I'll assume if that screen shot is real that a thermal sensor is built into the new system?

Seems like it- once the 360 detects it's getting a lil bit too hot under the collar, it looks like it auto turns off before any damage can be done. Pretty nifty feature unless it kept happening for no good reason or unreasonably.

For all we know the unit has doors on and the only ventilation is coming from the cable hole in the back. Or the heat sensor is screwed.

Shhh - everybody is busy RRODLOL'ing don't go pointing out it could be fake or forced !!!

It's always had that feature, AFAIK. The RRoD isn't caused by overheating per se, it's more the heating/cooling thermal stresses.

The fact that we've seen one new one overheat doesn't necessarily mean it would break the same way the old one did.

Ah ok, I always thought the overheating over some time warped some parts of the motherboard or something, so turning it off before it would get hot enough for it to happen would have prevented it. My mistake!

we haven't seen a new one overheat

the circumstances leading up to it are not clear - this could have been faked for effect

Meanwhile, in another thread

sonys attitude is disgraceful.

only offering a 1 yr guarantee is also disgraceful and against all consumer rights in the UK

they disgust me, and the YLOD problem is a massive problem and i predict will be every bit as painful as the rrod. At least microsoft had the balls to tackle the problem [at a reported coast of a billion].

what has sony done? screw over their loyal fans

i for one will NEVER buy another playstation

It's all a big conspiracy!

Is the YLOD really a big problem? I've barely heard of it, whereas the RROD was fucking massive.

Nowhere near the same problem- you only really seem at risk if you have a 60gb launch machine, and maybe some of the earlier 40gb's. That owl dude just posts about YLOD every chance he gets

YLOD or broken diodes, its a big problem

if people keep shuffling it under the carpet then so be it. Sony should have extended the guarantee on the machine to 3 years. The fact that they have not is a disgrace.

I'm guessing this is the source. (the cabinet looks the same, but I might be wrong)

It looks like it's user incompetence as the Wii seems to be too close to the main fan, but as I haven't actually seen how the fan works, I really can't really draw any proper conclusions.

Wonder why he has his games room set up like a shop.

So quite a lot of people then. Oh they're only the early adopters who helped Sony in the dark early days by getting a second job so it's ok for them to get fucked over.

Therein lies a whole other thread, the whole thing about what's considered to be a reasonable amount of time for a piece of electrical hardware to be guaranteed for. Personally, I don't think 3 years is enough, but as we've seen technology moves at an alarming rate so these companies feel differently so you're prolly right, Sony probably do think it's ok for early adopters to buy a new machine when theirs fucks up.

Grr... I think my 360's on the way out, or at least the disc drive is. Most games just whirr around and make horrible clicking noises, so I whip them back out before any more damage is made to the disc and/or drive (before you ask, it's a bog-standard Premium unit, oriented horizontally). Hopping over to xbox.com and seeing the big adverts for the new model, I'm wondering if I should just hold out for one of those rather than get my current box fixed. I mean, with summer here I'm not going to be doing huge amounts of gaming anyway, so I don't think I'll be too bothered by the wait...

I'd have no qualms in buying a replacement PS3 in the event (touch wood) of my PS3 going tits up. What I take issue with is, the fact I couldn't get a model with equivalent features - i.e. I'd have to lose PS2 backwards compat. That ticks me off.

Yep, it's fucking annoying that if mine breaks, I lose a PS2 in the process. I'd have to buy a Slim, which I think looks like a tacky mess and get the fat PS2 down from the loft.

Plus the fact that the PS2 looks like ass on modern TVs. The PS3 does an ace job of upscaling/smoothing the PS2 image.

Oh well...

Back on topic. When are the new 360s available in the UK?

I'll update the topic title and sub-title.

2 years under EU law in a minimum for electronics - but obviously more expensive items should last longer.

I think you'd have a hard time making a case for a £120 360 (the cost of an Arcade) being something which should last more than 3 years tho - £120 isn't a lot of money in electronics terms - hell you can spent more on a toaster :)

They could highlight that a GAME costs £40 and so £40/year is pretty cheap for the device to play it on!?

eh.. put a deposit on a new 360s at the weekend with them saying i'd get £99 for my elite 120gb.. now it appears they have changed the prices

http://www.game.co.uk/lowdown.aspx?lid=134...opnav-_-tradein

grrrr... or was I mistaken? I'm sure the guy at GAME said I'd get £99

>> Seriously thinking of cancelling my preorder and getting my wonga back :P

EDIT: Just phoned headoffice and this new price will be from today onwards (because apparently the didn't realise there would be massive amounts of preorders) so because I preordered last weekend I'll still get £99 for my elite. Good :)

Pre-ordered mine today at GS.

Think i'll hang on to my Halo 360 though rather than trade it.

Do I need a transfer cable to transfer the data from on HD to the other? How much do they cost? Will a memory card do the job too?

Bunch of fucking bellends. How could they not see this?! Every fucking time someone releases a smaller/different coloured console the same thing happens!
