Can you think of a unique film?

Lost Highway

This is where the topic is such a tricky one because whilst on the surface a film like Lost Highway is a unique experience it borrows heavily from other films - Vertigo, Kill Me Deadly and the Testament of Dr Mabuse to name but three. It's a problem with practically all the suggestions in this thread.

Little Otik.

'When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife's pain, the man finds a piece of root in the backyard and chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. However the woman takes the root as her baby and starts to pretend that it is real. When the root takes life they seem to have gained a child; but its appetite is much greater than a normal child'

Combination of stop motion and actors. Very, very strange.

Strings

I love the idea that the Marionettes are actually aware of their strings and that they're actually what give them life. Cut the string off their right arm and it is rendered useless, cut their head string and they die. Strings fill the skies attached to all of the living marionettes and (a nice touch) if you build a cube-shaped frame around someone without walls and they'll still not be able to get out as their strings won't be able to leave the confines of the frame.

Ah, amazing! There are so many suggestions here, this is proving to be incredibly helpful, thank you all so much for doing this. I really like the sound of the last 2 films in particular. I have a lot of film watching ahead of me.

Thanks again! I'm so grateful.

I dunno, the first(?) episode of Pet Shop of Horrors (anime) has an incredibly similar story although it is an episode I suppose...

I must have seen this film at least a dozen times and even though I love it, I still don't know what it's all about. Maybe I'll finally get around to finishing the Paul Auster novel it's based on one of these days... although I quite like not being able to figure it out really so I don't think I'll bother.

The book doesn't illuminate anything else, no.

I'm a big Paul Auster fan and all his stories are fables: they are set in a pseudo 'real' world, but the set of coincidences, peoples' reactions and behaviour are straight out of fairy tales, like old heroic yarns and morality tales spread over new plots.

In short, you just enjoy the story for what is is and don;t try to make a lick of sense out of it: they are like fever dreams or dark fantasies that are very heightened and strange. I love the film, too. I was really pleased to hear Mandy Patinkin's huge on stage/Broadway, as he's a marvellous actor.

That's a great shout.

Oh, and I've been wanting to post Inland Empire since the thread started, but I'm not sure it is all that unique, seeing as it's basically a big hotch-potch of pretty much everything Lynch has done before. Not that that's a criticism. It's my favourite film of his. It's maybe my favourite film, full stop.
