The Paradox Strategy Games Megathread

Recommended Posts

Go for it. If it only gets 6 replies we can roll it back into this thread, but I think it might get a few.

I'll certainly be there for day one unless there are any suspicions of needing to be massively patched, at least.

The UI is shocking, particularly for navies, air & subs OP as shit. Played 35 hours in the past 4 days. Game is unreal. Battleplans take a while to get used to but are extremely well done. Industrial production could be a game to itself. Spend my whole war against Germany, Italy and Spain as France trying to ensure I had enough small arms, tanks and planes to cover the different fronts. Ended up driving the Spanish back across the Pyrenees by throwing waves of untrained conscripts with a rifle between every two at their trenches under swarms of dive bombers so I had enough heavy tanks and fighters for the fight against Germany and Italy

Has anyone else played Hearts of Iron: War Stories? Not played anything like it before but enjoyed the trial enough to buy the full thing. Made for great bedtime reading/playing.

Anyone picked up The Reaper's Due for CK2? Adds lots of cool disease & pestilence stuff to the game, as well as associated features such as court physicians and hospitals. Really brings to life the horrific nature of medieval medicine. Also works with old save games,  so I could continue my 250+ year run as the glorious Prytain empire.

The free update also adds options to disable some of the unpopular mechanics added when Conclave was released, such as defensive pacts and shattered retreats. You can refuse your allies' call to arms again now too, but with a prestige penalty for doing so. I award it ten pox-scarred faces out of ten.

Ten years of rebuilding my empire and transitioning to a war economy later, I destroy their dimensional portal and save the galaxy.

My only reward is an opinion bonus of +40 that decays in less than a decade. FFS

It's pretty good. I picked it up a while back and got the Commonwealth DLC when that came out. I've only played a couple of games through but I enjoyed them. The AI is all over the place though. I played as Canada, and the war was pretty mental. The UK spent ages trying to invade Northern Germany, while at the same time refusing to attack Ethiopia to the point that I ran down there and wiped out all the Italian and Japanese divisions, but the UK wouldn't occupy the empty remaining provinces. The US invaded Europe and just charged straight towards Berlin, and then got like 120 divisions pocketed by Vichy and Spain as they didn't push south from Picardy. Norway fought off the German invasion and counter invaded Denmark and now owns most of Northern Germany. Japan owns most of Asia proper but refuses to attack any islands. So while it makes no sense, it's a lot of fun.

Feels like if the AI can't prosecute a war, that's a fundamental flaw in a WW2 simulator. I'd definitely get the base game (£17 on CDKeys!) but I object to having to shell out for the DLCs - God knows how much I've spent on EUIV buying DLCs by now...

I do love all the alt-history Hitler-getting-assassinated etc possibilities though, too tempting.

Edit: I have spent £125.15 on EUIV. What the everliving fuck!

Bought Hearts of Iron IV.

Poland and France held off Germany resulting in a two-front war for two years until Germany collapsed, France turned Communist and turned everybody else Communist in the resulting peace deal. Poland extends all the way from the Soviet Union to France. The Socialist Republic of Germany still exists as a few scraps of land.

Two seconds after Germany capitulated, the Soviet Union declared on Poland for the states of Eastern Poland, wiped the floor with them and made peace. A month after that, the Socialist Republic of Germany finished the focus that gives them Western Poland... so now Poland is Germany and the completely destroyed Germany gets given half of Poland for free for no reason.

None of this makes any goddamn sense.

Crusader Kings 2 is currently free on Steam!

I've never been brave enough for grand strategy before but I feel ready now after reading a couple of guides.

I'm really really tempted to pick up Stellaris even though it looks like something that'll either grab me totally or have me never running it again after 3 hours of confusion. Watching some people playing it I found the depth really enticing but am worried it gets unmanageable after a while. Is it right you can limit the number of planets/systems you directly control and have the computer do the rest? Just worried it'll end up with 50 popups every time I unpause the game.

Stellaris is probably their most accessible game and if anything could do with more to manage, there's not as many moving parts to play with in comparison to something like CK2. It's probably never been a better time to jump onboard with the recent update, wars are actually fun to fight now.

Cheers. I'll probably pick it up next month, put a Saturday aside and take some time to go for it.
