How did it go? THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME

No issues whatsoever for any saves or content that I had, they have it sorted.

In other news, one of my mates had a RRoD a couple of weeks before the release of the new one. I jokingly made a comment that perhaps MS were systematically shutting them down so we all have to buy new ones. About a week later, sure enough my Xbox dies in the same manner.

Mine has aswell, 2 days ago......

My condolences. At least it's a good excuse to buy a new one.

The new console is a really nice little machine (although, not really that much smaller than the old one). The only issue I've had is that the eject button is in an awkward/exposed spot slightly on the top curve of the machine. Because it's so sensitive, I'm constantly accidentally setting it off while reaching around the console. The beep it makes when it goes off is strangely satisfying though. More my fault than the machine's. Maybe I'm old school, but I think I prefer buttons that you actually have to press, not just breathe on.

(Apologies if this has already been mentioned but I couldn't see anything after a quick scan)

Does the slim include the kit required to transfer all the data from your old HDD to the new one? I'm currently using an elite 120GB.

Can you use the same gamertag on two consoles if they're different regions?

I have an NTSC 360 and I'd quite like a PAL machine so I can snap up any bargains. What will it mean for stuff like Xbox Live (which I've never used yet) or purchases?

You can also get the cables for about £6 on ebay, but some caution is needed as I don't think all of them are genuine. I was going to get one of those then trade it in afterwards, should get most of the cost back for it.

Buying a 360, after not having one for years, and evaluating the noise issue...

I'm a bit puzzled about which model to go for. A new Elite can be picked up for much less than the Slim. But, if the Slim is that much quieter, I'd rather pay the extra. BUT... I have read conflicting things about how much quieter it is - 51db versus 54db when playing a game doesn't seem much quieter to me, but other reports say the difference is significant. And given that I'll install the games onto the hard drive anyway, how much difference is this really going to make?

Any opinions on all this?

db is a logarithmic scale. 3db less means it should sound about half as loud.

Depends really, Im trading in my Elite for the new one at HMV so its going to cost £90 but if I bought a wireless adapter (which I currently need) that would be £50 alone, plus the hard drive is 2x bigger than the current one as well as the noise factor, so for me its worth it. If youre not fussed about the wireless adapter and bigger hdd then the older model should be fine, it still plays all the same games and theres no difference in performance.

Know a couple of guys over the pond whose machines have already gone tits up.

I'll do some digging online... if there is (yet another) unreliability problem, it'll be all over the net.

Ah, that's good news then.

Don't need wireless (won't use it; my router is right next to my TV, so I'll use an Ethernet cable anyway); don't think I need the extra HD space - I highly doubt I'll ever want more than 3 or 4 games permanently installed and when I had a 360 (original Premium) I didn't even begin to fill the space with saves and DLC. Hell, I only ever once ran out of space on my Wii.

But the noise issue is important to me - I'm very sensitive to background noise (the blower in my car really bothers me above level 1!), so I'll probably pay the extra dosh to get the "silent" model... unless there's a new reliability time-bomb.
