Christ you lot are going overboard. I know the rllmuk meta-discussion is all hoping for Natal/Kinect to be shit so they can have a snigger, but it's a redesigned 360, one with Wifi and massive HDD - you know, the things people've been moaning about for the last four or so years?

Stop worrying about "how it's going to play with the casuals" you bunch of wannabe corporate suits and think like a gamer, yeah?

Looks fine to me - I'd have thought most people have them sat horizontally on a shelf beneath the telly anyway, so the only thing you'll see is the slighty angled face plate. TBH I'd sooner they had done with it and styled them like a decent DVD player with a black brushed aluminum front and LCD display, especially as both Sony and Microsoft both want people to use them as media centres.

you fucking saps. i want games consoles to look like they have been beamed in from 400 years in the future where the 'rules' of design no longer exist and household electronics are not made to fit into some kind of bland, beige, Wallpaper* magazine lifestyle. housed in a casing that looks wrong whatever angle you view it from, with bizarre shapes and sweeping lines. as lousy as the original PS3 design was, at least it tried something different - all chrome and shit, like it fell off the back of the Jupiter II.

they built are for entertainment, not to match your fucking curtains.

I don't think anyone here particularly cares what it looks like, more questioning the disparity between the target demographic/marketing of Kinect and the bedroom stylings of the redesign. It just seems completely at odds.

In other words the way the machine looks isn't really an issue as far as traditional gamers are concerned, yet Microsoft seem to be appealing to them instead of those for whom the aesthetics of the hardware is an actual concern; my mum would never dream of having something like it on display in the living room.

The massive 90's side air vents... does this mean we can't have it lying horizontally any longer? It better can, or else it won't fit in my HDTV cabinet thing. >:0

For real. It looks terrifying and computery.

Maybe they're trying to balance Kinect's casual themes with something uber hardcore to show they'll still be supporting Gears Of War fans.

Imagine if Wii had been a bit pointier. Everyone could have still been happy.

Probably just on one side. The vents would presumably work better if the machine was sideways too, with the heat rising out of them and all.

I don't get why people have a problem with it. It doesn't look that much different to the original, except its black and it has a vent on the side

It will be interesting to see how big it is though, and whether it is quieter than the previous versions.

[EDIT] Or is this the hate spilling over from the Natal / Kinect thread?

Oh come on, yes you do. It's been five years... as with all re-designs, people expect them to be hot. Sexy. PS2 Slim, the PS3 Slim, Game Boy Advance SP etc.

This looks more like a PS2 dev kit than the next step for Xbox 360.

it reminds me of THIS round in the krypton factor

cheap bits of plastic, and odd shapes.

I want Natal/Kinect game based on the Krypton Factor now, where I can pretend to be a systems analyst from Basingstoke, then wave my arms about while my avatar waddles through a kids adventure playground assault course in a blue boiler-suit. It'd be a system seller

I think I love you a bit, Bingowings.

The PS2 slim does not in any way look sexy, but it was thin. Likewise, the PS3 slim (which I have) I think looked worse than the PS3, but from a purely functional standpoint it did its job at thinning the design down. If this 360 does the same, then job fulfilled. They tried to make it look a bit sleaker by adding a slanting vent, and in some aspects it succeeds, but its not there to win design competitions but more for designing a thinner model. Whether it succeeds doing that, we won't know until it is displayed.

It's not so much that it looks bad, but that it looks bad and so much unlike the aesthetically neutral stylings of the original Xbox 360. It's like coming home and seeing Westwood in your driveway and having that horrible lurch in the pit of your stomach and realising your stately Volvo now looks like Darth Vader's tie fighter.

Is the hard drive built in this time? I thought the idea was to get everything in 1 box so your regular Tom, Dick & Jane don't have to mess about with extra bits just to get your games saved and the machine on a network.

Which is the problem. People want a smaller, slimmer, more exciting looking 360. Instead, they make an existing one a bit more square and drill some holes in it.

I couldn't give two fucks about the design, personally.

However, it is admittedly some incongruent with the previous design -I would have expected something in the same mould.

But, meh, whatever.

more exciting looking 360.

Hahaha, carry on.

Design makes people lose their minds, doesn't it?

Yeah it's going to sit under your TV, design isn't a big issue - with my current 360 all you can see is the front of the unit.

It's not like I'm going to plonk the thing in the middle of my dining room table and gaze on it, in awe.

I'd be happy if it was quieter (yes even when playing off HDD) and have built-in WiFi
