Edge #209

It's great, I have never once been the victim of being stuck in a move until the animation has finished.

Yeah but DMC is a solid but not exactly seminal game, is this minor change which only hardcore geeks will notice really the only difference?

It's not as if Edge ever mark most RPGs very highly, but 5 is below the Edge average for a high profile RPG.

Blue Dragon a 6? For some reason I bought that cheap, and it was genuinely worse than the time I fell off the Eiffel Tower. RPGs really are mostly terrible.

Full English? How the hell do the Japanese know what's going on??

They have to wait for the English version, which is in full Japanese.

I'm not a hardcore geek. I might suck hardcore at these games, but I'm in no way a master. But I noticed. It's also got a lot on common with Viewtiful Joe (beyond her shouting "Can't touch me!" and "Too Slow!" when you dodge, heh) in that it's a much more reactive game, where I found that for the most part DMC is about unbridled aggression. Bayonetta is all about dodging, activating Witch ("Bullet") Time and annihilating everything on the screen with an enormous combo that nobody saw coming.

It feels a fair bit different to DMC.

Of course, there are masses of moves to purchase and even your shapeshiftin forms blur inbetween forms, creating a staggeringly flexible combat system and on normal (where there's no automatic assistance) it feels intuitive. It's an incredible achievement. The only things I struggle with are the 'Royal Guard' rip off from DMC and the Ukemi-alike from V-Joe. I just don't have the crackerjack timing.

Somehow Bayonetta feels both fresh, and a crafted pinnacle of a genre at the same time, and that's why it's awesome.

Full English? How the hell do the Japanese know what's going on??

Greater dedication to learning other languages? I was a bit shocked as I was expecting the Menus and texts to be in Japanese (I knew the voices were all English already), but I figured that I could stumble through a 3rd person action game. But no. Full English.

Oh, and also the health restoring item is a 'Green Herb Lollipop'. Made me chuckle.

Bayonetta's another Kamiya job, the probability of it being a good game was pretty much a certainty, the only surprise being that he seems to have excelled himself this time, now if he'd like to go and have a think about how to do survival horror or some other moribund genre (assuming Mikami's not beavering away on how to do it), I'd be most pleased :hmm:

Fucking Edge. Did they review it when it actually came out?

I remember our gamesmag Power Unlimited scoring it a 5.5 or something like that back then. The letters-section was rather interesting the next month.

That Dragon age review is bullshit, it's like they played a totally different game to me and it can't be because they played the 360 version because the reviewer mostly whines about the voice acting, story and companions which is the same in all 3 versions.

Can't wrap my head around that one it couldn't be more wrong.

GOTY for me and a lot of other people it seems reguardless of what format they're playing it on.

Yes that FFIII review is of the SNES FFVI.

Everything about the excitement over Bayonetta continues to baffle me. I played the demo. Perhaps it's just my personal apathy towards that genre, but that score puts a big fat cherry on top of the fact that I simply don't get it.

I can only assume that the DA review text contains some kind of clarification on why the console version is reviewing so low.

Most probably, I generally ignore all Edge reviews about racing simulation games as I can't stand them personally, yet Edge love them.

Good old Castelvania: SOTN got a solid 8. This is my favourite Edge as they score several games the same as SOTN - I guess these games all hold up to day as SOTN does? I can't wait to go back to Dark Reign and Hexen 2 on the PC, Duke Nuken on the Saturn, and G-police on the playstation. Right up there with SOTN, man!

  • CASTLEVANIA: SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT PlayStation
    8
    DARK REIGN PC
    8
    DUKE NUKEM Saturn Sega Lobotomy
    8
    FINAL FANTASY VII PlayStation
    9
    G-POLICE PlayStation
    8
    HEXEN II PC
    8

So - you've got to take such things with a pinch of salt! GTA3 printing error, etc...

Damn you Disciple, now you've put me in an even worse mood by reminding me of G-police and how i'll never see a 3rd. :hmm:

Not at all. It's an appalling review** - isn't there any editorial review of contributions before the print button is pressed?

The reviewer comes across as inexperienced in the genre (he/she certainly hasn't played BG) and unsympathetic. I wonder how far they actually got in playing the game. I shouldn't be surprised at this - seems to be the case generally now (bet they can't wait to get back to FIFA or shooting shit up) but this review takes the absolute biscuit.

I'm not pretending the game is perfect but the very points this reviewer is most critical of - the writing in particular, seem to be the highlight for many who actually play.

** the text that is - don't give a damn about the score awarded personally

You can bet that the guy who reviewed football manager was familiar with the genre. It wasn't reviewed by, say, Ellie Gibson I suspect...

It is though. It basically created a whole new genre. They basically took the depth of 2D beat 'em ups like Street Fighter II and turned it into a third person game, where completion is only the beginning. Mastering it is what it's all about, trying to wipe out your opponents with stylish combos. It's very freeform. It's SFII compared to God of War's Mortal Kombat.

From what I read and heard, Bayonetta takes this to a whole new level, combining DMC style play with Viewtiful Joe style play. Kamiya wanted to make the ultimate action game and it looks like he succeeded.
