Wipeout HD weekly speed laps

Asura

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start this up as there isn't currently a thread. The plan is, for each week, to select a course and speed class, and have people post their best speed lap time. You have until lunchtime Wednesday each week to post your time; please post them in the format below:

Forum name - PSN ID - Craft/vehicle - Track - Speed Class - Time

So, for example:

Asura - KutaiOkiwa - Harimau (Fury) - Chenghou Project - Flash - 38.43 seconds (this isn't my actual time :( )

Each week, the winner shall choose the speed class and track for the following week, or they can nominate another active member to do so.

Paulando, how did you manage 28 seconds? I just did 50 laps and can't get my times under 29.5.

Are you finding a cheeky barrel roll somewhere?

I tend to finish a lap with a boost, just before the line, to start the next lap at speed with a boost. I barrel roll off both jumps and use the second boost near the end of the track, so I can jump the crest of the last corner and barrel roll across the finish.

Also, irritatingly, my previous best was 29.8, and I was having trouble beating it, so I tried turning on Pilot Assist (as I turned it off the moment I got the game, so I didn't know what it really did) and I managed to get 29.5 or so. Now I've turned it off again and can't for the life of me beat 29.6.

Can anyone give me advice on this? Does the pilot assist automatically change your pitch to match the track? Also, I tend to spend a lot of time near the track edges; do you go faster whilst in the middle of the track or something? As that'd explain it. All of my non-pilot assist laps are perfect usually, so it isn't that I'm hitting walls.

That's pretty much the same method that I use. A boost just before the previous lap, a barrel roll on each jump, finishing on a boost pad, and the last boost at the end, raising me up enough for another barrel roll across the finish line. It's just a case of taking the corners as tight as possible really, and hitting as many boost pads as you can. Can you share ghosts like you could on the PSP version? I'll have a look tomorrow.

Definitely get rid of pilot assist, it's horrible, and it really won't get you anywhere. It makes it impossible to take corners tight enough, and it'll only make it harder as you progress to higher speed classes.

Otherwise, it's just a case of playing it over and over again until you really get a feel for the course. It's hard to explain. You learn how to hit the boost pads without flying fully over them, and how to gently switch sides at the right moment to hit as many of them as you can. I did play this track quite a lot on the PSP version, by the way.

I haven't got a clue how the guy on the number one spot managed to get 24-something seconds :(

EDIT: Also, use the D-Pad if you don't already! Tap-tap-tapping is better than the analog stick, believe me.

So, am I shooting myself in the foot by flying Assegai?

Just pick them out of habit to be honest!

No, not really - the official website states Assegai is one of the most popular teams.

In reality they're all great for races; however, a lot of the top times are ICARAS as they have the craft with the overall highest top speed, so, if you manage to tame the handling, in theory, you should be able to get the fastest possible times with them. That being said, some tracks with a lot of twists and turns would be better handled by a more agile craft with superior acceleration (thrust).

The only team to be consistently unpopular is Harimau; they have a very poor rating on the official site. I think this is because their stats are generally good, but they don't excel particularly at anything, whereas many of the teams excel at specific things. I personally really like racing as Harimau though.

EDIT: This next bit is to make it easier for me later

I know it's worth while doing barrel rolls, I wouldn't have got the times I got had I not used them. I'm just talking about that corner in particular, and how hard it is to achieve one there; meaning you spend more time trying to achieve it than ignoring and speeding right through.

Realised I hadn't even set a baseline time for this, so I went on quickly to set one. After 10 laps, not using a through-the-line boost and with plenty of mistakes I managed 39.36. That ought to give me something to chip away at for the next few days.

That being said, doing the above has made me think that through-the-line boost thing is something I'd change about the game. If I could alter one thing, I'd measure the distance over which a boost increases your speed, and make it so you can't use your boost within that many metres of the finish line. It ruins the speed lap mode; every lap is supposed to be an independent run - I hate having do to 1-and-a-half laps to get back to "ready" for the next attempt.

Its particularly annoying when you do a seemingly perfect run on the "other" lap.

I couldn't get the full effect of the before-the-line-boost on this one. Had to do it MUCH earlier so I didn't smash into the first corner.

Have to say, I'm loving the excuse to fire this up every Saturday afternoon!

What if we did a race at the end of result posting as an extra addition? Would be quite cool to see how times differ with us all on at the same time.

Just a thought, maybe Asura could turn this thread into a Speed lap tournament & I was also wondering about 'Fury' tracks? Are we allowed to choose them should we get the 1st place time? Any cheap skates rattling about?

Sorry for forgetting to update all, been really busy this week. In future, if people notice I've forgotten, don't hesitate to PM me.

So, Paulando has won this round. Paulando, you're the winner and may choose a combination - you're also allowed to nominate another member to choose, as this is your second week running.
