlike most people. Like what Edge does, I guess.

However, I think 'datums' is correct usage when referring to geographical reference points; don't know what the context was in Edge, but if it's from the article on mapping NY then the joke may be on Mr Cochese, and the Edge subbie is spot-on.

So, the next month image? Halo Reach?

Oh could be. My initial reaction was something Frontier related, Elite IV maybe, because it looks a bit like their logo, but that was probably just (very) wishful thinking on my part.

BTW, can anyone remember what score Edge gave Gunstar Heroes?

<ducks>

Oh no! It's not very likely though, that they are correct based upon some esoteric knowledge. This is Edge, the home of using words what you do not know the meaning of.

Have you actually read the text which makes use of that word or are you just EdgeLOL? the first mention of it is in a quote from the developer about how the geographical data was obtained.

I wouldn't actually read the magazine, Terrence. Fine! I know I got it wrong, so piss off.

Yeah, sorry to spoil your post, man.

I was right there with you at first, ready to point and laugh, but I've done some technical editing in the past, wasn't 100% sure of this, and looked it up.

Curses! Foiled again, etc.

Halo on Legendary is so much better that it's almost a different game. Whereas on Heroic you'd be running into a room and spraying your ammo everywhere and taking out mountains of enemies without a second thought - which can be very dull - on Legendary pretty much every encounter with an enemy becomes a tense battle, asking for patience and thought as much as accuracy and a deep knowledge of the game's mechanics. The hill you ran up before with an eye only for the summit is now an elongated sequence of tiny skirmishes that play out for so long and with so much variety that it can be hours before you reach the next checkpoint. The enemies no longer rush at you on preset paths, but react to every moment almost of their own will - convincingly ducking, weaving and hiding as you chip away at their health. Your weapon choice is no longer a case of which gun you prefer the look and sound of, but which will work best with the other one you've got stashed away for that particular enemy in front of you. You need focus and concentration, and thanks to the free-roaming nature of the AI, the ability to form battle plans on-the-fly - pure reaction that you can't ever plan for.

Halo on Legendary, 8 years on, is still the most finely-balanced and rewarding FPS around. On any other setting it's a dated, albeit stylish romp that will bring back some fond memories. On Legendary it's a battle for every virtual square centimetre on the ground - and you haven't got time to reminisce.

The AI is exactly the same in Legendary as in Heroic - I thought the only difference was the shooting accuracy?

As the thread's been bumped, I've been meaning to ask, what's going on in that picture in the PES2010 review where Kuyt appears to be running with the ball towards Liverpool's goal, Torres is tackling him and Gerrard is in the background going WTF? When I say what's going on, I mean apart from what I've just said, which is pretty much all of what's going on.

Interesting slide from a presentation on Halo's AI implementation:

I can see why their playtests revealed what they did - from what I remember, enemies fired more not only more accurately but also fired many more shots at once as you raised the difficulty level, forcing you to think more tactically, take cover more often and be more accurate as you couldn't stand in the open for long. If it was your standard 100 health points and medkits FPS, the extra difficulty would just be a pain in the arse, whittling down your scarce health points more quickly between the available medkits, but it works brilliantly with Halo's recharging shield system.

That was a fascinating read. There are some really smart people at Bungie and the thought that they put into just one aspect of the game is testament to that, and it paid off massively given how great the combat in the Halo games is.

And then they decided to remove the Elites  and replace them with ugly hulking monkeys :hat:

Halo: CE was a fluke, unless they're getting the complete original team back together, I don't have much faith in the current lot being able to top it anytime soon.

The only thing the sequels have managed is to improve the multiplayer side of things, which sadly is some sickness that Infinity Ward might also have contracted.

im serious, stop arguing such detail about a fucking computer game. im just killing time at work. youre probably at home. seriously, wake your woman up or heres a nice tip, go to a streaming porn site, have a wank, stop worrying about fucking mario.

how old are you, if its anything above 16 then hang your head. :(

hes got a point, women are basically shags and company, so after a while...who needs the company, and the internet will suffice for other needs. and you dont need to drive it home afterwards.

Amazing scenes! Missed this at the time.

Reminds me when you had a meltdown playing in the PES Leagues! Good times.
