[FM3] Steering wheel setup

Recommended Posts

After quite a bit of tinkering and testing over the weekend I think I've settled with the setup below. Granted, the default steering wheel setup is great as it is, but it has some rather big deadzones in places, which takes the precision away. I'm sure most of you know what the deadzones are, but for those who don't, a quick explanation: Deadzones are delay zones where nothing happens when you accelerate, brake or steer, and is indicated in percentages.

Deadzone is divided into INSIDE and OUTSIDE values, where inside means 'from 0% towards 100%', and outside 'from 100% towards 0%'. 0% is minimum (no) travel, 100% is maximum travel. So if the gas pedal has 10% deadzone inside, it means that for the first 10% of the pedal's travel (say 10mm out of 100mm max), nothing will happen. Hit 11% and it'll register your input. The same applies for outside deadzones, but the other way around.

No deadzones effectively means you've got immediate action, without any delay. Steering wheels in cars don't have deadzones either (wouldn't it be ridiculous if the first 10° of turning the wheel did nothing?) so there shouldn't be any in Forza 3 either. So here's the setup I'm using:

My Profile > Controller

Set the Wheel layout to 4. This allows you to look left and right with the X and B buttons respectively. It's to cover your blind angles.

Then hit X to bring up the advanced options:

Steering inside: 0%

Steering outside: 100%

Acceleration inside: 0%

Acceleration outside: 100%

Deceleration inside: 0%

Deceleration outside: 100%

Clutch inside: 0%

Clutch outside: 100%

Handbrake inside: 100%

Handbrake outside: 100%

Vibration scale: 100%

Force feedback scale: 100%

Save it, and return to My Profile, and select Multiscreen:

Set Multiscreen to ON, and the 'degrees between screens' to 72°. This brings the cockpit view back a bit, as if you adjusted your seat. Now you can see your mirrors properly and you'll also have a wider view, which increases the sense of speed nicely. There's no noticable warping or fisheye side-effect when doing this.

Well, this is what I use, for what it's worth. All the people who're using these settings already say it's increased their enjoyment of the game. Hopefully it works for you too.

I heard somewhere else that it should be changed to 62° not 72° - how is that calculated? Is it just down to personal preference rather than your aspect ratio?

Also, if eBay my G25 and official 360 wheel to get the cross-platform compatible Fanatec wheel can I make it fit onto a Wheel Stand Pro? I see it comes with a "drilling template".

62° is slightly too forward. You won't see the mirrors properly. 72° is the absolute minimum to see at least one mirror (often both). More than that and the view gets a fisheye lens effect, warping the view in a strange way.

Would this not make it very twitchy?

Surprisingly, no. It'll feel more direct, but not twitchy. Trust me, I'd be the first to complain if it was. You're not changing the sensitivity, just the deadzones.

Don't mention it. :eyebrows:

Aye, as far as cockpits go, the ones in FM3 aren't the most immersive. Dirt2 and Shift do a much better job. But if it's in the game, I'll use it. And it's not a total shit one, so I can live with it. The 2 mirrors do it for me.

Bonnet and nose view, compared to cockpit, gives you better sense of speed, which is improved by the 72° angle. It gives you a slightly wider view in those as well.

Thosr settings for the wheel are great, but I don't like the cockpit view. The bonnetcam feels more realistic because in real life the interior is in your peripheral vision and ignored apart from brief glances at the speedometer.

I'm now racing slow cars with all the assists off and starting to get a feel for it, but by God it's hard.

So you never look into your mirrors? I hope I never run into your back on the A2. :)

The in-game cockpit will be into your peripheral vision as well if you focus your eyes on the track in front of the car, don't you know? Same difference. ^_^

The eye can only focus onto something when looking directly at it. The rest is in the 'peripheral vision' and is out of focus. Or has your TV the size of a DS screen?

Do you catch my drift?

Games or lenses can never mimic the huge viewing angle (170°) of the human eye, ever. We'll have to do with this. Eye (not head-) tracking tech would come in handy here, though.

The lack of a side mirror is indeed a bit of a drawback, but I prefer that to 50% of my view being obscured by an interior. I undetstand your reasoning, but cockpitcam feels like playing through a letterbox to me. Maybe it'll become an option when I'm more experienced with the wheel.

The bonnetcam comes closest to realism for me because it feels the most like looking through a windscreen.

It doesn't help that the cockpit view with its lack of gear shifting and empty windscreens look so unconvincing.

Yeah. I always forget to turn the wheel enough anyway, so it probably just suits.

That's some straight talking about deadzones btw (re twitchiness etc), makes complete sense, I'm glad you said it. Cheers.

You may still use the cockpit view in that case, but push the seat all the way forward, so that the only thing you see is the top of the wheel and a little bit of dashboard, and a lot of the hood. Just set the multiscreen angle lower than the default angle. 10° or something to that effect.

Its annoying as the ones on the Wheel Stand Pro site are filled in - which gives them FAR more support on a WSP but the newer ones are awful and will slide off or lose balance as your forced to put your feet at the side.

I'd fill in the gap but what with???

Meerman. The Pedals are so shite. Why did they make a big hole?

- you can't stick your feet in there.

Dimahoo, you utter noob, you place your heels in the hole to prevent it from sliding away! ;)

My feet are size 9, you moaning little shits! :D

Soon. I need to get used to the wheel and the game some more.

I also need a headset. I've never played on Live before...

Aren't headsets standard with 360 consoles anymore? As far as I know, there's one included when you but the console. How can you not have one then? :)
